The Greenon High School wrestling team had a very successful weekend at the District Meet in Wilmington, Ohio as the Four Wrestlers who had qualified for the District Meet, Sean Christensen, J.R. Mock, Joe Hall and Chris Wolf, went a combined 11-6 against the top wrestlers from the Southwestern District High Schools. Greenon had two individual wrestlers qualify for the State Wrestling Meet in Columbus, Ohio next week as Sean Christensen finished in 2nd Place in the 140 lb weight class and J.R. Mock took 3rd place in the 152 lb weight class. The top 4 wrestlers from each weight division advance to the State Meet. This is the first time in over 10 years that Greenon has sent a wrestler to the State Tournament and it’s believed to be the first time ever that two wrestlers have qualified in the same year.

Sean Christensen took the preferred route to the State Meet as he stayed undefeated until the Championship Match when he lost to Graham’s Bryce Markley by a score of 12-6. Sean did lend some drama to the meet, though, as he was losing his Semi-final match 6-5 until he scored a dramatic two point reversal in the last 15 seconds to pull out a 7-6 decision over Ryan Garvey of Roger Bacon High School. Sean improved his record on the season to 25-5 with the 2nd place finish.

J.R. Mock took a very improbable path to the State Meet as he lost his first match by a score of 5-2 and then, facing elimination in every subsequent match, was able to string four straight victory’s together against opponents with a combined record of 115-35. J.R. then capped off the evening by defeating Scott Rush from Graham 7-5. Those victory’s enabled J.R. to take 3rd place and improved his record on the year to 30-5.

Joe Hall at 189 lbs and Chris Wolf at 215 lbs also competed for Greenon. Joe gained two victories by Pin at the meet but his stellar season ended when he lost a hard fought overtime match to David Snowden of Franklin High School . Joe’s season record ended at 26-9. Chris Wolf won his first match by pin but could not advance beyond that and ended his season with a loss to Ryan Creech of Eaton High School to finish the season with a record of 25-10.
