IN MAGALLÓN

  Territory

Big plains sprinkled by hills where plasters, calcareous, clays, alabaster, saline blooming,... compose the underground. While, the river Huecha which is born in the Moncayo crosses the municipality skirting the town centre.

  Climate

It is a mediterranean climate with continental features, that is to say, with strong thermal oscillations between winter and summer. The sun shines some 2.600 annual hours.

The wind of the northwest, called Cierzo, blows strongly (sometimes over 100km/h), persistently and is dry and cold the whole year.

The winters are long, cold and stable. With some days of fog and very scarce days of snow. Sometimes due to winds coming from the arctic a wave of cold lowers the temperatures to ten degrees Celsius under zero.

The summers are also long, hot and stable. With great electric storms, hail and rain. Some days winds of the desert of the Sahara cause heatwaves in those the temperatures shoot above the 40 degrees Celsius.

In general the rain is very scarce and irregular. There are frequently droughts, as much in summer as in winter; while the springs and the autumns are short, very unstable and with bigger quantities of rain.

Where there are no cultivation fields the mediterranean thicket extends occupying old holm oak forests (quercus rotundifolia): rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis), thyme (thymus vulgaris), lavender (lavandula spica), furze (genista scorpius), rockrose; and some pines (pinus halepensis) replanted in the mount.

On the other hand, in the bank of the river Huecha a new plantation of poplars (populus alba) grow where before there were riverside forests. Numerous canes also grow, rushes, reed (phragmites australis), bulrushes (typha latipholia), tamarinds (tamarix gallica), licorices (glycryrrhiza glabra), blackthorns (prunus spinosa), blackberries (rubus fruticosa), ...

While among the boundaries of the cultivation fields trees grow, such as elm trees (ulmus minor) and figs (ficus carica), and bushes that provide an important role against the erosion as well as giving cover small mammals and birds.
