The Difference Between Drought and Famine:
Drought is an unavoidable phenomenon of nature. Famine, during a time of global food surpluses and cheap grain prices, is the result of governmental mismanagement. That a drought has been allowed to deteriorate into near-famine conditions is a depressing example of a breakdown at the top levels of the government. Regardless of the response from official Western donors, the government is expected to do whatever it takes to mobilize the Ethiopian people inside and outside the country to provide the necessary relief to our compatriots.
Fundraising Challenge:
Now is the time when our country desperately needs our support. Those of us living outside Ethiopia should take the lead in helping our countrymen. Remember, in Ethiopia people are contributing between 5 and 15 percent of their income. Surely we can do more.
