The Work Life: Based on the Teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff, P. D. Ouspensky and Maurice Nicoll
The Work is about applying what you know to your daily activities, rather than simply theorizing about abstract ideas of life. The author lived the work life and studied with Maurice Nicoll for almost two decades, beginning to teach a group at his request in 1955. The group had residential meetings at Dorton House, and it was there that people had a chance to experiment with what they learned. A level of community developed: group projects included painting a mural, building a summer house, and making a glass mosaic of the zodiac---all activities designed to bring out various talents in the group. It was a great opportunity for learning. This record of the Work has been published to help modern students understand how the teachings of Gurdjieff, Nicoll, and Ouspensky can be actualized. Here she shares actual work sessions with students so that modern readers can experience this kind of teaching firsthand.

Basic Self-Knowledge
In these commentaries, and in the system of esoteric development expounded by Gurdjieff, are the keys to the true meaning and purpose of existence. To understand them, is to gain freedom from the self-imprisonment from which we all suffer. This book explores the essentials of this self-knowledge and the basic theosophical pattern underlying Nicoll's, Gurdjieff's, and Krishnamurti's teachings.
Consciousness begins with ourselves. When we have basic self-knowledge, we can then break out of the molds of our everyday lives and conditions and start to make contact with a deeper and far more satisfying level of life and understanding. This basic introduction to self-knowledge is based on the system of esoteric development introduced to the West by Gurdjieff, with references to the writings of Krishnamurti. The only way of affecting change in our lives is to start from within. Basic self-knowledge is the key to becoming more responsible for the quality of our lives, our future, and ultimately our inner peace and happiness.

The Gurdjieff Work
A guide to the extraordinary life and work of the famous and controversial forerunner of the New Age. An excellent little introduction to the Work by someone born into it. Professor Speeth is among that group of authors attempting to create a bridge between the psychological and spiritual worlds in hopes of meeting the needs of contemporary seekers.
Kathleen Riordan Speeth was born into the Gurdjieff work. Early contact with Gurdjieff himself and with his close disciples oriented her life toward answering the perennial questions that were the focus of Gurdjieff's quest: Who am I? Why am I here? How can I be all that is possible for me? Seeking answers led her to a doctorate in Skinnerian behavioristics psychology, to practical educational applications of psychological principles, to training in Gestalt and other humanistic psychotherapies, and to studies in the Hindu, Buddhist, and Sufi traditions. Dr. Speeth is presently conducting therapeutic and meditations groups at SAT Institute in Berkeley and is a member of the faculty of Nyingma Institute and the California Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.

Gurdjieff: Making a New World
An in-depth biography that explores the role Gurdjieff played in bringing ancient wisdom to the West. Unique and controversial insights into Gurdjieff's ideas, life, teaching method, search, and mission. Bennett, with the world view of an esoteric historian, writes from personal contact and the ability to speak to Gurdjieff in Armenian.
Bennett was in contact with Gurdjeff and Ouspensky for more than thirty years. He was the author of more than twenty books, many of which reflect his understanding of Gurdjeff's teachings and their significance for the modern world. The first part of this biographical study traces the 'masters of wisdom' in Central Asia and explores Gurdjieff's personal search and mission. Later chapters deal with Gurdjieff's writings, teaching style and central concepts.

|
Deeper Man
Bennett's definitive and eclectic approach to esoteric knowledge with Gurdjieff's ideas rigourously applied to the current critical condition of 20th century society. This book is essentially about freedom and how it can be achieved, about the inner world and how to reach it.

