Types of Cloth Diapers and Covers | |||
There are five basic types of cloth diapers. The first three require a cover in order to be waterproof; the second two have a built-in cover. A flat diaper is usually a one-layer piece of fabric between 27 and 36 inches square. (They also come in other shapes, sizes, and thicknesses.) A prefold diaper is a smaller, rectangular multi-layer piece of cloth that is thicker in the middle. Prefolds come in different sizes and thicknesses. A 4x6x4 prefold has 4 layers on the outer thirds and 6 layers in the middle. A fitted diaper is an hourglass-shaped piece of cloth with waist and leg elastic and snap or Velcro fasteners. It is made to go on like a disposable. (There are also contour or shaped diapers, which are baby-shaped but do not have elastic or fasteners; prefitteds, which have elastic but not fasteners; and pocket fitteds, which have an opening in the back for stuffing with additional absorbency.) An all-in-one diaper is like a fitted diaper, but with a waterproof layer sewn to the outside so that no separate cover is required. A pocket diaper is a waterproof diaper cover sewn on three sides to a stay-dry polyester layer. The back is left open for stuffing with something absorbent--cotton, microfiber, or hemp. Pocket diapers function like all-in-ones after they have been stuffed. Flats, prefolds, and fitteds can all be used coverless for extra breathability, but they require a separate cover in order to be waterproof. The old style vinyl or plastic pants are becoming a thing of the past. Modern diaper covers come in four materials: Nylon is inexpensive and waterproof, but not breathable, and can't be washed with the diapers. PUL (polyurethane laminate) is slightly more expensive, waterproof, and easy to care for, but still not breathable, though this varies from cover to cover. Wool is the only natural fiber diapering material. It is extremely breathable. It is also quite expensive and not completely waterproof. It must be hand washed in a special kind of soap. However, it rarely needs washing as it does not hold a smell. Fleece (polyester fleece) is the synthetic answer to wool. It is breathable and expensive and DOES hold a smell, but it is easy to care for. It is not completely waterproof. Diaper covers may be Velcro wrap style like disposables, front snapping, side snapping, or pull-on. Home |
