Molly Smart
v
ocals, flute, recorder, lyrics

Recently accepted into the U.C. Berkeley doctorial program in ethnomusicology, the much sought after Ms. Smart embodies her name. Born and raised in the wilds of Wyoming, she is one can-do musician Subtile and stylish, she will get under your skin.
Jay Schwartz
drums, lyrics, percussion

Trap drumer, newspaper columnist, and lyricist are some of Mr. Schwartz’s multiple personalities. While hidden serenely behind a dazzling arsenal of drums, his weapon of choice is the pen as he has masterminded the lyrical impetus of most of the bands’ tunes.
Amanda Crocker
vocals, lyrics, percussion

Teacher by day, jazz singer by night, our resident chanteuse is the product of New York’s Broadway.  Personable and witty, her charm is infectious. Her life has been filled with art and music since her earliest days.
Paul McElwee
violin, mandolin

The consummate violin playing of Mr. McElwee just makes you want to put on a your bow tie, but this native of the southern wilderness grew up jamming on front porches and eatin’ grits. Don’t even get him started on the mandolin, he’s out of control. Paul brings new textures, dynamics, and elegance to our ever-growing ensemble. Paul is a long time member of the Oakland Civic Orchestra and comes with a musical pedigree longer than your arm.
Mark Schirmer
vocals, lyrics, cello, saz, bass

Principal cellist with the Oakland Civic Orchestra, Mr. Schirmer (no relation to the publishing house, but possibly distantly related to Beethoven) brings a lifetime of musical inculcation to the King. He has been a wedding musician, and performed in Syracuse University School of Architecture String Quartet, and the Detmolder Jugendorchester. Mark is an alumnus of Arizona's Arcosanti, and is educated in architecture. He spends his spare moments promoting sustainable building practices in the Bay Area and Turkey where recently decided to step beyond his German upbringing by trying to grasp Turkish maqam.
Jeremy Steinmeier trumpet, trombone, tuba, bass

The fact that Mr. Steinmeier serves as the King’s true one-man brass section is just not enough. That funky bass grove is just born within some people. What drives him to do this? Is it the inspiration of Da Vinci or just the curse of attention deficit disorder?  Regardless, you will be the musical beneficiary.

Evidence of the King is the product of two classical musicians tired of playing weddings.  Emancipated by a drummer over four years ago, we have our beginnings in a dank lair in the shadow of San Francisco’s King Diner, playing free improvisation to the open mic nights of San Francisco.

The vision of the group has been to be ever expanding and encompass new musical ideas through the empowerment of traditional instruments.  Today the group is six members strong from diverse influences and training, such as jazz, blues, world beat, free improvisation and Balinese gamalon.  We have over nineteen instruments within easy grasp, including tuba, bass, vocals, violin, cello, and recorder, which are heard throughout any given performance.

This variety creates a rich style unique to our ensemble. Planted squarely on this base of ever shifting in genres, the sound is unified with joy and intensity, while remaining readily accessible to a variety of audiences.  To hear us is to know us, nothing else is satisfactory
