November 2010

Joey was picking up apples, testing their firmnessBessie and herself liked them firmwhen a familiar voice called her into reality.

Joey, how wonderful to see you. Joey turned to see Gale, smiling, holding a basket. She looked great, her hair just cut short and wispy, still so slimshe didnt look like she was in her fifties at all. Gale put her basket down and hugged Joey warmly, I had no idea you were going to be in town this weekendbut then it makes sense. How is Bessie?

Joey shrugged, Shes reacting to the chemo, as you know. She doesnt even look sick. She kissed Gale on the cheek and balanced her on basket. She always looked so healthy, Gale said, shaking her head and reaching for some apples of her own.

How are you lately? I havent seen you inohmonths. But Ive seen you a lot more than Ive seen my own son, she added wryly.

Like every time someone mentioned Dawson, Joeys heart started to run a little faster. Have you heard from him lately? she asked, trying to be tactful. She herself had been too preoccupied with work and Bessie and Pacey to give him a proper call.

Yes, actually. Gales face changed a little and she sighed long and hard, You wont believe whats happened. Joeys head snapped up.

What? Is Mark okay?

Mark is fine. He just turned fourteen months. He doesnt really know what is going on. Michelle left. Gale said grimly.

She what? Joey exclaimed, dropping an apple onto the floor.

I knew she was trouble the moment I laid eyes on her, Gale said, shaking her head. SosoFrench.

Joey bit her lip to stop from laughingor cryingor any unsuitable emotion.

Her heart yearned to be near him.

Why did she leave? Joey asked in extreme anxiety.

She fell in love with someone else, so Dawson says, with a Frenchman, and went back to Paris. Something about painting her in the nude. Dawson wasnt clear on details. He sounded fine, but of course he isnt, Gale said quickly. I demanded he come home this instant, but hes stubborn, you know that.

I do. Joey murmured.

Here. Gale was taking a small card out of her purse. Heres his number. You try. You might have better luck.

Thanks Mrs. Leery, Joey said, putting it into her jeans pocket.

How are you really, Joey? Gale said, leaning forward and wiping an eyelash off Joeys cheek with her forefinger.

Hows Pacey?

We broke up, Joey confirmed with a shrug. In July.

Any particular reason? Gale raised her eyebrows, and they moved on towards vegetables.

You know Joey said thoughtfully, Not something in particular. Just a whole lot of things. Of courseits probably not serious. More of a trialseparation. Joey smiled a little, He wants to get back together.

I see. Gale rubbed Joeys arm in support.

When Dawson answered the phone, Joey froze. Her silence caused Dawson to repeat--hello?

Dawson?

Joey?

Yeah. She laughed, happy to hear his voice, she twirled the telephone cord around her finger.

Its so good to hear you, Dawson.

Dawson laughed, and despite the Atlantic Ocean between them, his warm, familiar laugh sent chills down her spine.

Its good to hear you too, Jo.

Your mom told me about Michelle. Im sure she did...

Dawsonyoure notalone in London with Mark, are you? Joey put the phone to her other ear.

No, I have friends, Joey.

Please come home. She said softly.

Did my mom put you up to this?

No, Im doing this independently, Joey said truthfully.

He sighed, I dont think Im ready to go home yet. You mean youd prefer to stay in a place where Michelles memory will haunt you? Joey argued, flopping down on the couch and raising her eyebrows at Bessie who peered in, curious.

Its not haunting me. Dawson retorted.

Is she going to try and take Mark? Joey asked briskly.

Dawson snorted sardonically. Ive already sent her custody papers. Shes not going within ten feet of him.

Joey hadnt heard him sound sodefiant, so angry for a while, and she was quiet for a moment.

Im sorry Jo. Dawson coughed, then his voice sounded farawayMark, put that down.

Joey smiled. She had met Mark only once, when she and Audrey had gone over to London shortly after he was born. He had been the atypical babysmall, red, scrunched up eyes, but there was something special about him. He was Dawsons baby.

And Michelles baby too. Michelle and Dawson had met on the set of a movie Dawson had been producing and co-writing with Guy Ritchie. (Dawsons drastic career change had brought him all over Europe) she had been the pretty, sparkly French make-up artist the whole crew was fond of.

At the time she had been dating one of the actors in the moviethats how she got the job-- but she and Dawson had hit it off and she dumped the actor shortly after. Joey had liked Michelleof course, now, that like was diminishing. She had been very arty and passionate, with a lovely, drawling accent, and a likeness to, dare Joey say it, Jen---full lips, curly thick golden hair, petite, but with green eyes.

Joey was pretty sure Dawson hadnt dated her just because of it, though. They had always seemed genuinely affectionateand very sex crazed. Many a time Joey had called him and he had answered the phone breathless, with Michelles voice in the backgroundtell them were buzy and Dawsons embarrassed chuckle. When Michelle fell pregnant they both seemed so happy, not freaked at all. Dawson had called her at 2am with the news and Joey had been so shocked she had walked around in a daze the next dayDawson, a father? This was the man, the boy, she had known since she was five years old, and he had a child.

Do you know why? Joey asked as gently as she could.

Why she left?

Yes?

Not really. Michelle knows, though. She said she was a horrible mother, that I was too good for herall of that bullshit.

Maybe she really thinks that, Joy pointed out.

I dont know. Dawson said gravely, and Joey could *hear* him rake a hand through his hair.

She did do some strange things. I was worried about her. She had a fucked up childhood. I didnt know. Joey wrinkled her brow. What happened? Her mother beat her senseless. She still has scars. Oh jeez. Joey was shocked. Dawson took a deep, raggedy breath. Michelle tried to kill herself, Joey. With pills, then drugs. And then two weeks later she tells me shes going back to Paris, with Jean Luches a musician. Into coke.

What is her problem? Joeys voice raised almost hysterically. You were there to help her! Instead of abandoning your son Joey, chill, Dawson chided gently, now soothing her.

You have to come home. I need tobe there for you, Joey finished off lamely.

Where are you? Dawson said simply, and she could hear the rustling of papers. In Capesidefor now. Its Alexs eleventh birthday on Saturday, and Joey lowered her voice, Bessies sick.

I heard that. Bessie called from the kitchen.

Well its true! Joey yelled back.

Why? What? Dawson sounded alarmed.

Shes having chemo. I thought your mom told youshe has breast cancer.

Joey anxiously checked her watch again, and flipped another page in People, impatient. His flight should have already landed. The airport was bustling, but Joey hardly noticed. She hadnt seen Dawson for almost a year, and she couldnt believe he was coming backpermanently, she hoped. Dawson had said he wasnt sure. Either way, he was lucky, his career allowed him to be flexible.

The first wring of people stepped through the terminal gate and Joey stood up, her heart pounding. She discarded her magazine, and craned her neck.

Then she saw him. He didnt see her at first and stood, stationary, in the crowd of people, his hand supporting his sons lulling head. He looked distinguished but casual in a suede jacket. An attractive flight attendant approached him and they seemed to talk for a few moments, the flight attendant delighted to have his attention, her hand stroking Marks curls. Dawson then said his goodbye and turned his head, and finally he saw her.

Joey was literally dumbstruck, her breath was completely taken away. His hair was darker, he looked older, built, and his eyes had changed.

And he was a father.

But when he smiled, it was as though he had never been away. Gently angling Mark so he wouldnt wake up, Dawson strode towards her and hugged Joey as tightly as he could, and she closed her eyes, inhaling his woodsy scent.

****

Mmm, looks appetizing, Joey said, wrinkling her nose at Marks pumpkin mash. He seems to like it, Dawson said, shrugging his shoulders. When you were his age you liked the apple mash, Gale teased her son, to be met with a vindictive, Mom

They were sitting around the dining table that evening, Gale thrilled to have her son and grandson back home. Lily loved having her brother home, but less thrilled Dawson and Joey were there at the same time, that meant she wasnt going to be paid as much attention as she would have liked.

They were sweetly affectionate, Joey covering his hand with hers, Dawson gently touching her shoulder blade or the dip of her back with the underside of his hand. What they didnt say verbally they said with touches. Dawson only spoke briefly of Michelle, telling his mother she was still in Paris and hadnt contacted him yet, and then he avoided the topic altogether, focusing completely on his son, Lily and Joey.

After eight, he went upstairs with Mark and Joey followed him. Hes so beautiful, Dawson, she said softly, touching a lock of blonde hair on Marks head as Dawson propped a pillow against the side of the crib which had once belonged to Lily.

Dawson smiled and flipped the light out in the bedroom. His mother is. He looks more like you, Joey pointed out in a hushed tone, following him out of the bedroom.

He is blond, Dawson agreed, still a closed book. Lily then demanded he tuck her in, and while he was doing that, Joey helped Gale clean up in the kitchen.

Hes truly a wonderful father, Gale sighed, rinsing a plate. Joey smiled as she wiped a glass dry. He was so good with Lily and Alex. If only his relationships with girlfriends went as smoothly as they did with Lily and Mark Gale said, rolling her eyes and turning off the tap.

I think we all have that problem, Joey smiled ruefully, wiping the last glass, and then going over to help Gale pour tea.

It doesnt matter how old we are. Gale laughed. Her husband, Harry, was on yet another business trip. Unlike Mitch who had liked to stay close to home, Harry opted to travel, but when he was home he kept saying how much he loved being there. You love him, dont you? Gale suddenly asked, catching Joey by surprise. Whyof course I do, Joey faltered.

He needs someone like you in his life, Gale said steadily, not looking at Joey as she picked up a cup of tea and sipped it.

I know, Mrs. Leery. Joey replied firmly. He loves you. Despite already knowing this, Joey blushed.

****

So, I want to know all about you, Dawson said warmly, that night as he and Joey walked back towards the B & B.

You know all about me and my twisted lifeI dropped out of my creation The Creek because of 90210 syndrome, I have a fourteen month old son, and I always date the wrong kind of girls.

