| Pulp Fiction: Collectors Edition This is a movie split into three major intertwining stories, the first focuses on Vincent Vega (John Travolta) a hitman who is asked by his boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) to take his wife, Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) out for dinner while he is briefly out of town. Vince must resist the urge to flirt with her and tries to get out while he can but a terrible mishap turns the non-date into a nightmare as he is put into an even worse situation. The second story focuses on Butch (Bruce Willis) a boxer who is paid to throw a fight by Marsellus, not only does Butch not lose the fight like he was supposed to, but he kills the other boxer. Marsellus is now out to get him so Butch flees to a hotel room with his french girlfriend and gets ready to leave the country. He is all set when she admits to leaving a very valuable possesion behind in Butch's apartment. The outraged Butch drives back to his place, where Marsellus' goons are bound to be waiting for him. His day also turns into a nightmare as an uxpected twist of events leads to something truly horrible. The third story puts the focus on Vince and his partner Jules (Samuel L Jackson) who have a major accident and must rectify the situation with the help of Jules' friend Jimmy (Quentin Tarantino) and The Wolf (Harvey Keitel). The movie isn't about action, it's about the stuff in between, the conversations between characters, the interaction. The dialogue is excellent, there are many comedic moments and great quotes to pick out. The characterization is extremely well done, the cast is fantastic, never before have I seen such a great list of actors working on one movie and all of them give amazing performances. This is my all time favourite movie, and why shouldn't it be? Full of memorable dialogue and interesting characters this was revolutionary at its time and is still, by todays standards, an awesome movie. But how does this new collectors edition DVD measure up? Lets start with the picture, which is 2.35:1 anamorphic, and for a movie that is eight years old now it couldn't look any better. Everything about the picture is almost perfect, it's extremely detailed with great colour, so far I haven't noticed any problems with it whatsoever. The sound can be heard in Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS. The DTS is obviously better but the movie doesn't really require much from the sound department, it's mainly dialogue, but it still comes across very clear. The movie comes in two discs, so you can expect some great extras. Disc one contains an enhanced trivia track, this is basically a text commentary that pops up at the bottom of the screen while you watch the movie, this makes up for the lack of a commentary from director Quentin Tarantino. There is also soundtrack chapter selection, which lets you jump to your favourite songs in the film, and a sneak peek at the Jackie Brown DVD. Disc two is where the real extras are. First up we have "Pulp Fiction: The Facts", a 30min documentary featuring interviews from the cast and crew, most of which were shot on set. Next we have "Siskel & Ebert: Tarantino Generation" which lasts around 16min and talks about the film and the popularity of QT. The "Production Design Featurette" is brief but not too bad. The "Independant Spirit Awards" is a 10 minute feature with interviews from QT and producer Lawrence Bender at the awards. There are five deleted scenes lasting around 20min with an introduction from QT, most of them are just extended scenes so they're not too interesting but certainly are worth a look. Now we come to the "Charlie Rose Show: Tarantino Interview" which is the full hour long episode of the show and is probably one of the best features on the disc since the interview is very long and definately interesting. A short but cool feature is the behind the scenes montage, which includes footage of two scenes being filmed, the Jack Rabbit Slims dance scene and the one where Butch hits Marsellus with his car. Also on the disc we have the "Palm D'Or Acceptance Speech" from Cannes, 5 Pulp Fiction Trailers, 13 TV Spots, Stills Galleries and reviews. Unlike the Region 1 release the Region 2 doesn't include DVD Rom material which would be a trivia game, a screenplay viewer and open mic commentary. Overall this is one hell of a movie on one hell of a disc, if this isn't a worthy buy for any movie fan I don't know what is. Picture- 10/10 Sound- 9/10 Extras- 9/10 Overall- 9/10 |
