THE BAKER

No country may exist without industry. The destinies of a people, its social and moral life, even its religion, may depend upon the activities and resource of its commercial men.

As they move, the community moves with them. The admirable sentiment that what was good for our grandfather is good for us, is now an established fundamental blunder.

All ideas must accommodate themselves to the fluctuations of the times. Conditions change with the moon, and though many steps in the direction of progress are ill-timed, out of the nettles of "mistake" we pluck this flower "Truth".

Port Macquarie is fortunate in claiming some business men whose dispositions and personality are composed of the right ingredients.

One of the chief of these is W. DOAK.

The many calls and exigencies of his business still give him time and inclination to visualise ideals for the good of his district.

Realising the true possibilities of the Port as a harbour for tourists, he concentrated early efforts on a scheme to improve the fine camping reserve with shelter and water.

Future visitors finding many utilities devised for their comfort will come to learn that much of their enjoyment is due to the thought and care of this Master of the Bakehouse.

Certain apathy and indifference in the composition of his fellows who might easily have done as he did, failed to disturb his own inherent ardour, for by their faith alone such men as he know that they may kindle a light, that others may see and profit by it.

And there are no two ways about his BREAD.