Joey giggled, reaching for his hand to squeeze. Youre also incredibly strong with lots of charisma.

I want to know about you, Jo he swung their hands in the air. Hows Pacey? Your job? The city?

Ohmmm. Joey shrugged. Pacey and I broke up. What? Dawson dropped their hands. When did that happen?

July. It wasnt a big deal. Its a huge deal, Dawson retorted. You two were together two years! What happened? We needed a break. Joey said simply, surprised at how surprised he was. Two years is a long time. Pacey was getting sick of the city. Itsmore of a trial separation. She added.

Ah. Dawson nodded thoughtfully. Soyoure single. He looked at her sideways. More or less. Why, are you going to ask me about or something? Joey teased, grinning. Dawson snorted, And get myself into more trouble then I already am?

Should I be insulted? Joey exclaimed as they approached the Potter residence. No. he leaned down to kiss her cheek. The rough stubble of his cheek against hers caused Joey to close her eyes, out of nostalgia. Night Jo. Thanksforeverything. He then looked up at the darkened house. Tell Bessiewell, Ill be around tomorrow to see her. Shed like that. Shes always liked you, Joey said, smiling, walking backwards.

Dont know why. He joked, and then he turned and walked away. She watched him leave from the porch, and as she unlocked the front door she realized she was really looking forward to seeing him again the next day.

****

When Joey got up and stumbled into the kitchen the next day, she wasnt prepared to see Dawson sitting at the table, laughing with Bessie over pictures in a thick photo album.

Dawson! What a surprise she exclaimed, grappling with her dressing gown to cover her skimpy, faded, ten year old pink nightgown. Oh god. Of all the mornings to go around wearing old-faithful, she picked this one. Her cheeks flamed as Dawson appraised her, smiling, looking as fresh as a daisy in a blue shirt, his suede jacket that brought out the color of his eyes and unwrinkled jeans.

Morning. He dutifully looked away as she tied her belt and grabbed her just-washed frizz-ball-before-blow-drying hair and yanked it back, trying to smooth it.

Bessie, rightfully amused, archly remarked, Its not like hes never seen you this early in the morning, Jo.

Bessie Joey said, embarrassed, pouring herself some coffee. I meant as kids, Joey. Bessie said, making it all even more embarrassing. Hey, you look great, Dawson convinced. You should see me the moment I wake up. Night of the living dead.

Joey poked her tongue out at him, sipped her coffee and smiled to herself. Not. A sleeping Dawson looked like an Angel. After getting her caffeine, she made a getaway to make herself look more acceptable.

She knew she was being sillyshe and Dawson used to take baths together, theyd seen each other through their awkward stagesshe knew him as and defended him as Oompa Loompa, he had known her as the convicts daughter.

They had seen each other at their worst and at their best. And naked, of course. Every birthmark and seemingly misplaced mole. But todayJoey didnt know exactly why, but she wanted to lookgood. It was a mixture of not having seen him for a while, of for once in two years being single, of seeing him look so damn good she just had to compare. Michelle had always been so put together.

Joey stifled her thoughts as she quickly applied lip-gloss after brushing her teeth. He was still out there when she made a grander entrance, in faded jeans and an amber flecked sweater, and saw he was this time conversing with Alex about Lily and how he could whip her ass at softball. Dawson was reminding Alex lily was smaller than him, and Alex looked a bit outragedbut shes just as strong.

Alex Joey sent him a warning-I-want-time-alone-with-Dawson look, and Alex interpreted it as such, scrunching up his face in disgust and bounding off.

Joey joined Dawson at the table, scooting her chair closer to his and flashing him a smile, lifting the photo album cover to see what he and Bessie had been looking at. Oh no Seventh grade. Joeys awkward period--- too tall, skinny knees, hunched shouldersoh god. Dawson tugged Joeys pony tale. I liked what you were wearing before. Hmph, Joey snorted, as Bessie walked in carrying more albums. OhBessie, no Joey begged.

Its appropriate, Joey, Bessie said firmly, placing them on the table. Joey rolled her eyes and covered them as Bessie poured over photographs of them all as young, in particular one when Bessie was fifteen and Joey was ten, huge eyes focused on Dawson who was two years away from his own awkward stage, his eyes squinting in the sun. Bessie looked bored. When Bessie went to put them all away and call Alex for breakfast, Dawson lowered his voice, She looks amazing for someone undergoing chemo.

She does, Joey agreed. Its justsuch a success story, Dawson. The doctors all say shes reacting to it, and Im so relieved yet so scared at the same time. I know. Dawson held her hand. You feel shell be taken away from youand itll be a shock.

Joey nodded, trying not to let her emotion show. She had hid it for months, ever since Bessie had called her with the news of the lump, only allowing herself to cry, once, while watching an old Bogart movie on the classic movies channel. Bessie had thought she was crying at the movie and had teased her.

But of course, nothing went past Dawson. He quickly put his arm around her. Joey sighed and held her hand to her temple. Dawson bent his head and pressed his forehead against hers, his mouth on her ear. It was only a simple embrace but it meant more than a thousand words. Bessie came in and saw them, and her smile dropped. Pep up, you two, she said after a pause, forcing a smile back on her face.

It was a rare Capeside day in the fallsunny and almost warm, the golds and reds and browns of the trees making the surrounding areas extremely pretty. Dawson remembered why growing up here had been so magical. L.ALondonno other place on earth had trees this color except for in New England.

He and Joey walked in companionable silence, just enjoying the busy town and Marks gurgles and shrieks and little fingers pointing as Dawson carried him. I cant believe its almost Christmas already, Joey said wryly, as they passed under elaborate decorations. Marks second, Dawson said, shaking his head and moving his son to the other side so he wouldnt reach up with his fingers and yank his hair.

Herelet me take him Joey offered, and Dawson laughed, Are you sure?

Very. I havent been able to see this little guy a lot. Dawson handed him to her gently, and Joey lifted Mark onto her hip. Mark looked over at his dad, his eyes wide, and Dawson waited for him to scream like he did when someone like Dawsons mom or one of his friends picked him up, but he didnt. Instead he started to suck his thumb, completely comfortable in Joeys arms.

See, Im good with babies, Joey laughed, seeing Dawsons surprise. She kissed Marks hair and gently took his thumb out of his mouth. After a few moments of walking Marks head dropped to her shoulder. Joey lovingly caressed his forehead.

You know, its different shopping with a woman. Dawson pointed out as they walked into a coffee shop. Well of course it is

I mean, with a woman holding my baby. Dawson corrected, taking out his wallet and ordering two coffees with cinnamon. When Im alone with Mark I get all sorts of peoplemostly womenasking me if Im a single father.

Oh, tacky. Joey wrinkled her nose, patting Marks little bottom to see if he was awake. Its not too badsometimes, Dawson grinned, taking the coffees and leading her over to a table by the window. Joey took off her coat and settled Mark on her lap.

Im thinking of getting a puppy, Dawson said jokingly, blowing on his coffee, A baby and a puppy will guarantee me dates. Youre too much, Joey said dryly, thinking that he most probably would. Already, she thought she could see some ex-Capeside High alums in the corner checking him out, wondering if it really was Dawson Leery, the boy who turned into a man, the man who had changed from the dreamer into the world-weary, the man who had changed her life so completely, the man who remained a mystery.

****

Driving to Dawsons one evening, (the rowboat was being hogged by Lily) Joey found herself singing along to Celind Dionshe *hated* Celine Dion. More Andies style, and she was smiling from ear to ear. And she honestly couldnt say why.

For the next few days they were inseparable. He would go over and stay with her one night and she would stay with him the next, and they would just talk for hours into the night, about everythingabout Pacey, Michelle, Mark, Jen well, not so much Michelle, though Joey did try to coax it out of him. He admitted to her one night, his head in her lap as she played with his hair and they didn't watch reruns of Friends, that Michelle had initially attracted him because of her similarities to Jen. Does that make me sick? he asked in desperation.

No, Joey said firmly, admiring how soft and thick and familiar his hair was, It makes sense. Im no therapist, buttheir similarities obviously stuck a chord with you. You were really attracted to Michelle. You loved her, I could tell.

Im not going to admit I loved someone who decided to abandon her son, Dawson said wryly. Joey said nothing for a moment, then she blurted out, She abandoned you too.

Dawson tensed and Joey sighed at her stupidity. I meantwell, youre always saying Michelle left Mark but first and foremost she left you.

I know. Dawson said steadily. Thanks foruh, enlightening me. Joeys hands stopped and she felt overwhelmed, but he reached up and grabbed them, squeezing them. Its okay. Youve beenamazing. I never thought after all this timewed still be here for each other. But we are. Itspretty great. When are youI meanare you going back to the city? Bessie mentioned

Not yet, Joey interrupted, smiling down at him, affectionately moving her hands to massage his neck.

Good. He closed his eyes, relaxing. Joey smiled, pleased he was beginning to open up.

*****

Cathy, Joeys boss, called her on Monday. How is your sister? she asked kindly but briskly. Shesbetter. Shes responding to chemo. Wonderful. Will it beat all possible for you to be in at work on Thursday? UmThursday? Joey said uncertainly, avoiding Bessies curious glance.

Not good? Well, you see Joey racked her brains for an excuse, but Cathy interrupted, Okay, then, how about next Thursday? We need you here, Joey.

Next Thursday will be fine. Thank you for understanding, Cathy, Joey said professionally, and she put the phone back up on the hook. Bessie snorted, Procrastinator.

Joey rolled her eyes, Im not leaving you just yet.

You know very well Im fine, Bessie said archly as she mixed cookie dough.

I know who you really dont want to leave. Despite keeping her cool at her sisters jabs, Joeys cheek flamedmore out of Bessies complete cluenessness than anything else! Hes having a hard time, Joey retorted. Mm-mm Bessie just flickered her eyebrow and went back to baking Alexs favorite cookies.

