Chapter 1
Web Activity 1 - Arguments

1.  Since the state of Texas promotes a student-centered classroom, I would explain the following reasons for using computers in the classroom and why they would be of benefit and not a distraction.  When integrating technology in the classroom, (1) the student is actively engaged in the learning process, (2) the student assumes the role of a researcher rather than a passive listener, and (3) the student becomes technologically competent which will help them in the future.

2.  In addition to the first argument, I would also research programs that local retailers have established to help povide computers in the classroom, I know several stores promote item collection programs in order to provide technology supplies to local schools.

3.  I would also explain to the principal that in order to keep up with state and national standards, the school district must find a way to implement the use of computers in the school and the classrooms.  This could be through grants or a bond election if necessary.

Web Activity 2 - Questions

1.  I think the use of handheld computers or PDAs in the classroom is a bad idea.  In my experience in my business office, there are often several problems in sync'ing the devices with the computer software.  Problems arise when software updates are made with the office system and home system.  Even though these devices can be very convenient, they can also end up being very labor intensive.  So I think they would be event more labor intensive with students in the classroom.

2.  I believe handheld computers would support open-ended problems rather than a beneficial experience.  Again, I think the handheld computers would create more problems than learning experiences.  I believe learning would become more frustrating than collaborative for the teachers and the students due to technological difficulties that might not be addressed in a timely manner.

NTeQ Portfolio Activity - Questions

1.  I'm not yet exactly sure how I will use computers in my classroom.  I plan on teaching the early grades, hopefully somewhere between Kindergarten through 2nd grade.  I think it might work to have the children use Microsoft Powerpoint, Word, Excel and Publisher to complete some activities.  Once I have a little more experience in the classroom, I will know more of what will suit the needs of the students and my lessons.

2.  I believe that technology integration means using technology to accomplish the objectives of certain lessons.  Also, facilitating students use of technology in order for them to become familiar and comfortable with different types of technology, since ultimately they will be using it in the future.
