Bauernfest 99
10th German Settler Party

During ten days, from June 25 to July 4, people from Petrópolis will celebrate their German roots with lots of beer, dancing and traditional music. They will celebrate the first German settlers who arrived in the city, in 1845, with the Bauernfest - German Settler Party. In the people's vocabulary beer, bauern (settler), bierwagem (truck delivering beer in the streets) and sauerkraut are all the words you are likely to hear. The historians estimate that at least 40% of the 280,000 Petrópolis inhabitants (about 110,000 people) have direct descent from the first families which settled the city.
For the tenth time the bucolic Imperial City is covered by the colors of the German flag colors - yellow, black and red, spread everywhere throughout Petrópolis. Folk dance groups warm the cold nights of the winter. People from Petrópolis share all the German happiness with the tourists to celebrate their traditions. The City Hall, which organizes the event with Petrotur, the official Petrópolis tourism office, estimates that 300 thousand people are expected to attend the party. During the ten day party, by Petrotur's expectations, 30 thousand liters of beer will be consumed.
It takes only 45 minutes for the tourists to feel they have arrived in Germany - from Rio to Petrópolis. The Crystal Palace, one of the most important and most visited Petrópolis monuments, right in the heart of the city, will be the main Bauernfest's settings.

Five porches placed at the streets Alfredo Pachá, Presidente Kennedy, Padre Siqueira and at Praça da Confluência, main accesses to the area around the Palace, welcome monuments to the public. 26 stands reminding you of German architecture will sell food and souvenirs. The whole event will be carefully prepared; from the stands to indicating signs plates, as well as a stage where bands and groups will perform and where balls will take place. The event's programming, with free admission every day, forecasts theater performing about the settling, called Bauernszene, bands and folks groups parades in the main streets of the city.
The Bauernfest is an initiative of the Petrópolis City Hall, but the whole community is involved in the event. One who looks for hotels or lodging in the city, for example, will find receptionists wearing typical German clothes and wreath. The House of Petrópolis, an institute of culture, for example, has its own special programming during the Bauernfest, which comprises art exhibitions by Moni Reski and Marcelo Lago.
