Who Is Dr Mabuse? More Edgar Wallace Krimis |
Just who the $#@% IS Dr Mabuse and why is he getting several pages on the website? Mabuse was the creation of novelist Norbert Jacques back in the early 1920's.He was further immortalized by being brought to the screen by Fritz Lang and Thea Von Harbou. The first epic was Dr Mabuse The Gambler Parts 1 & 2.Lang brought Mabuse back to the screen again in 1933 with Testament Of Dr Mabuse. In the 1960's German producer Artur Brauner brought Mabuse back to the big screen with Fritz Lang directing The 1000 Eyes Of Dr Mabuse.Five direct sequels were filmed and released from 1961 to1964.They were Return Of Dr Mabuse, The Invisible Dr Mabuse, Testament Of Dr Mabuse, Dr Mabuse Vs Scotland Yard and Death Ray Of Dr Mabuse. They were directed by the likes of Harald Reinl, Werner Klinger and others. In america only the first four made it to the big screen while the other two made it to very late night television. The first four were very poorly marketed as horror movies under various titles.Eventually all of the films made it to late night television doomed to be seen by a few at 3 am. A few years ago I was able to pick up the entire run on vhs tape. What a wonderful introduction to the world of Dr Mabuse! As with any series there are some trouble spots as it progressed. But all in all five are worth watching. 1000 Eyes and Testament Of Dr Mabuse were released on dvd by Allday Entertainment in 2000.David Kalat has also written a book just released by McFarland titled The Strange Case Of Dr Mabuse. Due to the nature of the Mabuse films there are spoilers so please be aware of that. With other films I try not to give too much away but to discuss these films with the depth they deserve this is unavoidable. Clicking on the 1000 Eyes Of Dr Mabuse link below will take you into the world of Mabuse.Be warned though that in the world of Mabuse, nothing is what it seems and appearances ARE deceiving! |
