All & Everything, First Series Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson: An Objectively Impartial Criticism of the Life of Man

'All written according to entirely new principles of logical reasoning and strictly directed towards the solution of the following three cardinal problems:'

'To destroy, mercilessly, without any compromises whatsoever, in the mentation and feelings of the reader, the beliefs and views, by centuries rooted in him, about everything existing in the world.'

Gurdjieff's magnum opus, an esoteric jewel.

This edition---the first single-volume paperback to appear in English---restores the original, authoritative translation supervised by Gurdjieff himself and the brilliant English editor A. R. Orage.

A. R. Orage: 'It is really an objective work of art, of literature of the highest kind; it is in the category of scripture. A must-read for all serious students.'

This richly complex book, one of the most challenging and rewarding works of twentieth-century literature, is considered Gurdjieff's masterpiece.

This book beautifully brings to life the visions of humanity for which Gurdjieff has become esteemed. Beelzebub, a man of worldly (and other-worldly) wisdom, shares with his grandson the anecdotes, personal philosophies, and lessons learned from his own life. The reader is given a detailed discussion of all matters physical, natural, and spiritual, from the creation of the cosmos to man's teleological purpose in the universe.

Gurdjieff, in his writings, intended to "awaken" people to their own inner possibilities and potential. Beelzebub's Tales To His Grandson, the three books that constitute the first series in Gurdjieff's trilogy All and Everything, distills the essence of his ideas.

All & Everything, Second Series Meetings With Remarkable Men

'To acquaint the reader with the material required for a new creation and to prove the soundness and good quality of it.'

Striking portraits of the inspiring individuals Gurdjieff met while journeying to remote parts of Asia and the Near East in search of hidden knowledge. This autobiographical account has become a classic since its publication in 1963.

Gurdjieff's autobiographical account of his youth and early travels has become something of a legend since it was first published in 1963. A compulsive 'read' in the tradition of adventure narratives, but suffused with Gurdjieff's unique perspective on life, it is organized around portraits of remarkable men and women who aided Gurdjieff's search for hidden knowledge or accompanied him on his journeys in remote parts of the Near East and Central Asia.

This is a book of lives, not of doctrines, although readers will long value Gurdjieff's accounts of conversations with sages. It conveys a haunting sense of what it means to live fully---with conscience, with purpose, and with heart. Among the remarkable individuals whom the reader will come to know are Gurdjieff's father (a traditional bard), a Russian prince dedicated to the search for Truth, a Christian missionary who entered a World Brotherhood deep in Asia, and a woman who escaped white slavery to become a trusted member of Gurdjieff's group of fellow seekers. Gurdjieff's account of their attitudes in the face of external challenges and in the search to understand the mysteries of life is the real substance of this classic work.

All & Everything, Third Series Life is Real, Only Then, When "I am"

Trained in Kars as both a priest and a physician, Gurdjieff travelled for 20 years in the remotest areas of Central Asia and the Middle East, a crucial time in the moulding of his thought. This volume is mainly autobiographical, and includes a series of talks that he gave to his pupils.

Views from the Real World: Early Talks in Moscow, Essentuki, Tiflis, Berlin, London, Paris, New York and Chicago as Recollected by His Pupils

First published in 1975, this book has established itself as an authentic source for those interested in Gurdjieff's ideas and his approach to practical 'work on oneself'.

Great changes have taken place since the death of George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff more than forty years ago, yet much of the mystery that surrounded him in his lifetime remains. This book staisfies the demand to 'hear' his actual voice and direct instruction in the form of conversations between Gurdjieff and his pupils.

That any record of these lectures exists at all is due to a few pupils who, with astonishing powers of memory and in most cases entirely without Gurdjieff's knowledge, managed to write down what they had heard afterward, whether during the tense and difficult times of their escape from revolutionary Russia, or at the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man near Paris, or during visits to American pupils in New York and elsewhere.

To lectures from the years 1917--1933 has been added the account of a conversation with Gurdjieff known as 'Glimpses of Truth', written by a Moscow pupil in 1914 and mentioned by P. D. Ouspensky in In Search of the Miraculous. Gurdjieff's aphorisms, formerly inscribed a ove the walls of the Study House at the Institute, conclude the volume.

