Changing
the Focus from Emergency Preparedness to Everyday
Preparedness Charles
Darwin was the scientist who introduced the theory of
natural selections, more commonly recognized as “survival
of the fittest.” We believe that even natural
selections has evolved; no longer is survival based on who
is the most fit but who is the most prepared. Even
though history has repeatedly given people tangible reason
to be personally prepared (i.e. floods, wars, hurricanes,
earthquakes, strikes, recessions, unemployment, etc.), it is
interesting that in recent years what has caused people to
take action in becoming prepared was the mystery that lay
behind the millennial clock (Y2K - an occurrence that could
only happen once in a thousand years) and most
recently, the terrorist attacks on America (something that
could happen anywhere at anytime). The misfortune is that both of these recent events caused panic around the world; people scrambled to get prepared, and “emergency preparedness” companies preyed on people who were panicked. This is exactly what Darwin had observed in the animal kingdom when he developed his theory of natural selections. Regardless
of what may or may not occur at a given time, individuals
and families should evaluate their strengths and weaknesses
in terms of personal preparedness, develop traits of
self-reliance, and then practice self-reliance on a daily
basis. It is
impossible to survive the inevitable calamities of life if
self-reliance is saved for an “emergency.” The
practice of everyday preparedness yields peace and
tranquility as opposed to “emergency preparedness” that
is spawned by fear. |
