SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

DEAN POPE CLASS

The Dean Pope Class was named for a young man killed in the Vietnam War in 1968. Dean attended Eulaton UMC as a youth. His parents were A. T. & Thelma Pope members of our church. Dean lived in the Eulaton community and was one of several Wellborn High students who died in Vietnam.

The Dean Pope Class was originally set up for the young married, many of which back then knew Dean or even had gone to school with him. As the "Young Married" class evolved and new people joined, we also have single parents. We are very diverse and have a closely knit class of 11.

Marshall Crow is our teacher and also the Lay Leader of our church. We are presently studying "Angels" a very informative look at them with scripture basis. If you do not attend a class, we would love to have you try ours. We will make you feel right at home. We have coffee each Sunday morning in our class. The first Sunday in each month we serve pastries, juice and coffee.

Come, be spiritually uplifed and receive warm Christian fellowship in our class. We are located upstairs, second door on the right. Come grow with us!!

THE SUSANNA WESLEY CLASS

Originally the Susanna Wesley Class was made up of only women, the men had their own class, The Men's Bible Class. The death of Moses Russell in the 1980's left the men without a teacher. Mr. Delmas Foster came into the women's class and ask if the men could join our class. Mrs. Violet Curry replied to Delmas, "If you can put up with all of us, we can put up with all of you." The men joined the Susanna Wesley Class.

The Susanna Wesley Class has ten members ranging in age from the late fifties into the eighties. Most of the members have been retired for sometime but some members are active in volunteer work such as hospital volunteers and meals on wheels. One member accompanied Bro. Sam and now (June 2001) with Brother Virgil on weekly visitation.

The class has three shut-in members who are into their 90s: Mrs. Elsie Murphree, Mrs. Fannie Williams and Mr. Delmas Foster. They were faithful members as long as they were able to attend.

Teacher's note: Men and women of great faith and example have passed through the Susanna Wesley Class. The present class is no exception. Their attendance, financial support, their all around interest in the church, their love and concern for each other and the church membership is an example for others. Geraldine Brickhouse.

SAM STARR CLASS

The Sam Starr Class, originally class #6, began many years ago as a young adult class. In the old church building, before the fellowship hall and more downstairs classrooms were added in 1957, the class met downstairs in the last room on the right. The only other classrooms in the dark basement that was dug out by hand in 1935 were the children and youth rooms. After the addition we moved into a brand new downstairs room again the last room on the right.

Some of the first teachers were Ed Starr, Gordon Turner and Herbert Bunch.

The class name was changed to the Sam Starr Class around 1947 after Sam was killed in a car wreck. His parents Ed & Vic Starr and their family, daughters Jimmie Sue and Eddie Ruth had been active members in the church for many years. Sam and his wife, Grace were members of the class.

From the very early days until the present the class has always been a very active, giving and caring class. The class has always had between 25 & 40 members. At present we have 27 members. We meet once a month, we either bring a covered dish or go out and eat.

We have several on going projects. We do a sunshine basket once a month for the sick and home bound of the church. We have a family we adopted several years ago that we provide Thanksgiving and Christmas for each year. We also provide gifts at Valentine and Easter for the children and the beginning of the school year we get school supplies for the children.

We provide outfits for the little preemie babies at the hospital that are stillborn, when needed.

When one of our class members has been in the hospital and comes home, we fix two meals for them.

We have random drawings for small prizes but you must be present and on time to win. We never know when there will be one.

We are blessed with lot of talent. We have 4 good Sunday School teachers, each one with their unique way of teaching.

If you are looking for a Sunday School Class where there is a lot of LOVE and lot of fun we invite you to our class. Our class is located upstairs the first room on the right.

JOHNNY CUNNINGHAM CLASS

This class was named for Johnny Cunningham, son of Ruby and John, who passed away while he was studying for the ministry. Since Johnny had been an active and contributing member of the youth group before he went away to seminary, the members voted unanimously to honor his memory. Furthermore, in remembrance of Johnny, donations and gifts from his family that have blessed the Sunday School Class include: a statue of Mary and the Baby Jesus purchased and brought back from Germany, a floor-to-ceiling cross that hangs on the classroom wall, and cash for a personalized plaque for display in the class.

The class is composed of many members that were in the junior high or high school youth group when Gorden and Ruth Mitchell were the directors. Addditionally, there are others who have moved into the community from other areas. The class was formed to accomodate the college and careers segment of the church. As these members have increased their families with their own children, our church has been further blessed with Christian love and growth.

As teacher of the class, Gorden Mitchell addresses the curriculum of everyday situations as they apply to Christian living based on Biblical principles. Along with class discussions, the class plans and enjoys different activities throughout the year to celebrate the members' friendship and love for each other. Gorden and the members happily extend an open invitation to any young adults interested in fellowship and Christian development to visit the Johnny Cunningham Class and give it a try.

FELLOWSHIP CLASS

The class was meeting in the basement in 1949 on the east side with Mr. Moses Russell as the teacher with men and women meeting together. The older men had a separate class and they decided they wanted Mr. Russell for their teacher and Mrs. Cleo Forsythe became our teacher. When the church was renovated we moved in a room on the north side of the basement. Mrs. Siddie Boozer was the teacher at this time. The men decided they wanted a separate class, so they left the class. The women decided to change the name of the class to The Berean Class. When the men returned to the class the name of the class was changed back to the Fellowship Class. After Mrs. Boozer left the class Mrs. Eula Lloyd was elected the teacher. From memory some of the other teachers were Mrs. Theo Williams, Mr. Tyrus Vernon, Mr. Marvin Haynes and Mr. Carl Gardner.

Some memories of the class: Drama Haynes was class secretary, Bernice Wade opened the class each Sunday and always had a poem or a bright saying she read and then turned the class over to the teacher. The class went on lots of trips on the "Little Yellow School Bus" in the 1980's, went to Lookout Mountain, TN., Grand Ole Opry and stayed at a motel, coming back on Sunday and had the Sunday School lesson in one of the rooms before leaving for home. Visited Callaway Gardens, toured the Little White House in Georgia where FDR died, went to Stone Mountain and many other outings. As Emma Reynolds said, "I won't ever forget those good times and our fellowship together."

The Sunday School Class now is located between the nursery and pastor's study downstairs. Mary Carlisle is the teacher and anyone seeking a Sunday School Class is welcomed in this class.

History information furnished by Emma Reynolds, Eula Lloyd and Gwen Daugherty.

SUNDAY SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT

On September 7, 2003, we celebrated Promotion Sunday. The following advanced into the next class. Lauren Odell was promoted from Nursery II to Elementary I. Evan Wesson moved from Elementary II to Elementary III. Although Megan Marcotte has relocated to California, she also was promoted from our Senior High Class.

Mrs. Clara Hadder presented Evan Wesson with a Bible from the Sunday School department that honored Mrs. Jewel Dutton, a long time teacher of our children before he death. Mrs. Mary Waldrep graciously provided the Bible for the occasion.

Congratulations to these special people. Their former teachers will miss them, but their new teachers are excited about welcoming them into their class.
