Testament Of Dr Mabuse (Terror Of The Mad Doctor)1962
In 1962 Artur Brauner tapped Werner Klingler to
remake or retell Fritz Lang's 1933 Testament Of
Dr Mabuse.Gert Frobe returns to play Inspector Lohmann and Wolfgang Priess is Dr Mabuse.
Not only do we have one of the best crime thrillers of the decade but a film that goes deeper than that.It is a film about the horrors of losing one's soul. ***SPOILERS!****
Germany is rocked by a series of expertly planned robberies.A truck
full of government gold is robbed. The Diamond Exchange is hit by a gang of
swift cunning criminals.Inspector Lohmman(Frobe) is sure that only one
man can be behind these crimes. But Dr Mabuse is locked away in an
insane asylum.
Lohmann goes to the asylum and talks to Professor Pohland.Pohland
says that all Mabuse does is write notes for days on end.Lohmann meets
with Mabuse who seemingly doesn't recognize his arch enemy.Or does he?
Lohmann tells Pohland that Mabuse may be responsible for the crime wave,
a notion scoffed at.Anything is possible with Dr Mabuse Lohmann states.
When a train car full of government printing paper is hijacked, Lohmann
can't shake the feeling that Mabuse is somehow escaping the asylum. On a
return visit to the asylum Lohmann is attacked by another patient. We
know he was sent by Mabuse, but how?Pohland is skeptical of Lohmann's
theories.
When Pohland attempts to treat Mabuse via hypnotism he is in for a rude
surprise. In a very chilling scene Mabuse admits to planning the crimes.
Mabuse tells Pohland that he himself has been Mabuse's tool.During these
treatments Mabuse has been projecting his will onto Pohland via
telepathy.Pohland has several murders on his conscience according
to Mabuse.
Mabuse asks about his "testament" which Pohland tells him is safe.
Mabuse informs Pohland that they will kill Lohmann.Slowly and painfully
Lohmann will lose his mind before he dies.Pohland seemingly rebels against
Mabuse. But it is too late however...
A foiled bank robbery leads Lohmann back to the asylum.Pohland informs
him that Mabuse died earlier.Pohland has removed Mabuse's brain. He
then has Lohmann forcibly strapped into a chair for electro shock therapy
treatment.Mabuse has possessed Pohland's soul and revenge is sweet for
him as he zaps Lohmann again and again.

An attempt by Thunder Pictures to market Testament Of Dr Mabuse as a horror movie.Double billed with The Invisible Horror(Invisible Dr Mabuse).
This film not only is a wonderful crime thriller but it firmly moves into the horror genre this time.Mabuse has become far more than just a criminal genius.
There is absolute horror on Pohland's face as he is told by Mabuse that HE is responsible for the crime wave.It is the horror of losing one's soul to an outside force that cannot be stopped. How frightening to lose one's own identity to another!
To have no control over your own actions,to be forced to commit unspeakable atrocities against your will is truly horrific.
While it was touched on in Return Of Dr Mabuse the myth of Mabuse as a supernatural being becomes fact. Not only does he control others by the sheer force of his will alone, but can do so even after death.Truly Mabuse has become a demon from Hell.
The next film in the series takes the possession theme one step further. From controlling just one person against their will we move to hundreds if not thousands.
Next Dr Mabuse Vs Scotland Yard.....
When all seems lost and Lohmann begins to descend into madness, help arrives from an unexpected source.Pohland flees with the Testament of Mabuse. He meets a grisly end(?) via the soul of Mabuse.
At last the soul of Mabuse is free to roam at will.Truly more than ever, ANYONE can be Dr Mabuse!
