USS Mahlon S. Tisdale FFG-27

USS Mahlon S. Tisdale (FFG-27), a flight one Perry Class guided missile frigate, was commissioned on November 27 1982.  Just over thirteen years latter she would be decommissioned - 27 September 1996.

The Perry Class guided missile frigates represented the largest Naval destroyer class to be built since World War II.  Originally conceived as patrol frigates, they were built as guided missiles frigates innovating new designs.  The ship's Combat Systems were built around a  computerized command and control system.

Powered by two computer controlled gas turbine engines, driving a controllable pitch propeller, the ships are  fast and highly maneuverable.

With the integration of computer control in both their weapons and engineering systems the FFG-7 class was able to reduce manning.  Their complement called for only 18 Officers and 180 enlisted.  Later modifications increased manning to well over 220.

The Tisdale was named for Vice Admiral Mahlon S. Tisdale. Born  in 1890, he served in both World Wars.  Vice Admiral Tisdale was awarded his first Navy Cross for service during WWI and earned a second during WWII, along with the Legion of Merit, and Distinguished Service Medal.  The latter three awards were earned in action against the Japanese in the Solomon Islands.

A note from your host:

I reported aboard the Tisdale as an ETC, coming aboard just after her transfer to the Reserves (March 1988), leaving  in November 1990.  During that time we made many cruises up and down the west coast, to ports in Mexico and Canada.  Vancouver BC became our alternate homeport, the Unicorn Club a favorite watering hole for the Chief's Mess.

During that time we also participated in PACEX'89, the largest fleet exercise since World War II - at least until Desert Shield/Storm.

This is a site in progress.  When completed this site will be dedicated to the men who served aboard the" Battle Frigate" Mahlon S. Tisdale.

If you're a former member of her crew, please drop me a line.  I'm looking for pictures and stories of the "Dizzy Tizzie" and her crew.
