Comparative Essay—Brave New World and Pride and Prejudice
In both Brave New World and Pride and Prejudice, the authors carefully detail the societies in which their characters live: rules, customs, acceptable behaviors, punishments. Choose one aspect of the two societies to compare and contrast in an essay of 3-4 pages (700-1100 words). Your essay must contain at least one quotation, properly "sandwiched," from each book.
Step 1: Brainstorm at least 5 possible topics. Be creative in thinking of differences and similarities between the two societies.
Step 2: Choose your topic and begin looking for examples and quotations from the two books that relate to the topic. Take notes with at least 4 examples from each book.
Step 3: Develop a specific thesis statement and outline for your essay. Your outline should clearly show which details you intend to discuss in which paragraph.
Vague thesis: People play games in both Pride and Prejudice and Brave New World.
Specific thesis: In both books, games and their uses reflect societal values; in Pride and Prejudice, the card games bring men and women together for supervised flirtation, while in Brave New World games keep the masses happy and encourage consumerism.
Step 4: Write a draft. It should be as complete as possible and contain at least one quotation from each novel. Look at your thesis again to make sure it fits your essay and is as specific as possible.
Step 5: Peer review. This step will be done in class.
Step 6: Revise the essay. Make sure you include two quotations and that it is the required length. Double-check that each paragraph centers on one main idea, which is expressed in a topic sentence. Add any needed transitions between paragraphs. Staple your work in the following order: rubric (on the reverse of this page), final draft, rough draft, prewriting, peer review sheet. Your essay should be ready to hand in at the beginning of class.
