PAUL McCARTNEY. A GARLAND FOR LINDA
110-Page Songbook featuring all the 9 songs of A GARLAND FOR LINDA
A Garland for Linda is a commemoration of the life of Linda McCartney.
It is an evocative and moving cycle of nine songs for a cappella chorus to commemorate the life of Linda McCartney. Modelled on the precedent of A garland for the Queen, of 1953, nine British composers, including Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Richard Rodney Bennet, John Rutter and John Tavener, have been inspired to compose music of considerable expressiveness and beauty. The texts for the works range from an anonymous Pima Indian poem to one of Tennyson's finest works and capture a wide range of mood, from anger to despair and to reconciliation. Above all, the cycle shows the power of music to provide hope to those who are suffereing from ill health, everywhere.
A Garland for Linda was premiered at the Chapel of Charterhouse School, Godalming on Sunday 18 July 1999. This concert formally launched The Garland Appeal which aims to raise £.2m for breast and liver cancer research and to promote British music.
