 Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry was one of the seminal reading moments of my childhood. It's a wonderful story -- although not a happy one; how could anything about the plight of sharecroppers in the south during the Depression be happy? But it's SUCH a great reading experience. I've read and re-read this book so many times I practically have it memorized. Great for educating privileged white kids on our (U.S.) not so stellar history. And I say that from experience.
