Father Junipero Serra and California Mission links!
In the 1700s, Spain had control of what is now Mexico and wanted to occupy what is now California so that the Russians wouldn't take the land. At the
time, the Spanish government and the Catholic Church were working side by side; therefore, to occupy this new land (California), the Spanish sent missionaries to start up missions. These missions were to be settlements that would help the native people in the land learn about God and how to live like the Spanish (growing crops, taking care of cattle and horses, etc..) The missionary that was called to head up these new missions was Father Junipero Serra. Fr. Serra and other missionaries created 21 missions in California and they were active until Mexico (independent from Spain) stopped them in 1833. The missions then started a period of deterioration until the mid 1900s when historians and concerned citizens started a ground swelling of support to fix up the old missions as part of California history. Here below are links to information on Father Junipero Serra and the California Missions. Enjoy.