Skeptics might regard Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff as a dilettante: interested in spirituality and the arts but only as they regarded his own following. But the piano works he composed with Thomas de Hartmann in the mid-1920s reveal tremendous depth. Born in the Caucasus and travelling into Asia throughout his life, Gurdjieff absorbed enough Asian musical and dance traditions to give these 49 piano miniatures---the sibling of another two-CD set, Music of the Sayyids and the Dervishes---convincing depth. De Hartmann, who departed from Gurdjieff's circle in 1929---two years after these works were formulated---likely added the low-end harmonics and carefully dusky textures. But Gurdjieff is likely responsible for the rhythmic moodiness of these pieces. Given that they were pedagogic, in a very loose sense, they seem elementary at times. But they're always colored by a fine concatenation of modernist elements and seemingly indigenous Asian and Mediterranean elements.

CD Gurdjieff, De Hartmann: Music for the Piano Volume 2: Music of the Sayyids and the Dervishes. Perfomers: Linda Daniel-Spitz, Charles Ketcham.

Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff was a modernist Renaissance man, able to conduct the boldly-named Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man and lead flocks of faithful spiritualists. He was also---as this two-CD set, its sibling Asian Songs and Rhythms, and two more sets attest---an articulate piano-music co-composer. Thomas de Hartmann, musically trained and familiar with various modernist arts movements, was Gurdjieff's collaborator on these 42 miniatures, adding a mix of pre-minimalist pacing and learned tonal elements to what Gurdjieff surely saw as indigenous folk sketches. Indeed, so much of this music is introspective that whole swirls of dance elements come to full fruition with a delicate grace. This is a fantastic solo piano recording.

This fascinating two-disc collection highlights the piano music written by the Greek-Armenian mystic George Gurdjieff in the 1920s. The compositions, intended to accompany spiritual dances known as "Movements," were written in collaboration with Gurdjieff's pupil Thomas de Hartmann. Largely unavailable to the general public until now, this music, like Gurdjieff's teachings, is said to express cosmic laws. In the able hands of Dutch pianist Wim van Dullemen, the music for the Movements has an ethereal feel. Alternately tender, woeful and lithe, these works will be of interest to Gurdjieff's many followers, but they should also appeal to anyone who just enjoys some low-key, relaxing piano music.

VHS Meetings with Remarkable Men

Peter Brook, director. Loosely based on the book of the same name, this is the story of Gurdjieff's search through the Middle East and Central Asia for hidden knowledge and answers to questions on the meaning of life. Made on location in the forbidding, rarely photographed mountains and deserts of Afghanistan, widely acclaimed for its unique visual beauty. Contains only publicly available footage of Movements and Sacred Dances. This film tells the story of the early life of G. I. Gurdjieff, during which he fervently searches for a source of knowledge that will help him begin to understand the meaning of human existence. The sacred dances seen near the end of the film are actual examples of 'movement exercises' performed by pupils of Gurdjieff as an aid to self-study, and they are seen performed not by actors or professional dancers, but by highly practiced pupils themselves.

In Search of the Miraculous: Fragments of an Unknown Teaching

The record of the author's intimate asociation with the mystic Gurdjieff, and his search for a system of universal knowledge. An astonishing record of the author's search for the meaning of human existence and of his eight years' work as the pupil of G. I. Gurdijeff, one of this century's most profound and influential spiritual teachers.

A blurb on the back cover of this book reads: 'This Book will change your life.' Most cynics find such statements truly revolting. Those brave enough to take the challenge will find an introduction to a teaching, called The Work, which has been handed down from generations. A pupil of G. I. Gurdjieff, P. D. Ouspensky was responsible for bring much of his work to the English speaking world. Certainly the most engaging of the text written by the Russian mathametician and philosopher, this book belongs in every transcendentalist's library.

Ouspensky met Gurdjieff in Moscow in 1915. Published with Gurdjieff's approval after Ouspensky's death, this book is the precise, clear result of Ouspensky's long work in putting together in an honest and impersonal form those 'Fragments of an Unknown Teaching' which he received from Gurdjieff. A primary source for students of the work ideas.

This book was published two years after Ouspensky's death (1948) in England. Ouspensky's search for truth brought him in 1915 to his meeting in Moscow with George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff who revealed to him a system of knowledge which Ouspensky recognised as a vital need for mankind at the present time. This record of Ouspensky's eight years of work as Gurdjieff's pupil is to be compared with Plato's representation of the life and teaching of Socrates. Written with direct simplicity this book cannot fail to convey the impression that not only did he discover a real knowledge about Man and the Universe, but that a practical teaching for the conduct of life is even now in existence. These are no theories of philosophy or psychology, but a complete understanding of the problems of life and the most direct instructions for the betterment of man's existence. Ouspensky describes the conversations between Gurdjieff and his pupils with an exactness which conveys a vivid picture of two of the most extraordinary men of our generation and dramatically relates the story of the preservation of this teaching by Gurdjieff and his small circle through the period when Tsarist Russia was destroyed.

