News and Commentary on Ethiopia/Eritrea Conflict:
August 7 to August 14

Week ending Friday, August 14, 1998:

Tuesday, August 11, 1998:
  • OAU Introductory Note Presented to the Ethiopian and Eritrean Delegations, (Burkina Faso, August 1, 1998)

  • Comment: The document shows that the OAU simply noted Eritrea's positions, and did not adopt them as its own. This contradicts Eritrea's previous claims that the OAU agreed that it was pursuing a "completely new initiative." Also, it is clear that Ethiopia's position was strongly validated, when the OAU stated:

It is, nevertheless, of the view that what happened in Badme between 6 and 12 May constitutes a fundamental element of the crisis. Consequently, the challenge to be taken up is to find solution to that particular problem

Eritrea had entered the OAU meeting by stating this position was "unacceptable" to it. Therefore, the OAU meeting was a diplomatic defeat for the intransigent Eritrean stand. It is time for Eritrea to give up the macho "I won't withdraw even if the sun doesn't rise" posture and start working for peace.

Monday, August 10, 1998:
  • Rude Behaviour (Discussion)

  • Gaddhafi Watch: Eritrea asked to answer for violating UN Air Embargo on Libya. (sanctions are because of Libyan involvement in terrorist bombing of PAN AM Flight 103 that blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland)

"In a related development, the [UN sanctions] committee authorised its chairman, Ambassador Danilo Turk of Slovenia, to send letters to a number of countries asking for details of their involvement in apparent violations of the air embargo against Libya."

"That was in response to a letter from the United States listing seven such cases since April this year. (Reuters)

The seven incidents included flights to and from Libya by the president of Eritrea between July 24 and 28. Comment: Eritrea's desperate need for cash from Libya outweighs their need to maintain good relations with the United States.

  • Deported Eritreans, Ethiopians trade accusations (Reuters)

  • Eritrea, Ethiopia speak: "expulsions, mistreatment" (BBC)
