Shane's reaction
15/03/2004
Sunday Times

...While a statement from the singer’s management last week dismissed the campaign, fans felt this had not been ratified by Shane because the singer was on holiday in Spain. After being traced to Barcelona by The Sunday Times this weekend, he said: “I don’t want to discuss this. My family is nothing to do with you.”

Asked if he planned to change management, he said: “No, I am not going to sack Joey Cashman. It’s none of your business, but I’m not.”

Maurice MacGowan, a senior executive with C&A in Britain who retired to Tipperary in 1986, said he would like his son to set up a new organisation.“It’s Shane’s decision at the end of the day. We just give our views. Joey Cashman is an old friend and Shane is very loyal to his friends.”
Shane and Joey: The missed interview
HotPress

Contacted last week on the eve of Shane MacGowan’s Dublin Olympia gig, Joey Cashman told hotpress that he was anxious to give his and Shane’s side of the story. He dismissed criticisms from Shane’s father Maurice MacGowan with the accusation that MacGowan senior has “lost the plot”. Joey invited hotpress to meet himself and Shane at the Deepark Hotel in Howth where they were both staying, for an interview. The interview was later rescheduled for the Olympia itself, but despite turning up at the venue and making repeated calls to his mobile phone number, we were unable to track him down. So far, the manager’s only response to the controversy – and an on- line petition by MacGowan fans calling for his removal – has been to fax hotpress a statement that purports to be from Shane and urges that “no business matters relaying to Shane MacGowan should be conducted or discussed with Mr. Maurice MacGowan or any other person claiming to represent him.”
...
hotpress has been unstinting in its praise for the music of Shane MacGowan. We would welcome the opportunity to talk to both Shane and Joey Cashman and to give them the opportunity to respond to all of the criticisms made by fans of Shane’s and by former members of The Popes.

Shane: management hit back.. (25/03/2004)
The Hot Press Newsdesk

The Shane MacGowan organisation has responded to the current controversy surrounding the singer and which is highlighted in the latest issue of Hotpress.

Reads an official statement: "There has been some vindictive campaign circulating in the press and on the internet, from some misinformed and disgruntled people, calling themselves fans, trying to persuade Shane to sack his long term manager and friend, Joey Cashman. They have about as much chance of making this happen as they have of Shane replacing Brian McFadden in Westlife!

"One of the reasons that Shane & Joey have worked together for so many years is that Shane can trust Joey implicitly to have his best interests at heart. Above all, they are lifelong friends. To put the record straight, there have no cancellations whatsoever of live dates that have been arranged by Joey & his organisation.

"The 'fans', as they call themselves, who are trying to sabotage his shows are failing miserably. The last tour has been a sell out !  Shane's real fans are still right behind him and thrilled that he is doing so much at the moment. Shane will be talking to the press in person about this once he has completed this next batch of shows, as he is not happy about it."

The statement ends by pointing out that Shane is about to appear alongside Johnny Depp and John Malkovich in a new cult movie, The Libertine, and joins old pal Jools Holland later in the month in London's Royal Albert Hall.