The Intelligent Enneagram
At last, an enneagram book that explains the full potential of this mysterious nine-pointed symbol, with applications reaching far beyond personality typology. The enneagram, an ancient diagram first introduced to the West and popularized by Gurdjieff, represents the evolution of any process and is thus a remarkable tool for analyzing and understanding many different areas of endeavor. Like the I Ching hexagrams or the kabbalistic Tree of Life, the enneagram is an ingenious device providing access to a higher order of information and can lead us to new and creative ways of thinking and problem-solving. Drawing on the teachings of John Bennett, a major interpreter of the Gurdjieff Work, Blake shows how using the enneagram can enhance our powers of intuition, our capacity to see situations holistically, and our ability to find connections between different regions of knowledge and experience. After discussing in detail the fundamental ideas woven into the symbol, Blake applies the insights of the enneagram to a series of topics ranging from the solar system to sex, from science fiction movies to the Lord's Prayer. Blake trained in physics and the philosophy of science, and studied with J. G. Bennett.

Exchanges Within: Questions from Everday Life Selected from Gurdjieff Group Meetings with John Pentland in California 1955--1984
A significant contribution to the small number of genuinely valuable modern works of spiritual direction and guidance. [It] concentrates on one main question: finding within ourselves what we have (this time almost irretrievably) lost: our reality, wholeness and significance as the human kind of being in the universe. Selections gathered from nearly 30 years of meetings between Pentland and students. A student of Ouspensky, Gurdjieff, and Jeanne de Salzmann, Pentland was instrumental in organizing and developing a Gurdjieff Foundation in the US. Through the intensity of his own search, Pentland radiated a help necessary for others in their own movement toward being.

All My Yesterdays: An Autobiography
From Publisher's Weekly
Retired and living on the island of Corfu, 95-year-old British author Lewis here offers a readable but occasionally garrulous and rambling overview of his adventurous life. An aviator in WW I, he flew dangerous missions, surviving the Battle of the Somme and an encounter with the famed 'Red Baron', described more fully in his earlier memoir, Sagittarius Rising. After the war, he and others founded the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), which led to a professional relationship with George Bernard Shaw. Lewis's checkered career as a film director,
novelist (Challenge to the Night) and Wing Commander during WW II provided him with the opportunity to live in many places, including Hollywood, Tahiti, Italy and Africa. A devotee of the late Greco-Armenian mystic Gurdjieff, Lewis devotes the latter portion of his memoir to a description of Gurdjieff's philosophy and its impact on his life.
From Library Journal
A fighter pilot in World War I, film director, world traveler, author, pioneer in programming for the 1920s BBC, winner of an Oscar for a screenplay adaptation of his friend George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion , training instructor and commander of a wing of transport aircraft in Greece during World War II---all this would have been the sum of an exceptional life. But Lewis, at age 95, continues to pursue the enthusiasm of his later years, the convoluted writings of philosopher G. I. Gurdjieff. A fourth of Lewis's narrative is taken up with these discoveries and their outcomes, including having to sell his Italian retreat on the Lago Maggiore, which he had for years labored to perfect, to aid a small community of followers. This is a mostly engrossing autobiography for general readers.
Born in 1898, the author was actively retired and lived in Corfu until his death in 1997.

|
A Wish to Be: A Voyage of Discovery
Touched personally by Gurdjieff and by his ideas, Lewis, author of Sagittarius Rising, here draws on a lifetime's experience challenging us to discover our true nature. Originally broadcast as a series of 'Reflections' for the BBC World Service, this book is a journey into self-discovery, the nature of human being, and the potential we all have to develop an inner life. Drawing on a lifetime's experience of the vagaries of human nature and the ways of the world, the author challenges us all to wake up, now, and discover who we really are. Born in 1898, the author was actively retired and lived in Corfu until his death in 1997.

