Kremsmünster, Oberöst.
Kremsmünster is completely subject to the Stift, the most ancient monastery in all of Austria.  As the note below illustrates, Kremsmünster was founded in 777, more than 1,200 years ago, when the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III went hunting in the area and found his son and heir dead.  In his grief, Tassilo vowed to build a monastery on the spot, adn gave funds to do so to some Irish monks.  Timing was fortunate, for Tassilo and his Bavarian duchy were overthrown by Charlemagne soon after.  In the depths of the Dark Ages, Kremsmünster was a point of light, and around the monastery grew the current town.