The Fourth Way:A Record of Talks and Answers to Questions Based on theTeaching of G. I. Gurdjieff

Verbatim records of his oral teaching from 1921 to 1946 provide a comprehensive statement of the Work ideas as taught by P. D. Ouspensky; it gives a lucid explanation of the practical side of G. I. Gurdjieff's teachings.

The Fourth Way is the most comprehensive statement thus far published of the ideas taught by the late P. D. Ouspensky. Consisting of verbatim records of his oral teaching from 1921 to 1946, it gives a lucid explanation of the practical side of G. I. Gurdieff's teachings, which Gurdjieff presented in the form of raw materials, Ouspensky's specific task having been to put them together as a systematic whole. Just as Tertium Organum deals with a new mode of thinking, so The Fourth Way is concerned with a new way of living. It shows a way of inner development to be followed under the ordinary conditions of life---as distinct from the three traditional ways that call for retirement from the world: those of the fakir, the monk, and the yogi.

The Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution

This book presents the definitive edition of Ouspensky's famous first series of five psychological lectures which preceded his second series of five cosmological lectures known as The Cosmology of Man's Possible Evolution. Together they form a complete whole view of man in the world. These lectures reproduce Ouspensky's own manuscripts and are in exactly the form he introduced these ideas between 1934-1940.

Studies man in view of what he may become. Describes how man must work simultaneously on his knowledge and his being to find inner unity. These lectures were intended by Ouspensky as introductory material for people interested in the work in England. This material is still unmatched as a brief statement of the work's psychological ideas.

Designed to be read aloud at weekly meetings of small groups of people interested in the work, they are almost a basic primer of Gurdjieff's psychological ideas on consciousness and spiritual development. They were constantly revised as new groups came into existence and took their final form only after Ouspensky moved from London to New York, where he continued to teach from 1941 to 1947. The psychology Ouspensky sets forth in these introductory lectures has existed in one form or another for thousand of years and, unlike modern psychology, studies man from the point of view of what he may become. Once a man realizes how little control he has over his reactions to external circumstances and internal stimuli, he may wish to find a way to become free of this mechanical way of living. Ouspensky describes how a man must work simultaneously on his knowledge and his being to find inner unity and why although his developments depends on his own efforts, this is very difficult to achieve without guidance from a school.

A New Model of the Universe: Principles of the Psychological Method in Its Application to Problems of Science, Religion, and Art

This book is of encyclopaedic character and covers a wide range of subjects. It includes the idea of Esotericism; the problem of Superman; the Symbolism of the Tarot and systems of Yoga; the Fourth Dimension; the examination of the recent ideas of New Physics in the light of the author's system; Relativity; problems of Space and Time; the author's Model of the Universe; three dimensional Time; the Fifth and Sixth Dimensions. In connection with the latest psychological theories, a study of dreams and a sketch on hypnotism and suggestion are included; while an important section is devoted to Experimental Mysticism, describing specially induced higher states of consciousness, which establish the illusionary character of the phenomena of mediumship, so-called clairvoyance, trance states, and communication with the dead. There follows the author's impressions of the Sphinx, the Pyramids, the Taj Mahal. His views on the Gothic cathedrals and their builders are highly significant. Another section deals with the idea of recurrence of Time, an idea expounded by Pythagoras and Buddha, and here connected with mathematical explanantions. The last chapter considers the sex problem from an entirely new standpoint, namely, sex in relation to the evolution of Man towards Superman.

Talks with a Devil

Ouspensky's novel exploring themes of human foibles. Introduced and edited by J. G. Bennett. Two stories, 'The Inventor'---an allegory of man faced with the consequences of science and technology set in the US at the turn of the century---and 'The Benevolent Devil', which takes place in Ceylon, where an English civil servant prepares to do battle for his soul. They were written just before Ouspensky met Gurdjieff and just after he had returned from the East, "in search of the miraculous." They examine the whole question of conscious evil and the view that humanity's chief error is believing that the material world is the only reality.

Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky (6 Volumes)

Maurice Nicoll studied with Gurdjieff and Ouspensky. From 1931 to his death in 1953, he organised, at Ouspensky's request, a programme of work devoted to passing on the ideas he had received. Reissued in hard cover, these five commentaries are taken from the weekly written lectures and talks Nicoll gave to his students in England; the sixth volume is an index. They are concerned with directly applying certain deep ideas to daily life.

Dr. Maurice Nicoll, one of the early believers in psychological medicine was a well-known Harley Street specialist. He was the son of Sir William Robertson Nicoll, the literary critic and editor. He studied at Cambridge---where he took a first in science---at St.Bartholomew's Hospital, and in Vienna, Berlin, and Zurich. After his Army Medical Service in the 1914 War in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia, he became a medical Officer at the Empire Hospital for injuries to the brain and spinal cord, and, owing to the fact that he was a pupil of Dr. Jung he brought in many new ideas in regard to the psychological treatment of shell shock, which had been taken as a purely physical disturbance. In 1921 he met Ouspensky and in 1922 he went to the Institute at Fontainebleau to study directly under Ouspensky's teacher Gurdjieff. He afterwards resumed his practise in London and studied under Ouspensky until 1931 when he was given permission to teach. This he did in weekly talks until his death in 1953. The records of these talks were published as the famous 'Commentaries', often referred to as being an invaluable source for studying central 'work-ideas' and their practical application in daily life.

The Psychological Commentaries were written from Dr. Nicoll's own understanding of the teaching in its practical application to himself and to the members of his groups. They were begun during the years of World War II and continued afterwards, taking the form of weekly papers to members of the groups who were scattered over the world. In these papers the fundamental ideas of the System of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky are expounded with clarity so that help is given to the reader towards understanding the efforts required to reach that individual level of development indicated as the goal of all the Great Religions---attainable only by practical work on oneself.

A companion to The New Man, examines, in relation to the Gospels, the idea that real religion pertains to another man, latent but as yet unborn within us. The Theory of Celestial Influence: Man, the Universe, and Cosmic Mystery

An exploration of the universe and man's place in it. Rodney Collin examines 20th-century scientific discoveries and traditional esoteric teachings and concludes that the driving force behind everything is neither procreation nor survival, but expansion of awareness. Collin sets out to reconcile the considerable contradictions of the rational and imaginative minds and of the ways we see the external world versus our inner selves. Collin studied with Ouspensky. Of interest to seekers of truth.

The Theory of Conscious Harmony

Selections from Rodney Collin's letters regarding the Work. The book has been out of print in the USA since 1988. It contains an enlightening compilation from Rodney Collin's letters to people all over the world about the pursuit of a spiritual path within everyday life. Collin was a student of P. D. Ouspensky and was with him from 1936 until Ouspensky's death in October of 1947. The biographical note in the new edition tells that the experiences Collin went through at the time of Ouspensky's death "profoundly affected his whole being." Collin gained a perception of what and where his work was to be. For a period he remained in London and began writing The Theory of Celestial Influence. In June of 1948 he went to New York, enroute to Mexico---the place where he felt he was to begin his work. By 1949 he had moved to the outskirts of Mexico City and began translations of Mr. Ouspensky's books into Spanish.

In this book, Collin challenges the reader to penetrate one's inner world by working to achieve unity and harmony, with the ultimate aim of escaping time. Collin writes, "In all experiments and efforts and dissapointments, we must never forget the idea of self-remembering. No matter whether one is scientifically or mystically inclined, or whether one finds oneself mired in one's old life or in the middle of quite new experiences, this provides one's compass. This will show the direction in which to go and prevent one from ever becoming lost."

This book was compiled and edited by his wife, Janet Collin, following Collin's sudden death in May, 1956. He had climbed 98 steps up a church tower and suffered a heart attack, hit his head on the tower and fell to his death in the town square in Cuzco, Peru while visiting work groups he had helped establish in South America. Luckily, Collin had kept copies of his letters over the years. This work draws on key points related to the work in answer to people's queries and notes to him from 1944 to 1956. Janet Collin compiled and edited these to create 35 different selections of major work ideas. Of particular note is the quality of positiveness that marks his writing throughout. 'There is so much to do in preparation for the future, so many different fields in which harmony must come, and all by means of ordinary everyday men like ourselves... In individual men, harmony among fuctions; harmony between body, soul, and spirit; harmony among its different members, harmony between its leader and its origin; in the great esoteric impulse launched through Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, harmony among all lines and groups; harmony between them, their founders, and God; in the world, harmony among all branches of knowledge, all peoples, all esoteric lines.'

