CALGARY - There will be a growing military presence in the area west of Calgary this week as preparations for the G-8 summit continue.
The military is playing a key role in summit security ensuring that no one interferes with the summit site in Kananaskis. It's believed 5,000 soldiers will be deployed in the area, and there will be military fighter jets and helicopters in the air during the meeting.
Canadian Forces Maj. Luc Gaudet says people will notice the increased military presence soon.
"Both in Calgary and on the highways and roads, and especially in the Kananaskis Valley, there will be some increased military presence – increased military activity – convoys, all sorts of equipment moving on the roads and also some activities in the air."
The G-8 summit will be held on June 26 and 27 at Kananaskis Village.
