Calgary - The United Nation's envoy on HIV-AIDS in Africa is not impressed with the new plan for African development. Stephen Lewis outlined his concerns in a speech in Calgary Friday night. "...sub-saharan Africa will be in a desperate struggle for survival"
"If however, nothing, or an infinitesimal sum is ear-marked for the global fund, then a number of countries in sub-saharan Africa will be in a desperate struggle for survival."
Lewis says the development plan, called NEPAD, makes only one reference to HIV-AIDS. He says none of NEPAD's other goals can be achieved if more resources are not dedicated to fighting the disease. He called on G-8 leaders meeting in Kananaskis next week, to secure more funding to fight the epidemic.
He says if G8 countries agree to spend more money fighting AIDS, it would be what he calls, a legacy of principle and honour for Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