The Work Life: Based on the Teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff, P. D. Ouspensky and Maurice Nicoll

The Work is about applying what you know to your daily activities, rather than simply theorizing about abstract ideas of life. The author lived the work life and studied with Maurice Nicoll for almost two decades, beginning to teach a group at his request in 1955. The group had residential meetings at Dorton House, and it was there that people had a chance to experiment with what they learned. A level of community developed: group projects included painting a mural, building a summer house, and making a glass mosaic of the zodiac---all activities designed to bring out various talents in the group. It was a great opportunity for learning. This record of the Work has been published to help modern students understand how the teachings of Gurdjieff, Nicoll, and Ouspensky can be actualized. Here she shares actual work sessions with students so that modern readers can experience this kind of teaching firsthand.

Basic Self-Knowledge

In these commentaries, and in the system of esoteric development expounded by Gurdjieff, are the keys to the true meaning and purpose of existence. To understand them, is to gain freedom from the self-imprisonment from which we all suffer. This book explores the essentials of this self-knowledge and the basic theosophical pattern underlying Nicoll's, Gurdjieff's, and Krishnamurti's teachings.

Consciousness begins with ourselves. When we have basic self-knowledge, we can then break out of the molds of our everyday lives and conditions and start to make contact with a deeper and far more satisfying level of life and understanding. This basic introduction to self-knowledge is based on the system of esoteric development introduced to the West by Gurdjieff, with references to the writings of Krishnamurti. The only way of affecting change in our lives is to start from within. Basic self-knowledge is the key to becoming more responsible for the quality of our lives, our future, and ultimately our inner peace and happiness.

The Gurdjieff Work

A guide to the extraordinary life and work of the famous and controversial forerunner of the New Age. An excellent little introduction to the Work by someone born into it. Professor Speeth is among that group of authors attempting to create a bridge between the psychological and spiritual worlds in hopes of meeting the needs of contemporary seekers.

Kathleen Riordan Speeth was born into the Gurdjieff work. Early contact with Gurdjieff himself and with his close disciples oriented her life toward answering the perennial questions that were the focus of Gurdjieff's quest: Who am I? Why am I here? How can I be all that is possible for me? Seeking answers led her to a doctorate in Skinnerian behavioristics psychology, to practical educational applications of psychological principles, to training in Gestalt and other humanistic psychotherapies, and to studies in the Hindu, Buddhist, and Sufi traditions. Dr. Speeth is presently conducting therapeutic and meditations groups at SAT Institute in Berkeley and is a member of the faculty of Nyingma Institute and the California Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.

Gurdjieff: Making a New World

An in-depth biography that explores the role Gurdjieff played in bringing ancient wisdom to the West. Unique and controversial insights into Gurdjieff's ideas, life, teaching method, search, and mission. Bennett, with the world view of an esoteric historian, writes from personal contact and the ability to speak to Gurdjieff in Armenian.

Bennett was in contact with Gurdjeff and Ouspensky for more than thirty years. He was the author of more than twenty books, many of which reflect his understanding of Gurdjeff's teachings and their significance for the modern world. The first part of this biographical study traces the 'masters of wisdom' in Central Asia and explores Gurdjieff's personal search and mission. Later chapters deal with Gurdjieff's writings, teaching style and central concepts.

The Intelligent Enneagram

At last, an enneagram book that explains the full potential of this mysterious nine-pointed symbol, with applications reaching far beyond personality typology. The enneagram, an ancient diagram first introduced to the West and popularized by Gurdjieff, represents the evolution of any process and is thus a remarkable tool for analyzing and understanding many different areas of endeavor. Like the I Ching hexagrams or the kabbalistic Tree of Life, the enneagram is an ingenious device providing access to a higher order of information and can lead us to new and creative ways of thinking and problem-solving. Drawing on the teachings of John Bennett, a major interpreter of the Gurdjieff Work, Blake shows how using the enneagram can enhance our powers of intuition, our capacity to see situations holistically, and our ability to find connections between different regions of knowledge and experience. After discussing in detail the fundamental ideas woven into the symbol, Blake applies the insights of the enneagram to a series of topics ranging from the solar system to sex, from science fiction movies to the Lord's Prayer. Blake trained in physics and the philosophy of science, and studied with J. G. Bennett.

