Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers

Three hours, three hours! How can a movie be so long yet acclomplish so little plot wise. What we have here is three hours of battle scenes intercut with various scenes of characters walking around doing very little. Though the battle scenes are rather cool at times it is usually unclear as to what is going on as everything is so quick and jumpy, the camera doesn't stay still during these segments and you'll have to watch very carefully to see who just killed who. The CGI on the whole is superb, the only let down is the trees that come to life, they just look a bit poor compared to some of the other computer generated characters (namely Gollum).

Frodo and Sam, left alone after the fellowship split, are completely dull in this movie. Frodo as a hero is stupid anyway, he's not a very smart or interesting character. The scenes these two share are an utter waste of time. The fact that there are a few plots going on at once causes a big problem, you may be completely engrossed with what's going on with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli but then suddenly it will cut to Frodo and Sam for half an hour and you'll just feel like skipping that bit and going back to the part that you were actually enjoying. The final battle, as great as it is, is ruined by the scenes with the talking trees that constantly interrupt the fighting, this would be slightly more bearable if the talking trees were at all interesting! It seems to me as if there are just too many characters in this movie, there's not much of a focus, so all the characters remain slightly undeveloped.

This is still a good film, but it has to be said that it is too long and slightly erratic, it lacks focus and direction, the plot doesn't get very far even though the film seems to last a lifetime. Fans of the book will love this, why? because instead of reading it again they can just watch it. Anyone who hasn't read the book will just be wondering what the hell is going on and why it's taking so long. I'm still forced to give this a high score, the truth is that some people do love this and it is pretty ambitous. It must have taken a lot of work to complete and the CGI is definately worth recognition.