****

So it was that instead of going to work, Joey went to the Capeside Fair with Dawson and Lily. She couldnt remember the last time she acted sochildish. Well, more fun loving, anyway. She had gone on all the rides with Lily while Dawson held their stuff, and then towards the end Lily had grudgingly agreed to hold everything while she and Dawson went on the Ferris wheel and roller coaster together. It was cold high up on the wheel so she cuddled Dawson and they played rock the boat making the parents in the chair below them scowl and call them a couple of kids. Dawson then won Joey a big snoopy toy playing the hammer, and Lily sulked so he won Lily a princess doll and bought h??4?? er a root beer float. They then went crazy in the photo booth, Lily dictating their poses from silly faces to serious to kissy-kissy. Joey contemplated blowing off work for next Thursday too

This place is still sogreat, Joey sighed happily, angling her rum coke, and crossing her long legs at the bar, Your mom did a wonderful job.

Shes a true connoisseur, Dawson agreed, smiling at Mary, the cool waitress who handed him a beer.

Your mom is the best, Mary said enthusiastically, rubbing her hands on her tight, faded jeans. She had been stealing glances at him all night, Joey had noticed with a knowing smirk. The weird thing was, Dawson had been looking back. Okay, so he wasnt a monk, but Joey hadnt expected him torecover so quickly. If recovered was what he was. Earth to dimwit Joey waved her hand in front of his face as he craned his neck to watch Mary walk off, her long dark hair swishing behind her.

I think shed appreciate you more if you memorized her face, not her ass, Joey said dryly.

Dawson whipped his head back and chuckled, Busted.

They were having a drink at Leerys Fresh Fishnow twice renovated and resembling a typical Cape Cod bar with tables. It was one of Capesides prime spots on a Saturday nightfor that matter, on all the nights. It was Gales passion and she loved it. Joey was leaving for New York the next day, plans to come back in a fortnight, and she was dreading it. She couldnt believe itdreading leaving Capeside. What had become of her? Well, she had changed since Dawson had arrivedsince Bessie had gotten sick, actually. She began to enjoy life for what it wasthe simple things.

Like having a drink with Dawson and just talking, and that day had been fantasticjust being with him and Lily, acting like kids again at the carnival. They had shot some pool beforeJoey had forgotten how hopeless she wasand had almost fallen over in fits of laughter. Feeling a surge of affection, Joey reached up to squeeze the back of his neck. Dawson sipped his beer and cleared his throat, Michelle called.

What? Joey said slowly. When? What did she say? she set her hand down, feeling anger bubble up inside her.

This morning. Luckily my mom didnt answer the phone Dawson trailed off, staring into the distance.

He looked quickly at Joey, sensing her anger. She just wanted to talk. Soyou didnt hang up on her. No, Dawson managed to smile a little, but it was more of a grimace. We talked for over an hour. She wants to see us. Mark and I.

Oh wow, Joey said sarcastically. Dawson played with the rim of his cup, And it got me thinking, well, you cant help who you fall in love with. You know what Im talking about he finished reproachfully, and Joey felt like she had been socked.

But Joey squared her jaw. Michelle didnt just run off with someone else and rip your heart out, she left your son. She did attempt to see him but I wouldnt let her. Dawson admitted. He turned and looked at Joey. She wants me to meet up with her in Paris.

And she expects you to go? Joey scoffed. Im thinking about it.

Joey was about to say something but stopped when she saw the raw pain in his eyes. Instead, she covered his hand with her own, something she had started to do more often so he could *feel* her support without crushing the life out of him, and he smiled with relief.

***

Gale called Dawsons cell, telling him that Mark was asleep and to stay and eat something there, since she had no food in her kitchen. Joey enthusiastically agreed and led him over to a small table by the window, so they could look out at the water.

They shared a bottle of red wine and a bowl of fries, drenched in ketchupthats how they liked it, and just soaked up the atmosphere as well as slowly get drunk, and the conversation turned taboo.

I cant believe youre asking me that, Joey said mockingly, leaning he??4?? r cheek on her hand. Im alad-y. Not right now, youre not, Dawson said, filling her glass with the rest of the bottle. So go onlay my curiosity to rest.

Joey put her hand to her mouth and giggled. She flipped her hair over one shoulder and Dawson quickly moved the melting candles out of her way in case something only mildly amusing and flammable happened.

Four, she blurted out seriously, picking up her wine glass and wetting her lips with the luxurious alcohol.

Dawson was taken aback. Only four? Joey put her glass down and frowned, What do you mean only? Its justyoure so beautiful Dawson trailed off and Joey laughed, slapping his hand gently,

Oh please. Sowhat about you?

Dawson looked a bit flushed and he reached for a fry, dipping it in ketchup before bringing it to his mouth.

Um, he coughed, Fourteen, Joeys hand froze on the way to the fries and she stared at himwas he serious? Dawson? Her Dawson? Fourteen girls? Fourteen pairs of breasts?? Fourteen differentgod, he was only twenty-six! That means he slept with approximately two girls a year since he lost his virginity to Jen, not including his two and a half years with Michelle. Hmm. One thing about Joey when she was drunkshe was good at maths.

Joey stop, I know, Im a man-whore, Dawson said with a sigh, rubbing his eyes. Youre not a man whore, its just a little surprising, is all, Joey said bashfully. Who? When? She pushed ahead, not really wanting to know but incredibly curious at the same time.

Umwell Dawson racked his brains, leaning back in his chair, Jen, Amy Whose Amy? Joeys brow wrinkled. Never mind, Dawson chuckled. But, remember when you were studying for midterms? Youre first year? And everyone kept bugging you? And I came in with coffee and asked if you liked my shoes?

Joeys face went blank, and then she nodded slowly. Yes Amy fits in there. Joey cocked her head. Hmm. Thats why you were wearing the same clothes. Ew. Your sex clothes. Dawson opened his mouth to retort but Joey interrupted, Wellgo on.

Um, two girls that summer, he looked ashamed and Joey was surprised, but lots of wine and too many years meant she wasnt angry. Hey, it wasnt like she had been faithful to their kiss either. Natasha? Joey questioned. Dawson nodded. Yup. And thenyou. Number four. You win for most amount of times I had sex in 24 hours, he added. Joey laughed, but her mind was racing. God. She had been fourth to get to the Holy Grail? Joey sighed, not sure she wanted to hear this. Did you know I got arrested for almost having sex with Natasha on a car at that No Doubt concert.

Joeys jaw dropped. It had only been two minutes but she was finding out a lot more about Dawson Leery then she ever had before. Then the summer you were in Paris, umAnnaNikkiand Dawson paused, to play with the Leerys Fresh Fish placemat, uh, Audrey. WHAT? Several tables stopped mid-conversation to look, including Mary who had been watching the two wearily for a while now. Joey and Dawson put their faces closer together, Joey breathless with this shocking piece of information, Dawson shameful. How? Joey hissed. How? Dawsons brow wrinkled. Well its quite technical he smiled, thinking about it. God, it was eons ago. You know what I mean. But dont, I beg you, DONT go into detail.

Dawson rolled his eyes. We were drunk. It was at a party in Malibu. The usual. It was on the beach. I dont remember much except she is quite the acrobatic one he added just to see Joeys face change from mildly fascinated to disgusted.

Daw-son, Joey warned him, covering her eyes. Oh my god. I cant believe you slept with Audrey. It was years ago, Dawson dismissed it. It was a comfort fuck. What comfort?

I was missing you.

Joey pursed her lips. I see. And then Joey was now keen to move on, with a plan to call Audrey the next day and to rid the disturbing image of Dawson and Audreyohjeez. Did Audrey and all these other girls know and see what Joey had known and seen? Had he kissed and nibbled and laughed and thrusted the same way he had with her? The thought wasprovoking.

And then Christy when I came back here for a few nights before I went to Europethen Christine Dawson was glad he could remember between the two. Joey was shaking her head in disbelief.

MirabellaEnglish aristocrat, ice-queen, though she didnt fuck like one. It was strange hearing fuck coming out of Dawsons mouth, he generally had this gentle, husky, throaty voice and when he said fuck it transcended his tone. But at the same time it was a turn on for Joey, who shifted in her chair.

He rattled off two other names, then said with a grimace, Michellethirteen. Who was number fourteen? Joey asked incredulously. Lila. When I found out Michelle was sleeping with that Frenchman I reacted by going out and screwing her best friend. He frowned. Arent I justthe best? Hmm. Joey couldnt believe it Dawson would never do that. Michelle must have really hurt him.

The candlelight was dying, they had really been talking for a long time. The last light flickered on his handsome face and Joey felt strange, naked yearnings stirring up inside her.

Okay. Dawson stretched his arms above him and yawned, I think its time we hit the sack. Joey smirked as he said hurriedly, I mean. Its time I hit the sack, and you hit the sack, in separatesacks. Are you sure? Joey said jokingly, All this talk about sex has surely made you horny? You are a tease. Dawson reprimanded. Feeling a bit woozy, Joey finished the rest of her wine and held her hand out for him to help her up.

****

They walked the two miles to the Potter B & B, Dawson supporting Joey slightly as theywell, shechattered on, this time about Pacey, in particular, how they reunited.

I was so vulnerable. And he washe showed interest. He kissed me. Joey finished up saying, with a sigh akin to tiredness and nostalgia. So Dawson racked his brains. So if I had kissed you, would things be different? Wait a minute, didnt I already do that? He chuckled.

Stop it. Joey said seriously, as a lot of blood rushed to her head and she started to feel dizzy.

How about now? they stopped, to take in the front entrance of the Potter residence.

Now? Joey repeated dumbly, convinced he was joking around.

She almost fainted when she realized he had bent his head and was inches from her mouth. His thumb grazed her top lip, sending a shiver down her spine. What are you doing? Joey asked wryly, trying to giggle, but her heart was thumping too loudly, and she stared into his darkened eyes. Seeing what will happen, Dawson replied simply, and he pressed his hot mouth on hers, and for a moment, they were lost.

