| Sonic the Hedgehog 2, normally abbreviated to Sonic 2, was released on the Mega Drive (known as the Genesis in the USA), the Game Gear, and the Master System. Its release date on the Mega Drive was 24th November 1992. The overall object of the game is very similar to the first. Dr. Robotnik is planning to use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to drive his awesome machine of destruction, the Death Egg! If Robotnik succeeds, the whole of Mobius will be doomed! Once again, Robotnik is turning the inhabitants of Mobius into Badniks in an attempt to foil Sonic's rescue attempt. Power rings are still the best form of protection against badniks, although shields can be found throughout the zone which allow Sonic to survive one Badnik attack without losing rings or a life. Collect 50 rings and a special stage can be entered when a save-point (star posts which Sonic passes throughout the zones) is passed. Collect 100 rings and Sonic gets an extra life! Special stages are the means by which Sonic can collect the Chaos Emeralds. In this game, they are 3D race tracks in which Sonic must collect a certain number of rings to proceed to the Chaos Emerald at the end! The major new addition to Sonic 2 is the introduction of Tails, a two-tailed fox. In this game he cannot fly, swim or carry Sonic to inaccesible places, yet he can in the subsequent two games. The other major addition is a seventh Chaos Emerald. If collected along with all the other six, Sonic can become Super Sonic! In the Mega Drive version of the game there are eleven zones, and each zone has two acts. The eleven zones are: Emerald Hill Zone Chemical Plant Zone Aquatic Ruin Zone Casino Night Zone Hill Top Zone Mystic Cave Zone Oil Ocean Zone Metropolis Zone Sky Chase Zone Wing Fortress Zone Death Egg Zone At the end of each zone, Robotnik comes along to try to stop Sonic. These 'bosses' as they're known, are much harder to defeat than your average badnik, and normally require between six and eight spin attack hits to defeat. The Death Egg Zone is again, just one big boss. Sonic 2 was a very successful and much anticipated follow-up to Sonic 1, and it didn't disappoint! |
