Captain’s Ed’s Super Simple Country Soap

Recipe makes about 7 pounds of pure, hard, smooth healthy toiletry soap

Basic Ingredients:

½ container of Red Devil Lye (6 oz.)

2  pints room temp water

4 blocks of lard (4 lbs)

Note:       Bottle of White Vinegar (a safety measure, just in case)

Paper Towels

·  While wearing Playtex rubber gloves and a bottle of white vinegar standing by close at hand, gently pour 6 ounces lye into a Pyrex Glass Container containing 2 pints of fresh water. Add lye to water, not the other way around to minimize splashing. Stir with clean wooden paint stick until dissolved. DO NOT to the breathe fumes!. Solution will get hot! Let sit overnight to cool. Keep away from Children and Pets ! HANDLE WITH CARE!

§   Note: Lye is caustic, vinegar is acidic. Should you somehow splash the lye solution, carefully blot it up with vinegar drenched paper towels. This will neutralize the lye solution.

·   Next day, melt 4 pounds of fat in a stainless steel pot to a clear liquid. Then gradually let fats cool to a warm temperature @ 110 deg F. Stir from time to time to prevent the crystals of fat from reforming.

·   After fat has cooled to 110 deg F, carefully pour the lye solution into the fat in a thin, steady, stream with even stirring.

·  Stir mixture with a wooden spoon for 15 to 20 minutes. Once a creamy honey-like texture is achieved and “tracing” begins, your soap is ready for fragrance and dye additives.

Captain Ed’s added ingredients:

¼  Cup of oatmeal

¼ cup of Aloe Vera Gel

¼  cup of fresh peppermint flakes

½ tsp of good smelling essential oil

·        Stir in equal parts of of oatmeal, Aloe Vera Gel, and of fresh peppermint flakes as first signs of tracing (@1/4 cup each).

·        Add 1/2 teaspoon of your favorite essential oil.

·        Pour into molds. Let sit undisturbed for 24 hrs.

·        Remove from molds after 24 hours (before it completely hardens). Now is the time to cut into usable sizes (if needed)

·        Set out to dry for 1 week before using.