Zen and the Psychology of Transformation: The Supreme Doctrine
A noted psychiatrist and pupil of Gurdjieff, Dr. Benoit applies the essence of Oriental wisdom to the development of self-knowledge, advocating not conversion but integration of Eastern perspectives into a Western context. An important book about which Huxley says, 'This is a book that should be read by everyone who aspires to know who he or she is and what can be done to acquire such self-knowledge.'
From The Publisher:
Man cannot live fully until he has considered the great questions of life. It is for this reason that we turn to Western psychology and metaphysics for help in solving our problems.
The approach of psychology and psychotherapy is based on 'statistical normality', or the behavior of the greatest number. In an effort to conform, we focus on our problems rather than our possibilities, emulating a norm that falls drastically short of our full capacity for development.
Oriental thought, and Zen thought in particular, seeks to activate the true potential of men and women---to transform our lives, and thereby enable us to shed our problems and suffering.

The Teachers of Gurdjieff
The tale he tells is tantalizing and absorbing. Rafael Lefort recounts in this book, published more than a dozen years after Gurdjieff's death, his own journey to find the source of Gurdjieff's teaching. In so doing, he closes the circle of mystery surrounding the teachings of George Gurdjieff, completing the story that was begun in Gurdjieff's own book, Meetings with Remarkable Men. In that work, it was clear that Gurdjieff's knowledge was gained from a series of Sufi sages throughout the Middle East, in a form of spiritual apprenticeship. Mr. Lefort discovers that this relationship continued during most of Gurdjieff's teaching career, and terminated when the teaching function was deemed to have reached its end. Lefort meets the men who taught Gurdjieff and who maintained contact with his teachings after his arrival in the West, and in the process completes his own journeyman's apprenticeship. The tale he tells is tantalizing as it is absorbing, as he travels from Turkey and Iraq through Jerusalem (where he discovers intriguing traditions about the teachings of Jesus) to Afghanistan. Those who have tried to build a system out of Gurdjieff's teaching, Lefort asserts, have got it all wrong. Gurdjieff was offering something far more valuable than any system: contact with an active, living tradition, which continues to this day. Lefort claims to find in the Persian Sufi Hakim Sanai's Walled Garden of Truth the essence of Gurdjieff's entire teaching, an assertion which Gurdjieff students will likely want to check for themselves.

Gurdjieff: Essays and Reflections on the Man and His Teachings
In the spiritual language of the 20th century few names raise such varied reactions as that of Gurdjieff. Much of what is considered New Age spirituality can be attributed to him. This book is a tribute not only to the scope and power of the ideas he brought to the West, but to the special 'atmosphere' that surrounded his work with pupils. Essays about Gurdjieff, his teaching, his influence, including short essays by Jeanne De Salzmann and articles by people who knew him personally. A wide variety of new studies and accounts by pupils of his teachings as well as by people in science, humanities, and the arts. Also contains essays on the music and movements of Gurdjieff.

This classic study devotes a chapter to the life and work of each of these individuals, such as Buddha, Jesus, Dante, Blake, Balzac and Whitman. The resulting inspired study presents a theory unique in its day, of different levels of consciousness and the evolution of the human mind.

Gnosis: Volume 1, The Exoteric Cycle: Study and Commentaries on the Esoteric Tradition of Eastern Orthodoxy
G. I. Gurdjieff often stated that the basis of his teaching was esoteric Christianity. In these books, Boris Mouravieff reveals that this Tradition is found in its complete form in Greece and Russia, transmitted by the 'Great Esoteric Brotherhood'. The author informs us that this ancient Tradition in which is found all of the Work's ideas, diagrams, cosmologies, and exercises, comes from the heart of Eastern Christianity. Anyone long-studied in these ideas will recognize that this book expresses the very essence of the teaching. Mouravieff, who knew both Gurdjieff and Ouspensky before their appearance in western Europe, presents an astonishing display of brilliant and profound wisdom. There is no denying the authoritative atmosphere which radiates from every page. These volumes will require all who seek awakening to reconsider in a new light the great legacy left us by Gurdjieff.

