THEY CALL HER ONE EYE |
NOTE: Since this film is out on dvd I thought I'd dust off this old review of mine and post it here. This film is definitely NOT for all ages. 1/2005 NOTE:THIS FILM HAS BEEN RELEASED UNDER THE TITLE "THRILLER:A CRUEL PICTURE" BY SYNAPSE AND IS AVAILABLE FROM ONLINE RETAILERS EVRYWHERE. They Call Her One Eye" aka Thriller is a brutal uncompromising film.Love it or hate it, you won't forget it. A young mute girl,Frigga, is abducted and forcibly turned into a heroin addict by a sleazy pimp.He then forces her into sexual slavery. When she claws the face of her first "client" the pimp cuts her eye out in graphic detail. Her clients range from a sadistic brute to a strange lesbian. She is forced to serve them over and over again. When learning of her parents death, Frigga uses her ability to move about on a very limited basis to learn martial arts, shooting & driving.Once she is proficient in these skills the hunt is on.She tracks down her "clients" with a shotgun. Her pimp flees and Frigga goes on a violent rampage through the country killing everybody in her way.Innocents, police, assassins all fall to her lethal skills. She has become as brutal as her enslavers. I saw the uncut Swedish language print. While understanding some of the dialogue would have been helpful you can follow along easily enough. There is a lot of symbolism in this film. After all it is a Swedish film.Blowing leaves, a constant wind all are symbolic possibly of how our lives get blown out of control by outside forces. This film doesn't pull any punches. There are hardcore sex scenes that caught me off guard. Then again, she is forced into prostitution and the star, Christina Lindberg was a porn actress. The eye gouging scene was extremely graphic and realistic. The violence is in slow motion and it comes across like a grisly, bloody ballet. The cut American version is dubbed and played very briefly in the Drive In circuit in the mid 70's as Hooker's Revenge. Is this a great film?Well we see the most sadistic forms of evil in this film.It is gritty and leaves you stunned. The revenge violence isn't as disturbing as how Frigga is just reduced to little more than a degraded plaything for perverts.I also have to wonder though that if she eventually had the freedom to move around and learn what she did, why didn't she just leave? Was it because of the addiction?Did she stay to be debased more and justify her revenge? If you have the nerve to sit through this it may be worth your while. But keep the kids away and get ready to be shocked, angry and repulsed. This definitely is not for everyone. |
