| Les Tremayne .... Dr. Jorgenson John Harmon .... Sturges Two fishermen are found beheaded off of the coast of Piedras Blancas. The town doctor and the constable are at a loss for an explanation.Of course the idiot shopkeeper proclaims it is the monster of legend.The light house keeper, Sturges tells him to shut up.Sturges either has a secret or his rhoids are inflamed perpetually. Jeanne Carmen (a trick shot golfer in reality) is Sturges' daughter. She's in love with Fred a young biochemist.(Fred will have the misfortune of appearing in The Giant Gila Monster and singing some terrible tunes there.Poor Fred.Maybe he'll get lucky and the monster will eat him instead). While the two fishermen are being buried a young boy discovers the shopkeeper's headless body in his store.A scale from an unknown fish is found on the scene.Then a young girl is found in the same gruesome condition. The doc and the cop return to the scene of the shopkeeper's murder.They are confronted by a 7 foot scaly monster carrying somebody's head around for laughs.The monster is an uglier cousin to the Creature From The Black Lagoon. A posse is rounded up and the monster slaughters a few more. Sturges finally admits that he found the monster 12 years ago.He had been feeding it scraps to keep it appeased.When the shopkeeper didn't give Sturges the usual scraps the monster decided to look elsewhere for groceries. The monster decides he wants a little more than food when he spots Elizabeth.In time honored tradition he carries her away.Then we have the famous "toss a lantern from the top of the lighthouse to 200 yards down the coast to hit the monster in the head" scene.The monster gets angry either at being hit or the absurdity of the scene.He drops the babe and heads back to the lighthouse for a final showdown with Sturges and Fred. While no classic this is a fun little movie.Rather gruesome for the time with all of the decapitations..The monster is nasty looking and has a bad attitude.No wimpy misunderstood beast here.He's hungry and you are lunch. And to top it off the town gets it's name from seagull $#%t!! |
