It amazes me that the Citizen, after losing its publisher, can be so unapologetically biased against the Take the Capital protests in Ottawa. You'd think that now of all times, the Citizen would be promoting a diversity of opinions, in order to get a fair sense of why there is such virulent opposition to the G8 meeting in Alberta next week.
Instead, we're subjected to a national editorial dismissing thousands of passionate, articulate citizens as idiots. We're bombarded with atrociously poor news pieces that can't even get the name of the protest right, referring to "Take Back the Capital." Predictably, we're told again and again about the bogus division differentiating "good" protesters who aren't violent and "bad" ones who are.
I want Citizen readers to know that there have been explicitly non-violent actions planned right from the very inception of this protest.
The largest single event next week is the march of 1,000 flags of resistance, which is and has always been a child-friendly, multi-generational, peaceful rally and march. It is being marshalled by Take the Capital organizers.
I sincerely hope the Citizen covers the events with fairness and critical astuteness. To do any less really is cheating your readers and showing us who the real "idiots" are.
David-James Fernandes,
Ottawa