They jumped apart, however, when there was a loud rustle in the bushes and an exclamationJoey!

Pacey lurched out onto the lawn, looking slightly disgruntled, and reeking of alcohol. What are you doing here? Joey exclaimed, finding herself extremely annoyed by his appearance.

Im here to see you, obviously, Pacey replied, trying to look dignified. He then noticed Dawson. Dawsondude Paceys eyes widened. I havent seen you for years. You lookdifferent. Hi Pacey, Dawson managed to smile, You look different too. You alright? Not really. I walked here and some guy threw a beer bottle at my head from a moving car, Pacey rubbed his neck. Hows Mark? he thought to ask.

Dawson was surprised Pacey remembered. Hesgood.

Good, Pacey murmured.

He then focused on Joey, who was starting to wobble, the alcohol and the pressure of two ex-boyfriends was starting to get to her. Pacey took her arms and smiled briefly at Dawson, Ill take her from here. Dawson hesitated, and looked down at Joey who was gazing up at Dawson adoringly.

Night Joey. Youre leaving? Yup. He kissed her cheek, and then shook Paceys hand. Its good to see you go again. He said as warmly as he could.

But Joey stared after Dawson as he left hastily, and then she glared at Pacey. Why are you here? she hiccupped. He laughed, Youre drunk too I take it. We broke up. Joey reminded him. Im going to get you back. Pacey said seriously.

****

The next morning, Joey woke up next to Pacey, terribly ashamed and confused. They had had sex. Not that she could remember that muchthough what she could remember had Joey covering her eyes and reeling in shock. She remembered him on top of her, pumping away, and all she could think about was Dawson, wishing that it was him on top of her, his mouth, his neck, his arms, whispering in her ear.

It was Dawson she thought about the entire five minutes Pacey was on top of her in her drunken stupor. Okay, so she hadnt said no to Pacey. But Dawson wasnt there and she was so aroused from talking to him and Pacey was warm but god, afterwards, she realized what a messy mistake it had been.

Now Pacey was asleep, snoring lightly. He would have a killer hangover later. She already had one.

Oh fuck, fuck, fuck. Joey didnt need another five years to analyze this feeling. She was in love with Dawson. Completely, undeniably in love. She had once enjoyed sex with Paceyshe had once loved him. It wasnt like she fantasized about Dawson during sex every day of the week!

It had been exactly two weeks since he had stepped off that plane and once again, turned her world upside down.

Joey held her head as if to keep it together, and slipped out of bed to take a shower.

****

Pacey came into the kitchen at noon, probably waiting until Bessie and Alex had gone off shopping for the day. Joey was making Bessies bed and other domestic chores, feeling guilty afterwell, last night. She hoped they hadnt made too much noise. (She hoped He hadnt)

She was due to leave at 4pm. Bessie hadnt said anything to her, already knowing about Pacey and the whole situation, so she had just given Joey a long, hard look. As if Joey needed it!

Hi.

Joey looked up from where she was piling magazines. He was stationed by the table, sallow eyed and sleepy, but still cute, loveable Pace. If Only she felt more for him now than fuzzy bunny angry drunken feelings.

She didnt say anything for a moment. ThenMorning. Yeah its certainly not good he mumbled.

Joey pointed to the coffee pot. He poured himself some and sat down with a gruff sigh. We need to talk, dont we?

Joey got up slowly, thinking he could read her mind.

It is over, Joey stated with emphasis, as if repeating herself from last night. She was moved to see Pacey nod in resignation. I know. Last nightyouwere pretty preoccupied during the sex. He grimaced. And I pretty much got the hint when you called out Dawsons name. God, talk about the worst sex weve ever had, and that sucks because itll be the last time.

Joey was so shocked she didnt know what to say. She had called out Dawsons name? Why couldnt she remember that??

That had *never* happened before! Although she had heard plenty of stories. Oh fuck! Was Pacey pissed? Pacey was rubbing his eyes. Maybe he was too hung over. She didnt want to argue, she didnt feel like crying today.

Did we use a condom? she asked quickly, as a thought came to mindshe wasnt on the pill, she had neglected taking it because she had been pretty much celibate since they had parted. Pacey stopped rubbing his eyes.

****

The train left for New York at 4:30pm, so Joey only had an hour to say goodbye. She had spent lunch with Bessie, Alex and a horribly hungover Pacey (who she had wanted to murder until she found the condom wrapper in the trash) and now she desperately wanted to see Dawson. She wondered if being around him would feel different now that she knew she was in love with him.

Would he be able to tell? Bessie had. Wipe that moon-eyed look off your face before you go over there or you will embarrass yourself, she had said with a laugh as Joey zipped up her duffel.

What are you talking about? Joey had retorted. Youre in love with him. Youre crazy about him and his son. Just admit it. Bessie had said a matter a factly in that annoying I-know-everything voice. Joeys cheeks flamed as she lifted her bag off the bed and dumped it by the door ready to pick up.

Hello? she called, entering the housethe door was open. Hello Joey, Gale said warmly, coming out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron. Come inside, Im making dinner.

Now? Gale laughed, It takes a lot of time to prepare. She half-hugged Joey before resuming to making her quiche.

Joey wandered into the kitchen, and was happy to see Mark lounging on the kitchen bench, clumsily holding a wooden spoon. Lily, in an identical apron (but smaller) to her mothers was trying to teach him to lick it. He kept grinning up at her, bouncing excitedly, his chubby arms flailing. Joeys heart melted at the sight of him and she swept over to plant a big kiss on his head.

For the first time ever she hated he was Michelles child and not hers.

Hes a big ball of cuddles today, Lily announced, wrinkling her little nose.

Wheres his daddy? Joey asked tactfully, smoothing Marks blond curls away from his forehead. Fixing Lilys boat. It has a leak, Gale said with a long sigh, Its about to fall to pieces. Over twenty years old it is. Not safealthough Lily can swim like a fish. A mermaid, Lily corrected her mother.

Joey chuckled and played with Marks hands, gaining his rapt attention, as she played peek-a-boo with him. Time to move him, Gale announced, smoothing a rolling pin over dough which inched towards him on the table, and Joey picked him up, patting his bottom. Youre getting heavier, she oofed.

Hey mom where do you keep the hammer Dawson stopped when he saw Joey and he froze in the doorway, his eyebrows raised. He then relaxed some, and his mouth turned up when he saw his son in Joeys arms, reaching for his daddy over her shoulder.

Joey, what are you doing here? he looked genuinely surprised.

Dawson looked incredible for someone with a supposed hang over. Orjust incredible full stop, in acid washed jeans and a navy cotton shirt with rolled up sleeves. Joey felt her hands getting clammy when she though about what was *under* those clothes.

UmImleaving, remember? Joey said breathlessly, not noticing when Mark reached up and tried to chew on strands of her hair.

I thought you left this morning.

Nope4pm train. Awkward silence. Gale tactfully cleared her throat.

The hammer is in the bottom shelf in the shed.

Dawson nodded and indicated with his head for Joey to follow. Joey handed Mark to Lily and Mark started to whimper, his little arms stretching towards Joey who looked at Dawson worriedly. Hell be okay, Gale reassured the two, lifting him out of Lilys unstable arms and rocking him slightly.

He wanted you, Dawson said in amused amazement as they walked out into the backyard. Hes taken to you. Thats amazing. He hates people, generally. I guess you are kind of a similar build toMichelle, though tallerthere must be something about you. He grinned.

I just have some baby experience, Joey shrugged, wiping her palms on her jeans, willing herself not to look at his face *or* his ass. Especially not his ass. Dawson bent down to retrieve the hammer in the shed and Joey groaned inwardly, turning around and focusing on the creek.

So. Dawson played with the hammer handle as he and Joey stood a little apart, eyes flickering. Did you and Paceycatch up? Joey swallowed. You could say that.

Dawson bowed his head a little.

Did you and Paceydid he spend the night? Joey bit her bottom lip hard. She couldnt lie. Yes she admitted, But We were very drunk, she added wryly.

Well one day learn nothing good happens from too much alcoholor does it? Dawson murmured. His eyes flicked up her neck and then settled on her eyes. In the mid-afternoon pale blankness of a cloudy day, his eyes looked incredibly blueindigo, and for the first time in a long time, Joey saw jealousy.

For some reason this made her feel betterand braver. Pacey and I are over, Joey said slowly, playing with the buttons on her white shirt, not noticing when Dawson looked down at her actions. For real? he asked, unconsciously stepping closer to her.

Yes. Joey affirmed, lifting her chin to look directly at him. Butwhy should you care? she asked half accusingly, half gently, desperately wanting to know what he thought of her. It had been almost three years since she and Pacey had gotten together. Three years since Dawson had left for Europe and fallen for Michelle.

I dont know, he admitted huskily, bending his head so it was close to hers. Maybe I She waited anxiously. Maybe I like you. So those four words were hardly spectacular. He wasnt promising a sailing trip to Key West or declaring some cute-Jerry Maguire quote or even repeating one of his speeches. But they were the most exciting four words Joey had ever heard.

AndI could fight for you but that always got me nowhere, so Ibacked off. Dawson continued as Joey glowed.

You like me? she just repeated slyly. Dawson flexed his jaw and turned his face to the side, studying her with a small smile on his face.

Maybe Like me as in, you dont hate me, or like me as in common Kindergarten crush, or like me as in you want to sleep with me?

Stop. Dawson raked a hand through his hair, grinning. I like you as inI like you. But I would very much like to sleep with you. He added earnestly, and Joey truly thought she would faint.

But now I need to know do *you* like me? You idiot, Joey gently poked his chest. I *love* you. I dont want you to back off. Weve only been together two weeks but I feel surer about my feelings for you than my feelings for Bessie. She stopped, waiting with baited breathhad she gone too far?