On The Elephant's Knee: Gurdjieffian Typology
An interesting title by an associate of the sacred science institute, presenting a system for psychologically reading or evaluating people through observation of physiological and psychologically interactive behavior characteristics. This system is based upon principles developed by the famous mystical cosmologist, G. I. Gurdjieff, and essentially allows one to learn a quantity of information as sophisticated as an astrological reading, merely through observation of physical and behavioral characteristics. Such systems have always been used in esoteric orders to allow an added advantage of psychological insight into those with whom they dealt. This knowledge is called foundation knowledge, revealing the core or foundation of all knowledge which manifests through the law of correspondences in all phenomena. A valuable work meant for application.

Cults in Our Midst
Though the title may seem sensational, the book is a well-researched, enlightening introduction to a serious subject. Singer is a clinical psychologist and emeritus adjunct professor at the University of California at Berkeley who has interviewed several thousand former cult members and testified about cults and their "thought reform" tactics; Lalich is a professional writer and former cult member. The strength of this book is its clear explanation of the nature of cults, how they operate, the threat they pose to individuals, families, and society, and how others can help cult survivors escape and recover. Many types of cultic relationships are considered, from tiny religious or occult groups, including those using the names of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, to the "large group awareness training" programs that have infiltrated workplaces. The book makes key distinctions between New Age ideas and the cults that use these concepts and between types of persuasion, from education to propaganda to cults' manipulative "thought reform." Most Americans, the author stresses, will be vulnerable to cults at some point in their lives. Includes resource and suggested reading lists.
As the millennium approaches, cults are on the move more than ever before. The country's leading authority on cults now calls on her 50 years of experience to write this definitive book on the subject. Singer's shocking expose reveals what
cults are and how they work.
The foremost expert on mind control shows that cults are more dangerous than ever before, and advises readers what they can do about their shocking infiltrations into the workplace, which comes in the guise of training programs and "new age" workshops aimed at coercion.
Demonstrating that cults are becoming more dangerous and infiltrating the workplace in the guise of training programs and workshops, an expert on mind control tells how to recognize cults and their leaders, rescue members, and begin the long recovery process.
Midwest Book Review
Most people believe that cult members are mentally unbalanced or are misfits who live in remote places, like the doomed devotees of Jim Jones and David Koresh. We take comfort in the fact that the influences of cultures are far removed from our everyday lives. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Captive Hearts, Captive Minds: Freedom and Recovery from Cults and Other Abusive Relationships
A must-read for former cult members. I wish I had found this book immediately after leaving the cult I was involved in. This book offers invaluable assitance to those who have been involved with a destructive cult, whether it be reilgious, political, or psycho-theraputic. The text gives former members indications of what to expect in recovery as well as practical assistance to cope with their recovery. The text also gives a breakdown of how and why cults operate as they do; how and why people get recruitted into cults; and how and why people leave cults. This book is truly a gift from the authors' heart, experiences and study. Thanks to them.
Recommended! This book will prove invaluable help for both those with loved ones in a religious cult, and those coming to terms with leaving a religious cult. The authors Tobias and Lalich treat this difficult subject with care and sensitivity. It's a shame more young people don't get a chance to read this before they get mixed up in a destructive group.
Written by Madeleine Tobias, a former member of a new age cult and a psychotherapist, and Janja Lalich, a former member of a political cult and an author/editor, this book is an informative and useful introduction to the cult phenomenon. It provides hands-on help for former members, their families, and professionals. It includes personal stories of healing and recovery, an analysis of cult leaders, an extensive list of resources, and sections on family issues.