All My Yesterdays: An Autobiography

From Publisher's Weekly

Retired and living on the island of Corfu, 95-year-old British author Lewis here offers a readable but occasionally garrulous and rambling overview of his adventurous life. An aviator in WW I, he flew dangerous missions, surviving the Battle of the Somme and an encounter with the famed 'Red Baron', described more fully in his earlier memoir, Sagittarius Rising. After the war, he and others founded the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), which led to a professional relationship with George Bernard Shaw. Lewis's checkered career as a film director, novelist (Challenge to the Night) and Wing Commander during WW II provided him with the opportunity to live in many places, including Hollywood, Tahiti, Italy and Africa. A devotee of the late Greco-Armenian mystic Gurdjieff, Lewis devotes the latter portion of his memoir to a description of Gurdjieff's philosophy and its impact on his life.

From Library Journal

A fighter pilot in World War I, film director, world traveler, author, pioneer in programming for the 1920s BBC, winner of an Oscar for a screenplay adaptation of his friend George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion , training instructor and commander of a wing of transport aircraft in Greece during World War II---all this would have been the sum of an exceptional life. But Lewis, at age 95, continues to pursue the enthusiasm of his later years, the convoluted writings of philosopher G. I. Gurdjieff. A fourth of Lewis's narrative is taken up with these discoveries and their outcomes, including having to sell his Italian retreat on the Lago Maggiore, which he had for years labored to perfect, to aid a small community of followers. This is a mostly engrossing autobiography for general readers.

Born in 1898, the author was actively retired and lived in Corfu until his death in 1997.

A Wish to Be: A Voyage of Discovery

Touched personally by Gurdjieff and by his ideas, Lewis, author of Sagittarius Rising, here draws on a lifetime's experience challenging us to discover our true nature. Originally broadcast as a series of 'Reflections' for the BBC World Service, this book is a journey into self-discovery, the nature of human being, and the potential we all have to develop an inner life. Drawing on a lifetime's experience of the vagaries of human nature and the ways of the world, the author challenges us all to wake up, now, and discover who we really are. Born in 1898, the author was actively retired and lived in Corfu until his death in 1997.

Zen and the Psychology of Transformation: The Supreme Doctrine

A noted psychiatrist and pupil of Gurdjieff, Dr. Benoit applies the essence of Oriental wisdom to the development of self-knowledge, advocating not conversion but integration of Eastern perspectives into a Western context. An important book about which Huxley says, 'This is a book that should be read by everyone who aspires to know who he or she is and what can be done to acquire such self-knowledge.'

From The Publisher:

Man cannot live fully until he has considered the great questions of life. It is for this reason that we turn to Western psychology and metaphysics for help in solving our problems.

The approach of psychology and psychotherapy is based on 'statistical normality', or the behavior of the greatest number. In an effort to conform, we focus on our problems rather than our possibilities, emulating a norm that falls drastically short of our full capacity for development.

Oriental thought, and Zen thought in particular, seeks to activate the true potential of men and women---to transform our lives, and thereby enable us to shed our problems and suffering.

The Teachers of Gurdjieff

The tale he tells is tantalizing and absorbing. Rafael Lefort recounts in this book, published more than a dozen years after Gurdjieff's death, his own journey to find the source of Gurdjieff's teaching. In so doing, he closes the circle of mystery surrounding the teachings of George Gurdjieff, completing the story that was begun in Gurdjieff's own book, Meetings with Remarkable Men. In that work, it was clear that Gurdjieff's knowledge was gained from a series of Sufi sages throughout the Middle East, in a form of spiritual apprenticeship. Mr. Lefort discovers that this relationship continued during most of Gurdjieff's teaching career, and terminated when the teaching function was deemed to have reached its end. Lefort meets the men who taught Gurdjieff and who maintained contact with his teachings after his arrival in the West, and in the process completes his own journeyman's apprenticeship. The tale he tells is tantalizing as it is absorbing, as he travels from Turkey and Iraq through Jerusalem (where he discovers intriguing traditions about the teachings of Jesus) to Afghanistan. Those who have tried to build a system out of Gurdjieff's teaching, Lefort asserts, have got it all wrong. Gurdjieff was offering something far more valuable than any system: contact with an active, living tradition, which continues to this day. Lefort claims to find in the Persian Sufi Hakim Sanai's Walled Garden of Truth the essence of Gurdjieff's entire teaching, an assertion which Gurdjieff students will likely want to check for themselves.