But Dawson looked positively charmed, as if she had just handed him solid gold. When did you know? When did things change for you? he asked inquisitively, placing his strong hands on her waist. Joey felt her abdomen buzz deliciously and her legs quiver. He smelt so goodspicy, warm aftershave.

They must have changed the moment you got off that plane, Joey said ruefully, sliding her hands up his arms and onto his neck. But it hit me last nightafter bad sex with Pacey, sex where all I could think about was youthatIwas.

Okay. Dawson chuckled, I didnt expect to hear the words sex, Pacey and my name in the same sentence

Joey closed her eyes briefly, and then opened them to see Dawson gazing down at her. Wellwhat about you? Joey asked. When did things change for you? I thought youwere still in love with Michelle or something.

I learnt long ago you cant hold onto things that go to shit, he said simply. And to reach for things that have hope. You have been amazing. And I dont think Ive ever really *fallen* out of love with you. He touched her chin. But I have to say I truly started thinking about it at the carnival. When we were on that ridethe roller coaster. And I didnt even notice how fast it went or how high it was because I was sitting next to you.

Enough talking, Joey said firmly, reaching up to hold his face. Lets kiss. Agreed, Dawsons eyes flashed as he leaned down, one hand on the back of her head, to take her mouth in his in a decidedly passionate kiss for a kiss taking place in full view of the neighbors in broad daylight.

Dawson! Joey! DinEwww! Lily shrieked in disgust as she saw her brother and Joey kissing on the lawn. They broke apart, amused, to see Lily run as fast as she could back into the house shrieking, Mom theyre *kissing*! Covering her mouth and laughing, Joey attempted to shake off deliriously erotic thoughts and feelings in preparation for a wholesome entrance back into the Leery house.

So when will you be back in Capeside? Dawson asked, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her tight up to his chest. Two weeks. At the thought of that, Joey shuddered. Dawson chuckled, How long have you had off? A month And you wont get fired?

No way. Not if its a family emergencythough Bessie insists it isnt I got the firm two very important projectsCathy wouldnt fire me. But I am needed she sighed in annoyance, I dont want to go. His stubble brushed against her smooth cheek as he nuzzled her neck, and Joey murmured, I really dont want to go she reached down to rub her hand over his crotch, and then behind to his butt. She had been wanting to do that all day.

Now I dont want to let you go, Dawson said in response, eagerly growing more excited from her touch. One more breathless look, then Joey fumbled for her cell phone and speed-dialed Cathy. Cathy? Yes, its Joey Potter herelookI apologize profusely but my sister has just become sicker today and I might not be able to make it until Monday

Like a ghost don't need a key
Your best friend I've come to be
Please don't think of getting up for me
You don't even need to speak
When I've been here for just one day
You'll already miss me if I go away
So close the blinds and shut the door
You won't need other friends anymore

Dinner, although it was lovely, was almost excruciating for Joey, who had to watch as Dawson ate, drank, laughed, talked and sent her intense looks over the dinner table without pouncing on him in front of the childrenand Gale, who had been giving the two of them knowing looks. She was obviously thrilled her son had found love with someone a bit morestable. A bit, anyway. Every now and then Dawsons hand would deliberately brush against her knee, or his fingers would brush against hers as he passed her plates.

After dinner, Dawson carried his dozing son up to his bedroom, and Joey helped Gale clear up plates, amused but a tiny bit embarrassed by Gales humming and winks and sighs. Luckily, Gale didnt try to ask anything.

Why did you kiss my brother? Lily asked, though, flat-out when Joey was leading her up to her bedroom after Lily demanded she put her to bed. Joey racked her brainswhat do you say to an eight year old about kissing?

Because we love each other, she finally said clearly, following Lily into her now yellow and purple room, hoping she was giving Lily the truth as well as a moral lesson. But youve never kissed before, Lily pointed out, pulling her blanket out of the bed and hopping in.

No, well, we did but Are you going to have a baby? Like Mark? Lily asked hopefully, settling back, the blanket up to her chin. But can it be a girl?

I dont know Lily, well see, Joey said, laughing incredulously, wondering where Lily learnt that kissing led to babies. She couldnt think that far ahead yet, she and Dawson hadnt even gone up to third base.

Night honey, Joey leaned down to kiss lilys forehead, and Lily smiled up at her, Even if you dont have a baby, I still like you, Joey. I know. Joey smoothed her thick, golden hair, thinking how pretty Lily was going to grow up to be.

She flicked the bedroom light off and gently shut the door behind her, just as Dawson exited his room, and they were face-to-face in the hallway.

Joey knew nothing could happen tonight---it wasnt time, and there was nowhere appropriate for it, but being near him was intoxicating. She played with her hair, determined to get her mind of sex, and she smiled casually, Is Mark asleep?

Yup. Dawson also seemed preoccupied, he had crossed his arms as if he didnt trust them, and was looking at a spot over her shoulder, before flickering his eyesfinallyto her face. I should probably go home, Joey said slightly nervously as he stepped closer to her, until her back was against the smoothness of the hallway wall, and his hand was conspicuously sliding from her hip to her

Dawson! Joey hissed, laughing at the same time, reluctantly lifting his hand off her breast. Were two feet from your son, one foot from your sister and five feet from your mother. No. Way.

This isnt good, Dawson said, taking in a raggedy breath, closing his eyes for a moment. Ill be downstairs Joey murmured, letting her mouth and tongue explore the underside of his ear for a quick, lust-filled moment, and then she bounded down the stairs, leaving Dawson bewildered and with a painful erection.

After stepping into the bathroom to compose himself, he joined Joey downstairs, on the porch with a glass of wine Gale had given her. Im going to bed, darlings, she said with a wide smile, handing Dawson a glass.

Your mom is too much, Joey said playfully as Dawson wrapped his arms around Joey from behind and they both gazed out to the creek.

What are you thinking about? Dawson murmured after a moment, softly kissing her neck. Us. Sex she blushed, shuddering as he stroked her neck and back, feeling her thin muscles through the material of her shirt.

This is sonice. But strange, Joey pointed out. We never *knew* we would have sex before. It always just *happened* before. You mean, it happened just *once* before, Dawson said. Hmmm. Joey closed her eyes as he nibbled her ear. The anticipation is supposed to be the best part of sex she whispered.

What about the end? When you come? Dawson said gravelly, and Joey thought she would, just from hearing him say it mixed with the reaction of him unbuttoning her shirt, kissing her neck and blowing softy in her ear. It was sensory overdrive.

Thats good toobut sometimes the build upthe waitingthe knowingcan be as much of a turn on, she whispered, craning her head back to look him in his eyes. Thats true, Dawson agreed. Especially in the movies,

Joey was about to laugh with disbelief that he had managed to slip in a movie euphemism in the middle of their foreplay (or whatever it was) when there was a loud cry from Dawsons bedroomMark. Dawson immediately stiffened and sent Joey an apologizing look before starting indoors.

Dawson Joey called after him, and he turned. I better go. Now, Joey said firmly, still smiling.

Can I walk you home when I get Mark off to bed? Dawson asked, It was tempting, but I think Ill be fine. I have the truck, Bessie will want it back. Joey sighed.

Dawson looked a little disappointed, so Joey reached for his hand.

Rememberwaiting is the best part, she said, standing on tiptoes to kiss him softly, seductively, on the side of his mouth.

Dawson watched her leave with amazement.

****

If you're cold I'll keep you warm
If you're low just hold on
Cause I will be your safety
Oh don't leave home

This is nice, Joey said, impressed, putting her small bag down on the large double bed, and putting her hands on her hips, looking around the bright and airy Inn room.

They were in Boston for the weekend, at Dawsons suggestion, after Joey had gotten the thumbs up from Bessie and had given Cathy a regretful call full of promises.

She walked over to the windows, which overlooked the Boston common park.

Its the honeymoon suite, Dawson said wryly, closing the door behind the bellboy, and dropping his duffel bag on the floor.

So lets pretend were married or we wont get the discount. I dont think that will be too much of a problem, Joey grinned, turning around to look at him.

Did you know I lost my virginity in a hotel room? Dawson said sneakily, testing the bed, patting it seeing how firm it was.

Really? Joeys grin widened. So did I. Dawson chuckled as she sashayed over to him and settled in his lap. Is the bed comfortable? she murmured into his neck, as he slid his hands down to squeeze her butt.

Oh yeah, he said throatily, reaching for the hem of her stretchy black knit sweater. Wait, Dawson, lets save that for later, Joey chided him gently, placing a cool hand on his chest, where his heart was beating furiously.

Sorry, Dawson apologized, looking up into her eyes. Hormonesraging Dawson youre twenty-six you dont have teenage boy hormones anymore, Joey teased him, getting off his lap and going over to her bag to find a change of clothes. You have a point, but remember Im a teenager at heart, Dawson leaned back on the bed with his elbows.

Here. Joey tossed a white shirt and jeans at Dawson, Get dressed, were going out. Already picking out my clothes, I see, Dawson joked, yanking his shirt up and over his head. Joey turned away, her cheeks pink, in case *her* hormones got the better of her, but not before having a good look at his newly developed pectorals and muscles. She wondered what it would be like to press her breasts against him, now that his body had changed even more than it already had in college.

She peeled off her own shirt, feeling Dawsons eyes on her naked back, comfortable and loving they were changing in front of reach other. They hadnt even done that the first time they had sex, the light of day casting modesty upon them, Joey had rushed into the bathroom, her dressing gown around her, while he had changed in the room.

Dawson too seemed to think the same thing she was, he smiled lovingly at her as he buttoned up his new jeans and then finished buttoning up his shirt. He stood back and appreciated from afar her curves as she slowly and deliberately pulled on her black skirt and a purple sweatshirt over a matching chocolate lace bra and panties set. You look beautiful, Dawson said admiringly, shrugging on his coat and grabbing his wallet, as Joey slipped on her boots. So do youI mean, you lookhandsome, Joey giggled, and they headed towards the door. On the way out, Joey hoped she would hold up until that evening. The anticipation was a killer.

