A routine Suffield military exercise is hitting close to home as troops prepare to launch a massive G-8 defence plan.
Missiles from the military's ground-based air defence and anti-tank system (ADATS) are headed to Kananaskis to keep the sky clear of potential terrorist activity.
"It's going to be used to defend Kananaskis Village in the context of the G-8 summit," said Col. Mike McLean.
"It will be part of a layered defence that will employ air de-fence systems, F-18s, airborne and ground-based sensor systems that can react at a moment's notice to anything that comes our way."
Air space over the summit site will be restricted, with military weapons poised to strike at any unauthorized aircraft in that area.
"It's a big deal, there's no question about it," McLean said.
