SALVATION
I'M STILL REMEMBERING (ALBUM VERSION)
I JUST SHOT JOHN LENNON (LIVE VERSION)

LYRICS:

It was the fearful night of December 8th.
He was returning home from the studio late.
He had perseptively known that it wouldn't be nice.
Because in 1980, he paid the price.

John Lennon died. John Lennon died. John Lennon died.
John Lennon died. John Lennon died. John Lennon died.

With a Smith & Wesson 38,
John Lennon's life was no longer a debate.
He should have stayed at home,
He should have never cared,
And the man who took his life declared,

He said I just shot John Lennon.
He said I just shot John Lennon.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.

Ah, ah ah ah, ah...

I just shot John Lennon.
He said I just shot John Lennon.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.

Ah, ah ah ah, ah...

Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan: "I was reading a book about John Lennon's life. I could relate to the fact that when you're a famous person everybody wants to tell you what you should do and who you should be with. Everybody judges you all of the time. I always thought that people judged his relationship with Yoko a little too much, that obviously the man was in love with the woman, and [people] should have left him alone."

In the LP "To The Faithful Departed" there is the studio version. In this version there are 5 gunshots at the end: "For the gunshots at the end of 'I Just Shot John Lennon' we tried to figure out how many times he got shot. I don't think anyone found out so we just guessed at around five." -Fergal-

"I Just Shot John Lennon" is a revealing of O'Riordan's cushy fantasies. In one of his American tours O'Riordan performed some numbers on a platform high above the stage. She wasn't just putting herself above her band (whom she barely acknowledged), but above us, too. "I Just Shot John Lennon" tells you why: because you never know what sort of slob is waiting out there in the dark. "In 1980 he paid the price," O'Riordan sings, "He should have stayed at home/He should never have cared," and it's clear she means that Lennon should never have cared about trying to rejoin public life, never have cared about us.
