News and Commentary on Ethiopia/Eritrea Conflict:
July 17 to July 23

Wednesday, July 22, 1998:
  • COFFEE MARKET TRENDS US Emb. Market Research Report (July 7, 1998):- "Although not stated, the current border dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea has stopped the smuggling of coffee to Eritrea and as a result, more coffee is coming to the central market."

Also read very interesting article about new mineral water factory in Bure, Gojjam (from March 6, 1998) and summary of Ethiopian Airlines annual revenue (July 17, 1998)

  • Rapid Response Task Force? Anyone interested in forming a rapid response task force to counter the Eritrean disinformation campaign, send e-mail to dagmawi@oocities.com. FYI here is an e-mail I sent to the San Francisco Chronicle

  • Mr. John Rude (in the service of the EPLF) This is just an alert to readers that Mr. John Rude, a former peace corps volunteer in Eritrea and a Dehai member, is mounting a campaign to spread EPLF propaganda in newspapers across the US.

So far, two unsuspecting newspapers have accomodated his writings - LA Times and San Francisco Chronicle. Perhaps a warning campaign is in order to let newspaper editors know that he is a partisan advocate for Eritrea. His warmongering writing at Dehai is even more extreme than that of most Eritreans. Ethiopians should urge these newspapers to provide an opportunity for us to set the record straight. The latest John Rude accusations in the San Francisco Chronicle are particularly outrageous because he knows better... I had exchanged e-mail with him on July 7 and alerted him concerning the demonstrably false information posted at Dehai.

  • Ethiopia and Djibouti set up free trade zone (AFP) Comment: Good move, next should be an export processing zone (EPZ) to include Somaliland also.

Tuesday, July 21, 1998:
  • Ethiopia re-emphasizes that Eritrea must accept peace plan: ``The issue first and foremost is for Eritrea to declare acceptance of the peace plan of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) endorsed by the U.N. as a whole,'' government spokeswoman Selome Taddesse told Reuters. ``What President Isayas is doing is picking bits and pieces from the resolution and ignoring the key elements -- such as the withdrawal of its troops from Ethiopian territory first.''

  • There is a rumor that the US Congress house international committee is to discuss a resolution on the Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict today. Some relevant addresses (for info and sending mail):

Monday, July 20, 1998:

Sunday, July 19, 1998:
  • INTERVIEW-Eritrea challenges Ethiopia on arbitration (Reuters, Nairobi)

"Eritrea's refusal to accept a clause in a peace plan by the United States and Rwanda, endorsed by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and, tacitly, by the U.N. Security Council, has scuppered the best chance yet for a settlement, according to diplomats."

"Western diplomats in the Ethiopian capital say Eritrea suffered a heavy defeat south of Assab in June."

  • Somalia slowly recovering despite little government (Report from port town of Berbera in Somaliland)

Saturday, July 18, 1998:
  • Eritrean News Agency Manufactures Falsehoods ERINA falsely claims Presidents Kabila and Museveni made proposals that are exactly identical to the Eritrean proposal... In fact all African presidents have stated that they are working within the OAU framework. The OAU has endorsed the US-Rwanda peace plan.

  • Open Letter to the UN Human Rights Commissioner

  • Ethiopia-Eritrea Soccer Match Postponed The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced that the match between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which was planned for August 2 this year, had been put off indefinitely.

    Quote for Today
(Economist Intelligence Unit, 2nd Quarter, 1998)
The economic fallout from the introduction of the new Eritrean currency is still being assessed. One outcome that threatens to sour crossborder relations is the fact that Eritrean businesses have amassed a short-term debt to Ethiopian banks of almost Birr 1 Billion ($150m). Finance officials in the Ethiopian government are threatening to clamp down on crossborder trade links as a result. Further confusion is expected in May when the Nakfa is likely to be floated on the open market... Its value is likely to drift downwards.

  • Unemployed Ethiopians demonstrate at Eritrea port (Reuters)

  • No Survivors in Ukrainian Cargo Plane Crash (AFP) - plane crashed as it attempted to land at Asmara airport at around 7 pm... All ten crew members killed... Eritrea still has not released any information on this crash
