    Please Stand By... growing pains!

Now that the merger of Yahoo and GeoCities is official on paper, it's time for the more rigorous task of merging the two systems and databases. Since this change-over began, we have experienced outages of various services, and it's been a hair pulling experience for all involved. If you think it's difficult from your side, imagine what the programmers and networkers are going through at the other end. In all it hasn't really been too bad, considering the magnitude of the task. Through all of this our pages were accessable to viewers... our updates would have to squeak through some other time.

As the dust settles and things have begun coming back online, the system is overall pretty stable. Re-registration has begun and there are updates finally occurring to pages again. It's still advisable to keep an eye on the system status for next little while, but it appears the worst is over.

Now, here comes the part we have been waiting for. The "what happens next"! Is it going to be an improvement to our services and can we look forward to more?

Have you got an idea for a news article, or have you posted some information regarding business, web page building, or other related topic you would like covered in our newsletter?

We would love to hear from you and include your ideas in our newsletter. To submit information or article to this newsletter please use the Contact Editor form.

We are particularly interested in tutorials, graphic resources, web publishing tips, JavaScript Apps and other tools that would be of interest to our readership.

    New Life For Awards

Giving New Life To Awards Program

There has been a resurgence of interest in the former Awards Program. The Awards Program is being revitalized and has the go ahead to carry on. This program was obviously affected by the changeover of ownership and had been put in cryogenics.

So the word is we are going to reinstate the "Outta Site Award", which means you can nominate a page (including your own) from Eureka. If it meets guidelines for our hood you could be recognised for your page with an award and be covered in this newsletter and posted on a recipients page.

Since this program is just being re-launched it is not finalized. The Awards Committee Members are scrambling to get things set up again, this includes everything from a submission site to a voting booth... no small task! You can find more information and updates on the awards project in Special Projects and follow it's progress while being reinstated. As new information is released it will be posted to this newsletter and the Special Projects pages.

Under the former awards program we could select a weekly winner for recognition in Eureka, each month a single winner was selected from the weekly winners and submitted to GeoCities for consideration in their own awards program. This program will benefit those who have worked hard at developing their page by helping to promote traffic to their site - the award is just a bonus. Winners of the monthly GeoCities awards are eligible for even greater rewards by being entered into the yearly awards. What better way to promote your site than to receive an award of recognition by your peers.

    Contest Announcement

Results of the Fathers Day Scavenger Hunt!

For the Community Leaders who put this project together, it meant many hours of work in outlining and planning the event, creation of graphics and a support page, press releases for the various GeoCities newsletter, etc. They worked exceptionally long and hard at preparing this contest, with the intention of providing GeoCities homesteaders with entertainment, and the prospect of winning an award for solving a puzzle.

Sadly, this contest did not receive a single response. The result yielding a lack of response must have been taken quite hard by our committee members who worked so hard in presenting this. Hopefully this will not discourage them from creating future contests and events for Eureka.

    The Scavenger Hunt Committee.

These committee members are committed to bringing you quality programs, contests, and events. They strive for the highest quality possible, and have to work closely despite sometimes being a half a world apart. Contests are selected and created for the quality of entertainment, made simple to solve (most only require determination to complete the puzzle), and often expose viewers to the pages contained in Eureka. They are used to highlight events during a month or season.

Star Wars! Are You A Fan?

Lucas has done it again... he's extended his famous saga by offering the first episode to a whole new generation. Theatres filled with parents and children and toy store shelves quickly sold out of figures and other collectibles. The movie was typical Lucas story telling and fans enjoyed the latest installment - no matter how critical they were of characters and effects. The marketing strategy was pure genious!

Now you can test your knowledge with the latest installment by The Gadget Factory and add your own Star Wars Trivia Game to your homepage. It's fun, it's easy, and all you need to do is cut & paste the code provided or use the easy GeoBuilder tool to add this to your page.

    Comical Caption
    Contest
Each month the Eureka Newsletter team will be bringing you the Comic Caption Contest. This is where we post an image and you create the caption.

This contest is ongoing and is a permanent part of the newsletter. The contest started in May, but we have kept the original image for the June issue so we may gather more replies.

Need to lighten up your day? Check out the Comic Caption Contest and laugh at the replies and images we post. This is purely for fun, and is worth a few giggles. Business shouldn't be all work and no play... and we intend to add a bit of laughter to lighten up your day!

    Re-Registration Frustration!

Now that the merger of systems has taken place, Yahoo is asking that we register one more time so your information is correctly entered into their database. Now if you've already gone through this process you know that your original GeoCities name now has a .geo following it until re-registered. The problem is in conflicts with existing names in Yahoo (they take precedence) and you could end up with a name change, even if you wanted to keep your original membername.

To avoid possible name changes, start by setting up a Yahoo! mail account using your current membername, if it's rejected it means the name is reserved on Yahoo's database. Then try an alternative name you would be satisfied with. Once you have your Yahoo mail account set up your registration.

Registration is easy, just enter GeoCities and log-in as guest. You will see that there is a notice above the regular sign-in area asking that you go to that area if you were a member before June 25th - this is the re-registration area. Enter your former GeoCities membername, then simply follow the steps, let it know your Yahoo! mail account membername, and merge the two! If you had to take a new membername, your page will automatically rename itself.

Of the noted problems with re-registration is registering our children's pages. While we are not asked for additional confirmation of our ages, or identity, a credit card is required to register a child's page. Plenty has been said about these practices in the Forum and Chat areas, and it's not acceptable to most of our homesteaders. Since there is going to be some time before Yahoo! picks out the bugs, this is a bug that is bugging us and will until it is resolved. Many of us feel this is an unusual request (most dislike giving out such personal information - and many refuse to use their credit cards online) and feel it's an unacceptable practice. Perhaps the future of EnchantedForest is at risk, it will be deforested of children with most parents not accepting these terms to sign-up a juvenile member of the family. If we lose our children's pages we could possibly see a loss of their parents pages, also.