In the spiritual language of the 20th century few names raise such varied reactions as that of Gurdjieff. Much of what is considered New Age spirituality can be attributed to him. This book is a tribute not only to the scope and power of the ideas he brought to the West, but to the special 'atmosphere' that surrounded his work with pupils. Essays about Gurdjieff, his teaching, his influence, including short essays by Jeanne De Salzmann and articles by people who knew him personally. Anyone long-studied in these ideas will recognize that this book expresses the very essence of the teaching. Mouravieff, who knew both Gurdjieff and Ouspensky before their appearance in western Europe, presents an astonishing display of brilliant and profound wisdom. On The Elephant's Knee: Gurdjieffian Typology

An interesting title by an associate of the sacred science institute, presenting a system for psychologically reading or evaluating people through observation of physiological and psychologically interactive behavior characteristics. This system is based upon principles developed by the famous mystical cosmologist, G. I. Gurdjieff, and essentially allows one to learn a quantity of information as sophisticated as an astrological reading, merely through observation of physical and behavioral characteristics. Such systems have always been used in esoteric orders to allow an added advantage of psychological insight into those with whom they dealt. Cults in Our Midst

Though the title may seem sensational, the book is a well-researched, enlightening introduction to a serious subject. Singer is a clinical psychologist and emeritus adjunct professor at the University of California at Berkeley who has interviewed several thousand former cult members and testified about cults and their "thought reform" tactics; Lalich is a professional writer and former cult member. The strength of this book is its clear explanation of the nature of cults, how they operate, the threat they pose to individuals, families, and society, and how others can help cult survivors escape and recover. Many types of cultic relationships are considered, from tiny religious or occult groups, including those using the names of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, to the "large group awareness training" programs that have infiltrated workplaces. The book makes key distinctions between New Age ideas and the cults that use these concepts and between types of persuasion, from education to propaganda to cults' manipulative "thought reform." Most Americans, the author stresses, will be vulnerable to cults at some point in their lives. Includes resource and suggested reading lists.

As the millennium approaches, cults are on the move more than ever before. The country's leading authority on cults now calls on her 50 years of experience to write this definitive book on the subject. Singer's shocking expose reveals what cults are and how they work.

The foremost expert on mind control shows that cults are more dangerous than ever before, and advises readers what they can do about their shocking infiltrations into the workplace, which comes in the guise of training programs and "new age" workshops aimed at coercion.

Demonstrating that cults are becoming more dangerous and infiltrating the workplace in the guise of training programs and workshops, an expert on mind control tells how to recognize cults and their leaders, rescue members, and begin the long recovery process.

Midwest Book Review
Most people believe that cult members are mentally unbalanced or are misfits who live in remote places, like the doomed devotees of Jim Jones and David Koresh. We take comfort in the fact that the influences of cultures are far removed from our everyday lives. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Captive Hearts, Captive Minds: Freedom and Recovery from Cults and Other Abusive Relationships

A must-read for former cult members. I wish I had found this book immediately after leaving the cult I was involved in. This book offers invaluable assitance to those who have been involved with a destructive cult, whether it be reilgious, political, or psycho-theraputic. The text also gives a breakdown of how and why cults operate as they do; how and why people get recruitted into cults; and how and why people leave cults. This book is truly a gift from the authors' heart, experiences and study. Thanks to them.

Recommended! This book will prove invaluable help for both those with loved ones in a religious cult, and those coming to terms with leaving a religious cult. The authors Tobias and Lalich treat this difficult subject with care and sensitivity. It's a shame more young people don't get a chance to read this before they get mixed up in a destructive group.

Body Mind Spirit: Exploring the Parapsychology of Spirituality

Addressing the split between practitioners of science and those of spirituality, Charles Tart presents the considerations of well-known researchers and authors such as William Roll, Ramakrishna Rao, Michael Grosso, and Jeffrey Mishlove on such subjects as God, life after death, channeling, and other dimensions. A ground-breaking work that may surprise many readers.

From the author, Charles T. Tart:

'The world's most powerful (and negative) religion is Scientism, and you, dear reader, are a member of that church at least part of the time, whether you know it or not. A lot of (useless) conflict and suffering has occurred in our lives because of that.

