The Unknown Terror
Voodoo Island
I'd been searching for this movie for more than a year.Hadn't seen it since the early 70's.Was just going to give in and buy a bootleg when lo and behold it aired on TCM.Taped it and settled in to give it a watch.
Critics tore this one up.Karloff was accused of "phoning in" his performance.Have to wonder what
movie they were watching. The movie is low budget and the script admittedly is very weak but Boris is the saving grace for the film.He makes it worth watching.
What little plot there is involves a hotel magnate hiring Mr Knight(Karloff).Knight is a renowned hoax buster and he is to ferret out the secrets of an island that the hotel magnate wishes to build on.An earlier scouting expedition led to several deaths and one man coming back in a mental trance.Hey we even get to see Adam West years before Batman in a small role.
Our little gang has a lesbian character in it which seemed kind of daring for 1957. Of course she is eaten by a "man eating" plant. The intrepid group runs into voodoo and nasty natives. Are they all doomed or will somebody survive to tell the tale?
Again this film was shot on the cheap (probably under $100000 with probably 25% of that going to Boris). There is a lot of talk and a little action.Just watch it for Boris, still capable at the age of 70 of carrying a film on his shoulders.

I was able to acquire a copy of this little flick recently.I remembered it from my youth but  still had some trepidation due to all of the snooty reviews of the flick.Well ol' evilskip is here to tell you that it isn't nearly as bad as it has been touted.
An expedition is lost somewhere in South America near the cave of death.Well a second expedition is mounted to find the first. Gina Matthews' brother was among the expedition and she is after some answers. Her husband finances the trip and agrees to let Gina's crippled ex boyfriend Peter Morgan go along.
In a village nearby the Caves Of Death the trio meet Dr Ramsey.Dr Ramsey is a mad scientist experimenting with a strange type of fungus. Before long we've got some nasty looking zombies and an unstoppable killer fungus. The fungus feeds off of human flesh and also has as symbiotic relationship with the host.Granted, the fungus looks like it came from a dish washer with an overactive thyroid but what could you do with $12 for special effects?
The trio winds up trapped in a cave with tons (or is that gallons) of the fungus cascading down threatening to turn them into mindless fungus zombies. They may have to sacrifice their lives to save the world from the fungus among us!
Again this isn't a classic by any means. But in the right frame of mind it is a pleasant way to pass 70 or so minutes and relive a few pleasant childhood memories.Or what the heck, fill up your dishwasher with some Ivory and create your own fungus among us!
