| This is a film that I frankly had to sit back and reflect on after viewing.Wasn't sure if it was a crafty horror film that worked on quite a few subconscious levels or was it just fun cinematic trash?Could this really be an allegory about Americans raping the lands (& wimmen) of foreign countries?Nahh!Thankfully I wised up and decided it was good clean trash!. The film revolves around a scientist Paul Henderson(Kent Taylor), his slutty wife Carla(Beverly Hills) and a Peace Corps worker Jim Farrell(John Ashley) landing on Blood Island.Farrell is there to help the natives live a better life.The scientist is there to study the effects (if any) of radioactive fallout on the flora & fauna of the island.The wife is there to hump any man in sight.Farrell falls for Alma, the granddaughter of the tribal chief. Our trio meet a rich American named Powers who lives on the island.He has an ugly servant named Goro and a bunch of dwarves as staff.He is very strange.On the way back from his house the doc finds a huge mutated land crab and trees that seem to be alive with branches that attack humans! Well it appears the islanders have reverted back to the old ways.They hold a lottery every so often and the native virgins must enter.The two that lose are taken to an area overlooked by a stone idol that looks a lot like the head of Charlie Brown missing a few teefus.There they are tied to stakes, stripped naked (yeehah) and left for the Evil One (no relation).The Evil One is a big horny honking monster.The monster (who looks like the Michelin Tire Man's rednecked brother) rapes them and then tears their limbs and heads off when he is done.Guess it beats lying to them about calling them next week. The professor is attacked and bitten by a mutant...butterfly with fangs.Oooh dat's scarey!So it seems that the radiation affects things at night.Transformations occur and later the afflicted revert back to normal.One of the trees grabs a native boy (which is quite a sight let me tell you) and the villagers attack and kill the evil tree. Things get worse when Farrell's love interest is scehduled for sacrifice.She is forced to scream in terror as the honking monster viciously tears apart the girl tied next to her.Farrell barely saves her and they all flee to Power's house. Well when Carla gets the hots she follows Powers out into the jungle.She stumbles over one of those killer trees and meets up with the horny honker.He promptly tears off her clothes and goes for it.Ashley and his girl flee to the village but they find a gruesome sight.One of the trees is waving Mrs Henderson's legs and head around in its branches.The monster follows the couple to the village for a climactic fiery battle. This is drive in trash but it is fun trash.Killer trees, naked jungle wenches, a horny monster and some cheesy special effects all add to some mindless fun.The dvd is loaded with cool extras like 6 trailers and a 50 minute commentary by Sam Sherman.The commentary is extremely interesting as it really doesn't cover what you are seeing onscreen.Sherman talks about the marketing of brides and about Hemisphere Films. And to quote the monster:"Hoooonk!" |
