Alone

It was relatively simple….get in get out, report back to the Emperor, how hard could it be...I"m a freaking ninja.  But it seemed different tonight.  Almost as if I wasn't here alone, which was absurd, out here on a lonely country road?   I came alone, and I wouldn't be at my objective for another hour, it was at least 3 miles away, and I felt like walking.
I knew it was nothing, and that I've done this dozens of times, and never once was caught, but the fear remained in the back of my head.   Maybe if I turned around I could validate my fear.  Tell myself for certain that I had nothing to worry about.
So I turned around, and that's how it began…
Quickly I was surrounded on all sides by creatures hidden in the shadows.  I've been doing this for a long time, but I've never seen something like this; there were hundreds of them, tiny little devil-like creatures, about 2 feet tall all cloaked in the shadows of nearby trees.  They looked, and even smelled evil.  These were no friends of mine.
Of course, I was ready.  I stood still, to see what they would do, and let them make the first move, and hopefully the first mistake as well.  A group from behind me charged…the first mistake.  This was almost too good to be true.  I back flipped over all of them, and came back down just in time to see all the little guys knock over their friends on the other side, impailing each other with their sharp crusty claws.
I smiled.
Not for long though.
The groups to both my left and right advanced on me.  They didn't run, for they had seen what would happen if I pulled that move on them again.  So I was faced with a choice: sword or gun?  How about both?
I ran directly towards them, my sword in front of me, like I was about to swing at them.  Then I stopped dead in my tracks, as did the monsters.  They seemed confused.
Again, I smiled.
I mowed them all down with an AK47 that I had strapped to my back.  It felt good to see these little guys basically explode when I hit 'em.  I was very relaxed.
Seeing that my back was turned, the guys behind me started to run…unfortunately, it was at me.  No problem.
I swing around just in time, and hit the first bastard with the butt of my rifle.  I shot at the rest of them, hitting very few, and ran out of ammo before I ran out of foes.  So time for plan B.
I smiled…one more time.
I whipped out my sword, and started to swing wildly in front of myself.  I couldn't see much anything except, a tidal wave of blood coming off my sword.  Every once in a while I limb would hit me in the face, and that was my only indication that I was still hitting anything.
After about 10 minutes I realized that I had killed everything, and currently was hacking away at some underbrush that had grown by the side of the road.  I felt kind of dumb, and even dumber when I tried to make it look like I was cutting the grass…nobody was there.
So I went home, with a failed mission.  You could see the blood on my jacket from a mile away.  But I didn't care.  I had fun.
