Undisclosed information that could affect the G8 summit in Kananaskis, Alta., June 26-27, has prompted federal officials to launch a crackdown at border crossings and airports across Canada.
An increased number of vehicles will be searched for restricted items, such as weapons and pepper spray, and more people than usual will be questioned, Gordon Luchia, a spokesman with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, said yesterday.
He would not specify the information Canada Customs received or its source. "At this time, we have a lot of intelligence being given to us, and as a result, we're able to know who to look at and who not to look at."
RCMP Corporal Jamie Johnston said Mounties are patrolling the areas between entry points along the Alberta-Montana boundary.
Activists said that the clampdown, which is causing long delays at border crossings, appears to target protesters.
