'She's heading in the wrong direction'

NEW ORLEANS, Louisianna -- The CCFFL is unhappy with how Anna Kournikova was interviewed Saturday by GUMBO-TV after the Sam Adams University game, saying Sunday that questions were harsh and insensitive.

Anna Kournikova
Anna Kournikova was publicly criticized by some of the game's greats for her behavior and lack of any knowledge of football.

GUMBO responded that the questions about Kournikova's football knowledge were "not unreasonable.''

Kournikova was visibly irritated during the interview, which followed the Vomiting Drunks loss to divisional rival Million Dollar university.

After failing to keep the players focused during the game, Kournikova was irritated when interviewer Michael Hunt suggested she should consider letting the assistant coaches have more control.

"I just don't think you should phrase the question that way,'' she snapped. She stood up, and asked that the taped segment start over. GUMBO later aired the entire session.

Dan Williams, Lori Tisdale and Steph George criticized Kournikova, as did Louisianna newspapers.

CCFFL spokesman Jon Hanf said talks were held with GUMBO about the interview.

"We've had discussions with GUMBO and said perhaps they could have been a little more sensitive to the coach,'' Hanf told The Associated Press. "It's in the league's best interest to keep Anna happy, after all she is responsible for 90% of our TV revenue. And hell, if they scare her out of the league, it would ruin the fantasies of every owner in this league. I mean, how else do we have a chance of scoring with her?"

"We talked with Anna afterward. There was, I think, a legitimacy to her irritation to the way the questions were posed ... they were probably being phrased a little more bit harshly than they needed to be.

"It's unfortunate that after she requested they start again, that they showed the entire thing from the start to finish.''

GUMBO said Sunday that it stood by its decision to broadcast the whole interview.

"We met with the CCFFL and there was a frank exchange of views,'' GUMBO spokesman Ira B. Gay said. "We understand each other's concerns. The questions asked in the interview were not unreasonable.''

Gay said he was unsure whether GUMBO had previously broadcast in full a taped interview that someone had asked to be restarted.

Kournikova will only be required to sit down for another GUMBO interview if she and the Drunks make it to a bowl game

Two-time CCFFL champion Williams, who is doing GUMBO commentary here, said Kournikova needs to assess where she is going in the sport.

"Her nerves are shot, she doesn't have the confidence of her players, and she doesn't know a damn thing about football, and if she is telling you otherwise then she's kidding herself,'' Williams said. "You can see that by watching her on the sidelines."

If only there really were two of her.

"At the same time let's not forget that the Drunks have had a moderate amount of success this year. But honestly this team is a house of cards that could collapse at any moment and Anna is the reason for that."

Tisdale, the 2001 Good Times Bowl Champion, agrees.

"She has lost her confidence and I don't think she is facing her problems,'' Tisdale said. "She is absolutely in denial. Seriously now, have you seen a Sam Adams practice lately? Roughly two-thirds of the time is spent by Eli Manning begging Anna to give him a couple of snaps from under her center."

Tisdale said the interview showed the real Kournikova.

"A coach can be stretched and you can say things in an interview you regret. I know, I've been there -- but nothing like that,'' Tisdale said. "It was horrible, I can't wait for her to disappear from these league websites.''

Fellow CCFFL AD Steph George agreed.

"You can't react like that. It's pathetic. She has had more cameras thrust in her face than I've had hot dinners."

Kournikova had at least one supporter -- Scott Gautreaux.

Is there really trouble at Sam Adams... or is this just a shameless excuse to post Anna pictures?

"I didn't see the interview, but I did see her change in the locker room this morning,'' Gautreaux said Sunday morning.

"Anna is definitely going through a difficult period. I think she'll get through it. She's a got a very

nice ass. Each one of us has a crisis ... in (our) career. It's a tough one she's going through. It's tough making the transition from profesional tennis player to college football coach."

"You know, even though with all of her struggles this year, the bottom line is that we've been winning. This is just one loss and it's a hard one to take. It's just a matter of time before her confidence grows and she becomes more accustomed to the role.''

Kournikova's interview spat and panty pictures made front, middle and backpage headlines in Louisianna's newspapers Tuesday.

"Is it game over for Anna?'' asked the Daily Mail in a two-page spread that said "TV tantrum tarnishes gold girl image.''

The Daily Telegraph, under the headline "Kournikova starting to look like last year's model,'' said her coaching ability "is nothing more then posing and pouting, with a a couple of skirt raises to distract the opposition.''