****

And I arrived when you were weak
I'll make you weaker, weaker still
Now all your love you give to me
When your heart is all I need

Come on Joey dragged Dawson by his jacket sleeve into the fancy department store off Beacon, and he groaned, I hate shopping. So how come you have such nice clothes? Joey asked incredulously.

I dont, I just go simple, Dawson explained as they walked idly into the womens fashion section. And if I like something I buy like, five of it. Like these jeans. They dont squash my dick, he grinned and Joey rolled her eyes, Dawson.

Right excuse me. He let Joey drag him around as she picked up items on hangers. Now that I actually have some money its nice to go and buy clothes for myselfI used to come in here as a college student and stare and try on things, Joey said ruefully, Although if I dont go back to work by next Thursday I wont have a joband no money. Hmmm that sucks, Dawson said simply, and Joey laughed, Dawson, youre losing your touch. I know, he grabbed her hand and they sailed around the store, happy to be just together doing normal domestic things.

Oh, now, this kind of shopping I dont mind, Dawson said as they walked past the lingerie section on the second floor. Ill bet, Joey murmured as he picked up a black thong and nodded appreciatively. What about this one? he picked up another black silky thing and Joey laughed ludicrously,

Dawson my grade school scrunchies had more material. Typically, Dawsons eyes lit right up as he surveyed the lingerie, but Joey went along with it anyway---hey, it was his Gold Amex credit card, not hers.

They came out of the department store an hour later, Joey holding an elegant paper bag, giggling, holding Dawsons hand as he led her up the street to find something to eat, ravenous after an energetic trying-on of certain outfits in the dressing rooms, and a hefty lecture from the saleswoman. Dawson had narrowly missed out on seeing Joey in her underwear, which he was disappointed about.

How about Cheers? he suggested and she nudged his chest, so he suggested, Hells kitchen? I dont think so.

They settled on an Italian place by the water that Joey knew about, a very romantic intimate restaurant. It was small, so Joey wasnt prepared to see the face of an ex-boyfriend at the next table. Christopher was holding the hand of a pretty blonde, whispering things in her ear, and Joey hoped he didnt see her. She bent her head close to Dawsons, smelling his aftershave, and giggled as he made some jokes about the waiters, as if to relax her. They shared a pizza and a bottle of burgundy, and eventually Dawson caught on to Joeys nervousness. Are you okay? he asked gently, rubbing her knee. Joey smiled and patted his cheek, You think Im nervous about tonight? Maybe.

My ex-fiance is at the next table. She explained in a whisper. Shit. Dawson tried to crane his neck but Joey grabbed his hand, Dont. Hey Im sizing up my competition Was he better in bed than me? he added, half-jokingly. I thought Pacey was your competition, and I cant remember, Joey added, poking her tongue out. Hmmm. They kissed, slowly, for a few long, delicious moments, and his hand traveled up her thigh. Joey shivered, and all thoughts of Christopher left her as Dawson softly left butterfly kisses on her neck, murmuring, I love this perfume you wearwhat is it? Chanel.

I have no idea what that is. She giggled and he kissed her again, and she tasted blissful garlic and wine and him, and she broke away from him breathlessly, to brush some hair behind his ears. Im wild about you. Joey whispered.

Yeah Im pretty wild about you too, he replied, kissing her hand, and as he did, Joey lifted her eyes and Christopher saw her. He stared for a moment, and then he smiled, seeing her situation, and raised his wine glass. She smiled back at him, warmly, not believing it had been nearly four years since she had dumped him for Pacey, and now she was here with Dawson, already in the early stages of sexual intercourse.

Lets go, Dawson was saying, not even asking for the bill, he left a fifty (a generous twenty-five dollar tip) and stood up, sliding out her chair and guiding her out of the restaurant.

****

Joey laughed to herself as she slipped into the silky, lacy black panties and bra Dawson had bought her, still thinking over the contents of the past half an hour.

They had barely made it into the bedroom when they were on the couch, he had immediately taken her sweatshirt off, she had struggled with his jacketthey had knocked over a vaseher boots, his shoes, his jeans, his shirt was unbuttoned, sighing, kissing, and then moaning when he took her nipples in his mouth and she reached into his pants toand then suddenly Joey realized, in the heat of passion, and the position of her holding his cock, that she wasnt on the pill, so she had whispered, Condom? he had frozen. Then he had cursed, Shit. I meant to buy some.

Hastily he had grabbed his jacket and wallet, and kissed her hard before calling, Ill be back in ten minutes. MINUTES.

It reminded her of being a teenager again, on the condom run. In the dorm room they had borrowed from a stash in Audreys drawer when Dawsons two obligatory wallet condoms had been used upone accidentally filled when Joey had given him a hand job that lasted a bit too long, the next one of course, for the first time they made love. Thinking about it turned her on even more. She wanted him inside her, now. At least, though, she could prepare. Fluffing up her hair in the mirror, Joey practiced pouting, but laughed at herselfhow ridiculous. She put on a tiny bit of Chanel Allurethe perfume he likedbehind her ears, between her breasts and on her wrists, and then she went to turn down the sheets and lower the heating systemtheyd be hot enough as it was. She reached up above the headboard to dim the lights a little.

Feeling excited after a few more sips of wine, she slipped into the bed and waited. Godthey were really going to have sex! After, what, eight years? She hadnt even thought about having sex with him until a few weeks ago. And now it was all she wanted. Butwould she compare to his other lovers? Joey bit her lip. She knew he loved her, butwas she experienced enough? Who cares anyway, she reprimanded herself. It was making love, not a test. The door clicked open and Joey sat up slightly, smiling.

Jo? In here. He walked into the bedroom and gazed at her in bed. Wow. Was all he said.

Joey blushed and lay down. Im cold, Dawson, get in here. He hurriedly shrugged off his jacket, shoes and shirt, and then he unbuttoned his jeans and slid onto the bed, tossing a box to the side. I got ribbed. It was all they had. I think well manage. Joey slid her hands up his chest and onto his shoulders, and brought him down to her. He rolled down the sheet and slid inside, and kneeling, he gently pulled her up so she was sitting, facing him. Her cheeks were flushed as she nervously slid his jeans down over his hips. Hmmm, money well spent, he murmured into her ear as he unhooked her bra. His hand crept up to her side, and when he cupped her breast, rolling his thumb over her taut nipple, she whimpered. Oh yeah, Joey said, her voice a bit wobbly, $60 on something I wore for five minutes.

It was worth it, Dawson tilted her chin to kiss her softly, before bending his head to kiss her breasts with the tender kisses she so loved. He cupped and nuzzled them as Joey reached down to work his boxers off. She glanced down, allowing herself for the first time to truly look at him, and she felt a sense of triumph at the pleasure she was obviously bringing him. He was rock hard, proudly angling up towards his stomach. Youre driving me crazy, Dawson said throatily as she stroked him lightly.

Sorry.

No its a good crazy. He lay her down a little so he could lift her legs and slowly take her panties off. There goes forty dollars, he joked. Joey giggled and thanked god shed had a bikini wax the week before. Dawson didnt seem to even care, though, that wasnt his style. Instead he just threw off the sheet to take a better look at her naked, and his appraisal didnt even make her uncomfortable like it sometimes could.

His large hand splayed over her stomach, his fingers tantalizingly close. Joey urged him to move closer, smiling, relaxing her head on the fluffy pillow behind her and admiring Dawsons back muscles as he leaned over her. She continued to play with him below, but only lightly. She stopped when he lowered his face between her thighs, and did a bone-shrieking amazing thing he must have picked up in Europe, Joey decided, completely out of breath some moments later, her legs relaxed, her heart jumpy, as Dawson fiddled with the Trojan packet.

Sheet on or off? he asked, kneeling on the bed, raring to go. Off. Its too binding otherwise, Joey replied, not quite believing she could still talk. He knelt between her thighs, drawing her knees up to rest on his hips. Her head fell back as she realized his intention, and she closed her eyes.

Jo she opened her eyes. Yes? she caressed his face. I haventdone this with someone I loved for a long time, he admitted softly. Oh Dawson, Joey sighed, kissing him passionately as he started to thrust. They kissed urgently as they made love, not even noticing when the bed started to thump against the wall.

Tell me if Im toohard on, oh, you, he whispered, his eyes closed in complete pleasure, his head bent over.

You can never be too hard, she said hoarsely, one of her hands grabbing the sheets, the other grabbing his back for leverage as the sex got more heated. She lifted her chin to suck at his throat and neck, and as beads of sweat moved silently down Dawsons forehead, she kissed each one away. His moans became louder and soon turned into cries, and she followed with her own delirious, uncontrollable high-pitched cries which the next-door hotel room must have heard, as she felt like she would literally explode from the glorious pleasure. After his intense orgasm, Dawson rested, sated, in Joeys arms, a lazy smile on his face.

Joey had an almost identical expression. Do you want a cigarette? she asked jokingly.

I think I need one. Youll never guess who I ran into while buying condoms at the store. Who? Joey asked, caressing his hair.

Pacey.

What? Pacey is in Boston? Joey gasped, turning her head to look at him. Yup. Dawson confirmed, still stroking her arm. How did you

Well I went to that 24 hour store some blocks away, and I was in the condom aisle and there he was. Buying condoms?

No, snacks or something. I didnt notice. I kind of threw the condoms behind a packet of chips, pretended I was buying coke and got the hell out of there. Oh thats why you took a long time. Despite herself, she giggled. I had to buy them in a gas station, thus the eighties-style ribbed.

As long as they werent made in the eighties, Joey said firmly, kissing his forehead. They werent, I checked, Dawson retorted ruefully, putting his hand on her stomach tenderly. WellI could sit here and wonder what he was doing in Boston, Joey mused, Or I could fuck your brains out. Hmmm. Dawson pretended to decide. You know what? Thats a hard one. It sure is. Smiling salaciously, she slid onto him.