Body Mind Spirit: Exploring the Parapsychology of Spirituality
Addressing the split between practitioners of science and those of spirituality, Charles Tart presents the considerations of well-known researchers and authors such as William Roll, Ramakrishna Rao, Michael Grosso, and Jeffrey Mishlove on such subjects as God, life after death, channeling, and other dimensions. A ground-breaking work that may surprise many readers.
From the author, Charles T. Tart:
'The world's most powerful (and negative) religion is Scientism, and you, dear reader, are a member of that church at least part of the time, whether you know it or not. A lot of (useless) conflict and suffering has occurred in our lives because of that.
Scientism is what happens to essential science when there is a mental hardening of the arteries, when arrogance makes us think we know it all and automatically scoff at and dismiss anything that doesn't fit our supposedly scientific beliefs, our 'ism'. Scientism scoffs at and invalidates the entire spiritual nature of people and so causes great suffering, for when any real part of us is denied, we get psychologically sick.
High quality, essential science, specifically rigorous work in parapsychology, shows the mind can do things that the brain and body, the material part, the only part of humanity that Scientism recognizes, cannot do, and the implications of these findings (which is what 'Body Mind Spirit' is all about) open us to look at the realm of spirit without rejecting all the good aspects of science. I believe knowledge of these findings and their implications is vital for our mental and spiritual health as modern people. In essence, I am now proud to be both a tough-minded scientist AND a spiritual seeker, and this book is about why I can say that. I hope it will also help you toward a better integration of our spiritual and rational sides, which are both part of Reality.'

VHS Seven Samurai
Unanimously hailed as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of the motion picture, Seven Samurai has inspired countless films modeled after its basic premise. But Akira Kurosawa's classic 1954 action drama has never been surpassed in terms of sheer power of emotion, kinetic energy, and dynamic character development. The story is set in the 1600s, when the residents of a small Japanese village are seeking protection against repeated attacks by a band of marauding thieves. Offering mere handfuls of rice as payment, they hire seven unemployed "ronin" (masterless samurai), including a boastful swordsman (Toshiro Mifune) who is actually a farmer's son desperately seeking glory and acceptance. The samurai get acquainted with but remain distant from the villagers, knowing that their assignment may prove to be fatal. The climactic battle with the raiding thieves remains one of the most breathtaking sequences ever filmed. It's poetry in hyperactive motion and one of Kurosawa's crowning cinematic achievements. This is not a film that can be well served by any synopsis; it must be seen to be appreciated (accept nothing less than its complete 203-minute version) and belongs on the short list of any definitive home-video library.
In 16th century Japan, a defenseless village nestled in the hills is constantly besieged by hooligans. The farmers know that when the rice ripens the thugs will return, so a small group goes to town to employ a pack of hired killers. But the samurai just laugh at the paltry wages---lodgings and a daily bowl of rice---that the poor village men offer. Only Kambei, a brave elder samurai, takes up their cause. From the many poor warriors who walk the streets, he slowly puts together his team of fighters: four seasoned samurai, one eager apprentice and an alcoholic. Upon reaching the village, the samurai learn that the farmers fear them as much as they fear the enemy. But the samurai teach them courage and cooperation, and soon the farmers become warriors who can take care of themselves, while the samurai become legends.

This epic tragedy might have been attempted by a younger director, but only the Japanese master Akira Kurosawa, who made the film at age 75, could bring the requisite experience and maturity to this stunning interpretation of Shakespeare's King Lear. It's a film for the ages---one of the few genuine screen masterpieces---and arguably serves as an artistic summation of the great director's career. In this version of the Shakespeare tragedy, the king is a 16th-century warlord (Tatsuya Nakadai as Lord Hidetora) who decides to retire and divide his kingdom evenly among his three sons. When one son defiantly objects out of loyalty to his father and warns of inevitable sibling rivalry, he is banished and the kingdom is awarded to his compliant siblings. The loyal son's fears are valid: a duplicitous power struggle ensues and the aging warlord witnesses a maelstrom of horrifying death and destruction. Although the film is slow to establish its story, it's clear that Kurosawa, who planned and painstakingly designed the production for 10 years before filming began, was charting a meticulous and tightly formalized dramatic strategy. As familial tensions rise and betrayal sends Lord Hidetora into the throes of escalating madness, Ran (the title is the Japanese character for "chaos" or "rebellion") reaches a fever pitch through epic battles and a fortress assault that is simply one of the most amazing sequences on film.
