Sports & Culture
Nicaraguans enjoy playing a variety of sports, the most popular of which is baseball, or, as Nicaraguans call it, the "king sport." It developed a following in the early 1900s, and Nicaragua's first international victory in sport was on the diamond, when the country defeated Costa Rica and US marines stationed in Panama between 1924 and 1925. In 1939, Nicaragua participated for the first time in the World Cup of Amateur Baseball, placing second. Pres. Anastasio Somoza García (1937-56) promoted national baseball by building stadiums. Although Nicaragua has never won a world championship title in the sport, it has often placed second and third, and several Nicaraguan players have achieved international recognition, most notably pitcher Denis Martinez, who enjoyed a long career in major leagues of the United States. Boxing is also a major attraction in Nicaragua. Boxing started early in the 20th century in contests among the country's provinces (principally León, Granada and Managua), but Nicaragua did not receive international attention in the sport until the second half of the century. Alexis Arguello became world champion in three boxing classes and retained his title for many years. Other popular sports include football, weightlifting, swimming and chess. A traditional male-dominated society, little attention has been given to women's sport. During the Sandinista regime, however, the revolutionary government promoted sports activities among women, and some female athletes have succeeded nationally and internationally in such disciplines as swimming and running.
Nicaragua made its first Olympic appearance in 1968 at the Mexico City Games and has competed regularly, except for its absence at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. The country has never competed at the Winter Games, and its highest finish was 11th in a weightlifting event.