Scientism is what happens to essential science when there is a mental hardening of the arteries, when arrogance makes us think we know it all and automatically scoff at and dismiss anything that doesn't fit our supposedly scientific beliefs, our 'ism'. Scientism scoffs at and invalidates the entire spiritual nature of people and so causes great suffering, for when any real part of us is denied, we get psychologically sick.

High quality, essential science, specifically rigorous work in parapsychology, shows the mind can do things that the brain and body, the material part, the only part of humanity that Scientism recognizes, cannot do, and the implications of these findings (which is what 'Body Mind Spirit' is all about) open us to look at the realm of spirit without rejecting all the good aspects of science. I believe knowledge of these findings and their implications is vital for our mental and spiritual health as modern people. In essence, I am now proud to be both a tough-minded scientist AND a spiritual seeker, and this book is about why I can say that. I hope it will also help you toward a better integration of our spiritual and rational sides, which are both part of Reality.'

VHS Seven Samurai

Unanimously hailed as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of the motion picture, Seven Samurai has inspired countless films modeled after its basic premise. But Akira Kurosawa's classic 1954 action drama has never been surpassed in terms of sheer power of emotion, kinetic energy, and dynamic character development. The story is set in the 1600s, when the residents of a small Japanese village are seeking protection against repeated attacks by a band of marauding thieves. Offering mere handfuls of rice as payment, they hire seven unemployed "ronin" (masterless samurai), including a boastful swordsman (Toshiro Mifune) who is actually a farmer's son desperately seeking glory and acceptance. The samurai get acquainted with but remain distant from the villagers, knowing that their assignment may prove to be fatal. The climactic battle with the raiding thieves remains one of the most breathtaking sequences ever filmed. It's poetry in hyperactive motion and one of Kurosawa's crowning cinematic achievements. This is not a film that can be well served by any synopsis; it must be seen to be appreciated (accept nothing less than its complete 203-minute version) and belongs on the short list of any definitive home-video library.

In 16th century Japan, a defenseless village nestled in the hills is constantly besieged by hooligans. The farmers know that when the rice ripens the thugs will return, so a small group goes to town to employ a pack of hired killers. But the samurai just laugh at the paltry wages---lodgings and a daily bowl of rice---that the poor village men offer. Only Kambei, a brave elder samurai, takes up their cause. From the many poor warriors who walk the streets, he slowly puts together his team of fighters: four seasoned samurai, one eager apprentice and an alcoholic. Upon reaching the village, the samurai learn that the farmers fear them as much as they fear the enemy. But the samurai teach them courage and cooperation, and soon the farmers become warriors who can take care of themselves, while the samurai become legends.

This epic tragedy might have been attempted by a younger director, but only the Japanese master Akira Kurosawa, who made the film at age 75, could bring the requisite experience and maturity to this stunning interpretation of Shakespeare's King Lear. It's a film for the ages---one of the few genuine screen masterpieces---and arguably serves as an artistic summation of the great director's career. In this version of the Shakespeare tragedy, the king is a 16th-century warlord (Tatsuya Nakadai as Lord Hidetora) who decides to retire and divide his kingdom evenly among his three sons. When one son defiantly objects out of loyalty to his father and warns of inevitable sibling rivalry, he is banished and the kingdom is awarded to his compliant siblings. The loyal son's fears are valid: a duplicitous power struggle ensues and the aging warlord witnesses a maelstrom of horrifying death and destruction. Although the film is slow to establish its story, it's clear that Kurosawa, who planned and painstakingly designed the production for 10 years before filming began, was charting a meticulous and tightly formalized dramatic strategy. As familial tensions rise and betrayal sends Lord Hidetora into the throes of escalating madness, Ran (the title is the Japanese character for "chaos" or "rebellion") reaches a fever pitch through epic battles and a fortress assault that is simply one of the most amazing sequences on film.

Ingmar Bergman's wonderfully magic adaptation of Mozart's last opera. The fairy tale plot concerns a handsome prince whom the Queen of the Night entreats to rescue her daughter, Pamina. The girl has been abducted by the wicked sorcerer Sarastro and cannot free herself from his clutches. If Prince Tamino succeeds in his mission, he may have Pamina's hand in marriage---and one look at the princess's picture convinces him to take on the dangerous task. But when Tamino reaches Sarastro's palace he discovers that the Queen may not have told him the complete truth. Together he and Pamina must learn to recognize good from evil and prove themselves worthy of each other's love.