****

That wasamazing, Dawson panted, sitting up so he could pick the tangled sheets and blankets

off the floor and put them over the two of them. Despite being overheated, the room was getting cold. His hair was ruffled, his skin was tinged pink and he was breathing hardJoey loved every minute of it. She lay on the bed, exhausted, trailing her hand up and down his smooth back. You were incredible, he murmured, lying down with her, cupping her face and kissing her. You were I had no idea

Joey raised her eyebrows. No idea? she snuggled against him. We did make love before, Dawson. Not like this. He ran his fingers through her tousled hair. How was I different then? she asked. Iuhwell, you wereI mean, it wasjust different.

Joey giggled. Wasnt I like totally horny? Dawson chuckled, No that was me. Oh please. She playfully pushed his shoulder. I think the first timewe were experimenting. Dawson said softly, entwining his legs with her smooth ones, Tastingand we were surprised but we loved how well our bodies worked together, and we were happy. It was happy sex,

Joey was taken aback by his truthful responsehe was right. She grazed her nails down his chest softly and listened. This time it was about the passionthe wantthe needwe didnt care about who had an orgasm first, we just cared we were together. No wonder youre a writer, Joey sighed, kissing his cheek. He smiled, And been though Iveum, had my fair share of sexual experience Joey snorted.

Tonight, well he shook his head in disbelief. You do things to my mind and my body no other woman can. Joey melted. And they broke the record for most amounts of times theyd had sex in a two-hour period.

****

Joey? Dawson said softly. Joey, Jo, babe, its time to get up. Mmm, she grumbled, her face snuggled against what she thought was Dawson. When she opened one eye she saw it was a pillow, and Dawson was up, dressed in his boxer shorts. She sneaked a look at the clock7am. Dawson! she exclaimed (as loudly as she could having just woken up) Its seven am.

We have to make the nine oclock train. He smoothed her hair, his hand going over her head down her neck and then onto the curve of her naked spine. Why? she grumbled, sitting up weakly, her hair practically a birds nest over her eyes. She yanked it back to look him in the eyes. Mom called. She said I need to get homeit wasnt serious, it was a surprise or something and Mark wanted me back, Dawson shrugged. Oh, okay. Joey wondered what it was. She struggled to sit up. Ill go have a cold shower, she said groggily. She managed to smile as he gazed at her.

What? You look beautiful even when youre bed-lagged. Well if I was up all night making love, yeah Id look better than if I was up all night studying, she said slyly.

They kissed, quickly. She got out of bed, the sheet wrapped around her like a Grecian princess, and she walked into the bathroom. Closing her eyes under the semi-warm spray, Joey relaxed, her body stillsore. She had forgotten how sore passionate, mad, wild sex could make you. And he just kept on going. There was a rustle behind her, and she assumed he was brushing his teeth or shaving. But then he stepped into the shower and she giggled. Hm-hm, Dawson, Joey said wickedly, feeling his groin press up against her back in the shower, What are you doing here?

What do you think? Im assisting your showering. He replied innocently, reaching for the soap and sliding it over her stomach. I think Ill be fine, Joey laughed, Honestly. She moaned when he started to kiss her neck, and the soap stopped at her belly but his hand went lower. Hmmmm you know what? Joey said breathlessly, lifting her chin up to give him better access.

What?

I liked waking up next to you.

Me too.

I she ducked her head. Im hoping we can do it more often. You know, likemak??4?? e it more permanent.

He knew what she was saying, and he liked it. He liked it a lot. I think thats a great idea, he said huskily.

They arrived back in Capeside by 11am, knowing, sexy smiles on their faces as they walked up the front lawn, holding hands. Dawson walked quickly, leading Joey, anxious to see Mark.

Mom? he called, as they entered the house. He stole a kiss from Joey and she kissed his neck, just before Gale hurried into the front hall. Dawson.

She lookedscared. Mom? Dawson stepped forward. What is it?

You better go into the living room. She didnt look at Joey, already knowing the dreamy-Im-in-love look she had and how it would slide off her face soon enough.

Dawson marched into the living room and Joey followed, slowly.

A petite woman with blond curls pinned up over an aqua blue cashmere sweater was holding Mark, and Joey thought maybe it was a friend of Gales. But Dawson froze. And in the blink of an eye, Joey knew.

Michelle?

Dawson, she said in a light French accent. She turned around so they could see her face. She was very pretty, with almond shaped green eyes and a nice, if nervous, smile. Joey hated her.

What are you doing here? Dawson asked straight away, holding out his arms for his son. Michelle gently deposited Mark into his fathers arms. Im here to see you an Mark of course, she said simply.

I ave news for you. Youre not going to like it. She added with a little sigh.

Huh. Dawson sneered, holding his son close to him. Joey wondered when Michelle would even notice her, but her eyes wouldnt leave Dawson.

Im pregnant, she announced, putting her hand over her slightly swelling belly.

Fantastic, Dawson said flatly, not even looking at Michelle but at Joey, his eyes wide and full of apologies. Joey wanted to tell him he didnt have to apologize, she knew.

Its yours.

Dawson didnt believe Michelles claim. And Joey certainly didntshe had stared at her incredulously.

I was just telling her shes not welcome in my house, Gale interrupted the terrible silence.

Mom. Despite his anger, his shock and his disbelief, Dawson didnt want to kick his ex-girlfriend out just yet, especially seeing she was pregnant, and he wanted answers.

Its okay I deserve that. Michelle said quietly, her gaze finally leaving Dawsons face, and settling on Joeys. Who are you? she asked, not rudely, just curiously.

Im Joey. Joey said hesitantly.

Ah. Michelle says as if she knows exactly who Joey is. I think Ill leave you two alone to talk, Joey said, sounding calmer than she actually felt.

Jo Dawson tried to disagree but Joey was adamant.

You need to talk to her, Dawson, otherwise she paused, and lowered her voice. Theres no hope foryou and me.

Dawson nodded begrudgingly.

Gale picked Mark up with a sniff and took Joeys elbow, leading her out. Once Gale went upstairs to change Marks diaper, Joey wafted towards the semi-closed living room door.

I am four and half months, Michelle was saying loudly, as if they were in the middle of an argument.

Its impossible. We didnt sleep together forages, Dawson argued.

I cannot believe you dont remember Provence Michelle said slowly. When you took me to see my maman?

Dawson was furiously silent after that.

Oui, it was one time, we were drunk, Michelle said angrily, But you got me pregnant. It is your child. Luc-Henry cannot have children. She sat down on the couch heavily, looking extremely upset. For the first time ever, Joey felt mildly sorry for her.

Oh, bullshit. Dawson remained standing. I didnt do this to spite you. I didnt do any of this to spite you. She said tearfully. Oui, Ive made mistakes. Oui, I havefucked up. You knew I wasuhhow do you saytroubled? When you met me and wooed me.

I didnt Dawson said soundly. Who is she? Michelle asked next, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her obviously expensive cashmere.

Joey. Dawson sat down in an armchair adjacent. I know that. I meant, what is she to you?

Joey held her breath. Im in love with her.

Joeys eyes closed.

Michelles head dropped a little. You fall so quickly, she commented archly after a few moments. It took me fifteen years, actually, Dawson said dryly.

I thought Michelles voice was so lovely, she was soelegant and cultured and beautiful, god, how could Dawson prefer her over Michelle? Joey wondered. had a man, Michelle was saying, talking about Pacey.

They broke up. Joeys with me now. Dawson raked a hand through his hair, his trademark anxiousness.

In a week. Michelle said as though it was the most laughable thing shed ever heard. Weirder things have happened.

Joey felt footsteps behind her and she whirled away from the door and quickly went outside.

****

I knew youd be here eventually, Joey said quietly, drifting out onto the porch and putting her hands on the front railing. Dawson stood down on the law, looking up at her. Sohow did it go?

Dawson finds it hard to speak, Joey can tell he doesnt have good news. She braces herself, and goes through her own news in her head, so when she speaks it, it wont be jumbled.

It most probably is my baby, Dawson said regretfully. We didumwell, it was the last time. He looks so ashamed and confused, and Joey just wanted to hug him, to tell him it was okay, but it wasnt, was it?

I thought you hadnt had sex with someone you loved for a long time, she said softly, her eyes burning into his.

I havent, Dawson said strongly. I havent.

Joey looked down at her wrung hands.

Were going to have paternity tests, Dawson continued. Once the baby is born. She has a friend in Rhode Island who has offered to help her, and shes registered in the hospital

He reached up to grasp her hand. I love you, Joey, he said seriously. I love you no matter what happens, and I always will. Last night was the mostamazing experience of my life, after our first time. You are amazing. Im not going to let this get between us.

But you have too. Joey bit her bottom lip. For Mark, Dawson, you have to try again with Mich

No! Dawson exclaimed. Im not going to. Then Ill make it easier for you.

I wont hear of it. He walked up the porch steps and kissed her fiercely. Just wait for me, okay? I have to get back to Mark. He kissed her again, slowly. She nodded numbly, gripping onto his shirt before letting it go and watching him walk away to his jeep.

By tomorrow morning shell be back in New York, with a new life in front of her, so Dawson can get on with his. Joey dissolved into tears on the steps, hunching over and sobbing into her hands so Bessie wont hear.

**Five months later**

It was Dawsons child.

Even before the test results came out a day after the baby was born, Gale grudgingly admitted the boyMitchelllooked just like Dawson had as a baby. He was large9 pounds, with lots of golden curls and huge, blue eyes. Mark looked at his baby brother with trepidation, as did Dawson. What would this child bring? Michelle held her second son lovingly, and Dawson realized with a pang she was more loving, more stable and calmer with Mitchell then she had been with Mark. He suspected that this change in herfrom whatever she went through beforewas for the better. Though not in Marks favor.

