Science Fantasy
Anne McCaffrey
Dragonriders of Pern
An interesting series by Anne McCaffrey about the discovery of a planet, its settlement and how the settlers handle a threat from thread by adapting dragons and humans to combat it in the air. Also has one book on the Dolphins of Pern which is about the interaction of the people and enhanced dolphins of Pern.
The Ships that Sang.
Another Anne McCaffrey series although she is usually collaborating with others in this one. A kind of series that I treat as a series about some very unusual starships and their unusual commanders. Will it ever be possible to do what they do here, hardwire the commander to the ship, and would they ever want to?   Talk about virtual reality.
The Rowan Series.
Another Anne McCaffrey series about people who use their mental powers to transport people and starships and to communicate over very long distances. 4 books in this series.
The Crystal Singers.
Another Anne McCaffrey series about people who use their voices to carve crystal out of mountains. Talk about high C.
Powers That Be.
Another Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough write about a sentient planet and the battle to have it recognized as such. 3 books in series.
Freedom Series.
Another Anne McCaffrey series of 2 books about a human captured by aliens and sent to a habitable but dangerous planet with recalcitrant slaves from a variety of races, including the human; all must learn to cooperate with one another to survive.   Then they must decide whether to stay and colonize the planet or return to earth and help in the battle against the aliens.
Mercedes Lackey
Mage Wars.
A trilogy by Mercedes Lackey set in Valdemar in the years of wild magic, about a thousand years before Valdemar is established, with magic a wild and uncontrolled force. A story about the Black Gryphon and then to his offspring.
The Last Herald Mage.
A trilogy by Mercedes Lackey about the last of the old Herald Mages in Valdemar and the extent to which they took the seriousness of their job.
Heralds of Valdemar.
A trilogy by Mercedes Lackey about the Heralds of Valdamar and their Companions, horse looking entities, who chose who was to be a new Herald.
Mage Winds.
A trilogy by Mercedes Lackey about Elspeth Herald, heir to the throne, needing to take up the challenge of magic and counter a new magic danger to the land of Valdemar.
Mage Storms.
A trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and the sequel to the Mage Winds Trilogy. This series is about storm mages, people controlling the weather and their battles.
Other Stories.
By The Sword - a story about a girl and her magic sword.   Sword of Ice : And Other Tales of Valdemar - some background stories that fill in some information on the other Valedamar stories.   Owlflight - a story about a young reluctant wizard and his meeting with the Hawk people.
