ENTARTETE KUNST,
the band, was born in Barcelona back in 1996. The first line up was formed
by Miquel Cabal (drums and vocals), Àlex Gonzàlez (bass)
and Rodrigo E. Zapata (guitar). They used to play cover versions of their
favourite artists, like Joy Division, Buzzcocks, The Stooges, and Ramones
in the warehouse of a dump bar. «Entartete
Covers» and the industrial live improvisation «Entartete
Neubauten» are a great example of their music at that time. They
played on 20th of June 1997 at a birthday party and, after that, Mario
Albarracín (keyboards) became a new member of the band.
ENTARTETE KUNST moved their rehearsals to the Poblenou area of Barcelona, and on 24th of April 1998 recorded their first demos, that included three own songs and a brief track of the «Entartete Neubauten» live improvisation. Instead of doing lots of concerts, they decided to join up Josep Miralles at drums and Guillem Redolat at metal and percussions. As a result, Miquel Cabal could finally change the drumsticks into the guitar, and they recorded «New Noise», an eight track demo that was presented in «Humedad Relativa» on 21st of March 1999. The musical press describes «New Noise» and the music of ENTARTETE KUNST in general, as a mixture of the British «new wave» and the American «no wave», with bands like Joy Division, The Cure, Bauhaus, Sonic Youth, Pixies or Placebo amongst its influences. By that time, the
band tried to find a new drummer, but after rehearsing with several different
drum players they bought a rhythm machine: Dr. Trunyelo, which was their
more accurate drummer for a while. The band moved their rehearsals to L´Hospitalet,
and made two concerts with a new drummer, David Fernández.
