BLOOD OF DRACULA/CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY
     WITH DEAD THINGS/THE MASK (1961)
Blood Of Dracula
Well to start with Dracula doesn't have a thing to do with this movie(Teenage Dracula would have been a cool title). The producer,Herman Cohen was 27 when he did this one.He also did Teenage Frankenstein and I Was A Teenage Werewolf.
Six weeks after her mother dies a girl's father marries a blonde bimbo.Stepmom has the kid sent off to a school for girls. She doesn't really fit in.As usual in these 1950's programmers there is a teacher that hypnotizes her for some ludicrous theory of supernatural power for the benefit of mankind.Well the girl turns into a vampire. She has pointy ears, a widow's peak, pasty face, pointy teeth and a pointier sweater.(Hmm, I think I went out with her in college).Actually the vampiric makeup is quite effective and no doubt caused a few chills in a drive in in 1957.The killings begin and as usual the police are baffled.
At one point there is an impromptu pajama party crashed by some boys. One of them sings a horrible song called Puppy Love. Somebody rip his throat out now! Please! This has to be one of the worst rock and roll numbers done in a 50's horror film.(John Ashley comes close in "How To Make A Monster").
There is a lesbian undertone in the relationship between the science teacher and one of her other students. The student certainly worships the ground her teacher walks on.Pretty risque for 1957 or I'm just being dirty minded.
At the very least this is a nice example of trashy drive in cinema fun.
Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things
If this isn't the best title for a horror movie you better show me the winner. This is a pretty neat collaboration between Bob Clark & Alan Ormsby.
It concerns a troupe of actors going to an island graveyard led by their sadistic director. Not only are his 1972 clothes an eyesore you want him to meet a violent death because he is an anal cavity. He browbeats all of his actors before he pulls a vicious prank on them. This causes one of the
characters to babble incessantly about wetting his pants.
The director uses a book of spells in an attempt to raise the dead as his slaves. We're not really sure if it is a put on or he really means to do so.Well it doesn't work. So to satisfy his sick whims they dig up a corpse that he names "Orvy".
The troupe takes the corpse back to a ramshackle house for fun and games.Orvy is the center of attention. They have a mock wedding ceremony uniting the director and the rotting corpse. Then the director takes Orvy up into the bedroom and lies on the bed with him. Just talking of course but
you get the feeling that the man is really twisted.
The actors aren't aware that the spell did actually work. It just took a while. There are some pretty chilling moments as you watch the zombies burst out of their graves. And yes they're very hungry.
The zombies surround the house a la Night Of The Living Dead. So who will survive and who won't?
In the early 70's it was double billed at the drive-in circuit with Night Of The Living Dead. The movie is a lot of fun.The actors do very well in their roles. The comedy for the first half of the movie wears a little thin. But the movie picks up when the dead arise.
The Mask 1961  3-D
Okay this movie almost didn't make the cut.For one thing it is a bit slow. But it does have its moments.
A very disturbed young man strangles a woman in a wooded area.He then meets his psychiatrist and tells him of an ancient Aztec ritual mask that forces him to commit evil deeds. The doc thinks he's, well, freaking crazy. So the man has the Mask(which he stole from the museum he works for) shipped to his doctor. He promptly blows his brains out afterwards.
The doctor gets the mask and can't resist the temptation to "PUT THE MASK ON".At this point the audience puts on their 3-D glasses as well.
We're treated to some really bizarre hallucinations on what may be the River Of Death.Skeletons, strangely masked people,  human sacrifice, our suicide victim and fireballs leap right at you.
The doctor quickly falls under the obsessive spell of the mask.He longs to take a human life. His girlfriend and his assistant
are his prime targets. Will he give in to the temptation of The Mask?
The 3-D effects are worth the time spent. As for the rest of the movie it could have used some tightening up.