She was sweet to Mark but distant, the same way she treated Dawson. Sometimes she would reminisce, about their carefree afternoons in Portofino, Italy, or scootering along the high roads in Corfu in the Greek Islands. Every time she came out with another story of how wonderful their life was, Dawson thought of Joey, his beautiful wife who was working her guts out on a deadline in New York and he ached to be with her.

His two year relationship with Michelle had been a bright spot in his lifeexcluding the third year which took a bashing, but Dawson realized now it had just been about sex, and chemistry they had gotten a kick out of pretending to loathe each other, it made the sex better. Too bad that wore out. She had excited him with her accent and her sultry Kate Hudson-type looks, but now the only thing that excited Dawson was Joey, and his long-standing and meaningful relationship with her.

On her last day at the hospital, the fifth time Dawson went down to visit, she told him something. Mark is your son, she said simply. While Mitchell feels like my sondo you comprende?

Not really. Dawson said truthfully, wondering where the hell she was going with this. I never bonded with Mark. She fondly touched his head. He never felt like my son. He looked so much like you it was as if he wasjust your son. Dawson felt the risings of anger in him.

Add to that I wasgoing through someproblems. And that orrid post-natal depression thing. It didnt mean you had to leave. I could have helped you. Mark could have helped you, Dawson said quietly.

The only person to help me was Luc-Henry, Michelle said firmly. He did and I left him and I ave Mitchell, my angel, and Im going back to Paris to start a new lifeyou can fight me, if you want, but ear me out. Dawson sat down. Go on, he said tiredly.

****

The drive back to New York was incredibly hard. Mark was cheerful, and that made Dawson all the more upset. He hadnt cried for years. Not even when Michelle left her son, but he was on the verge now. He had held his newborn son to him for five minutes, turning his face from Michelle who looked on with an expectant smile. Mitchell had gurgled, his head lolling slightly until Dawson supported his little head the same way he had supported Marks. Mitchell looked up with him through round eyes before starting??4?? to whimper, then cry lustily. Michelle asked for him back. Dawsons hands had trembled as he handed the wriggling baby over to his mother.

You must visit as much as possible. At least twice a yearonce in November, once in April for is birthday. I know you can, you have the money, Michelles thick black eyelashes simpered.

Dawson would have done anything for his son, and being parted from him hurt. And he would almost certainly go to Paris five times a year if he had too. But he knew, deep down, if it was going to work with Joey, if it was going to work with Mark, here in America, he had to let Mitchell go, if for his sake only, and his mothers.

When he found Joey in the living room of their co-op, talking briskly on the phone, he leaned against the wall the stare at her, just basking in her essence. Joey quickly said her goodbyes and walked over to him, curious. What happened? she asked, seeing his face, and reaching up to touch his cheeks.

He wrapped his arms around her and buried his head in her neck.

**Big Sur, eight months later**

Dawson and Joeys lush backyard was filled with people, celebrating Marks second birthday. White oleander and eucalyptus trees dotted the yard, sending out dusty scents in the spring heat.

Joey watched from the porch where she sat with Lily as Jack led a game of treasure hunt, Amy loudly dictating the game, Marks pudgy hand enclosed in hers, as he toddled after his idol. A lot of family and friends had made it over from the east coast, as Marks second birthday coincided with Dawsons first Golden Globe nomination, and his and Joeys first anniversary. Add to that they had just moved into their rented beach house, a beautiful, 19th century wrap-around porch-style house perched on the cliffs with stunning Pacific Ocean views and a gorgeous garden. Joey adored it.

They were renting from a friend of Dawsons for the two to three years they were trialing California. (Dawson planned to finish the project in two years and then move back to New York, Joey was beginning to think California could be longer term) They lived mostly in the Big Sur house but drove down to their smaller house in the Hollywood Hills when Dawson had to work. Joey had been offered a job that allowed her to stay at home, which was to edit a huge novel from a best selling author. Joey felt so inspired on the cliffs she was beginning to think she could write her own. And she was pregnant.

So, it was worth the 3000-mile trip. Even Pacey had made it, coming over with his new girlfriend Andie, his brother Doug, Dougs boyfriend Jack and Jacks daughter Amy.

Joey had invited Michelle, but she was tied up with work and her new husband, Luc Henry. Joey and Michelle spoke on the phone about once a month, discussing Mark and Mitchell and what they were up to. Joey was beginning to get a little attached to Mitchell, which she tried to overrun but it was difficult.

Dawson had recently been in Paris and had bought Mitchell back with him for two months while Michelle and Luc Henry went on their honeymoon to Africa; relieved Michelle didnt come over with her new hubby.

Now, Dawson was carrying Mitchell around like a prized football, showing him off to family and friends, now and then checking back with Joey, who was three months pregnant. He was surrounded by kidsmost of them his own, a fact which amused both his mom and Pacey considerably.

Bessie sought Joey out and found her sitting on the porch swing, overlooking the water, a glass of mineral water in her hand. She was stroking Lilys hair, Lily, who gabbled on about school and boys she hated.

There was a soft, distinctive swelling under her pale blue blouse, and every once in a while Joey would put her hand on it, and smile to herself. Bessie ruffled her kid sisters hair, proudly. She was thinner then she used to be, but healthy, all the cancer out of her system thanks to an early detection and a good years relaxation. Sometimes Bessie joked that Joey had been through more crap that year then she had.

Less than a week after Joey had fled to New York, Dawson had followed her, determined not to let her go. He had made it clear to Michelle he was going to support her and the baby because that was the kind of guy Dawson was, but he was never going to get back together with her. He had knocked on Joeys door at midnight after running four blocks from a traffic jam after hailing a cab from the train station. She had been shocked to see him, and had tried to make him go but he made his caseIm not letting one obstacle get in our way. Not again. Its not worth itnot worth another five years of pain, or you running back to Pacey.

Joey had been stubborn, but after two hours of yelling, (between the both of them), pushing (Joey) quiet reasoning (Dawson) and then a lit flame of desire on the couch when they were sitting too close and she only had on a dressing gown (both of them) she finally broke down.

Especially when he stressed to her the waste of time it would be to give up on them after just one little blimp. Its not little, she had laughed finally, tears collecting in her eyes also. It is to me, he said, kissing her. Too exhausted to even make love and finish what they had attempted to start less than an hour ago, they had just fallen asleep together in her bed, waking up to passion the next morning, however.

They were married a month later, a small wedding in the Leery garden by the creek with a justice of peace and just thirty good friends and family. Lily and Amy were the flower girls; Audrey was the maid of honor and Dawsons closest friend from L.A, Todd, was the best man. Jack pretended there was something in his eye when he teared up looking at Amy toddle down the aisle, grabbing handfuls of rose petals and flinging them on the guests. Mark had watched on his grandmothers lap, oddly quiet and observant. Even Pacey was there, at the back with Andie and Jack, laughing over Amys antics and putting on a brave face for Dawson and Joeys kiss.

For their honeymoon they had stayed clear of Paris and gone to Ireland and Scotland. Not long afterwards, Dawson had gotten an offer to work with some writers on a movie, and Joey had urged him to accept, even going as far as to quit her job in New York. She was getting restless anyway.

Dawson had freaked but she assured him it was time to move on, anyway, and they moved to California with Mark and started house hunting.

Joey had loved unpacking at the Big Sur and the Hollywood Hills houses, calling items like shampoo and soap, their items, their bed, their TV. She grew incredibly close to Mark as Dawsons days were filled with meetings and negotiations, and she and Mark went up to the beach and played.

One night, out of the blue, Mark called from his bedroomMama!

And Joey went running.

Dawson, shocked, his fork halfway to his mouth, put it down and ran after her.

Mama, he said again, crawling into Joeys lap. Joey wasnt even surprised. She just hugged him and went to get him some apple juice.

****

The sound of splashing and happy gurgling could be heard from the light and airy kitchen as Joey walked through the front hall, removing her coat and placing her leather bag on the hall table.

She laughed when she saw Dawson, his shirt soaked, attempting to give their ten month- old baby girl, Megan, a bath.

She wont keep still. Shes like you in that respect. Dawson sighed, firmly holding the baby in the small water basin.

Hmmm. Joey tickled Megans soft head gently and cooed, Hello babymommys home now.

Megan smiled a wide, toothless yet adoring smile, a smile that was almost identical to her mothers.

How was she? Joey leaned over and kissed her husband softly on the mouth.

A playful little cretin. As always. We played backgammon, and watched Barney, who, might I add, is a scary evil purple dinosaur with a personality to match his gigantic tennis shoesflat, creepy and boring.

You watched Barney? Joey repeated incredulously, taking a carton of orange juice out of the fridge. Jesus, how bored were you? Maybe this whole vacation thing is taking its toll.

I actually like doing nothing and just looking after Megan. At least for a little whileyou know, to release steam, catch up on the good things in life. Dawson grinned, I think Megan and I are bonding really well.

Of course you are. Joey sipped her juice, feeling again the stabs of guilt she got almost everyday when she thought about her job and her beloved baby girl, and her little boy, Mark, who was at a play date.

Dawson lifted Megan up in a fuzzy towel and gently rubbed her head and arms dry. She was, already, a very pretty baby, with wide green eyes fringed by lush lashes, and a dark patch of hair on her little head. She was all Joey, which made Dawson glad, he couldnt have handled another blonde child.

They were back in New York, after a successful two-year stint in California. Dawsons project was going to debut at Sundance in the fall and they were going to go and ski in Park City where it was held. Joey was back in high-form, having been just promoted at the early age of thirty and she worked full-time, so she was happy to have Dawson at home looking after the kids. He was a natural father, sharing his love equally around Mark, Mitchell and Megan. At least in New York the flight to Paris was seven hours, opposed to fourteen from L.A.

Hey, you, dont feel guilty. Dawson wrapped his arms around his wife. He knew when she started to feel like this, her eyes brimmed up and she would stare at Megan. You do a wonderful job. He kissed her mouth gently.

You do a nice one yourself, she murmured.
