This is an odd bit of history that my boyfriend and I found in Worcester, MA. It is on the UMASS Medical Center campus but highly fenced off. You can drive up to it, and depending on what the security guard thinks, you can sometimes walk around it (at a safe distance due to the high fences with barbed wire at the top). This is a former state mental institution, which was closed down and boarded up for various reasons. I was told that this place has only been closed for a few years, but the building was obviously in use for many years. There are also people who claim to have been inside and seen things like shackles on the walls and mysterious dungeons where labotamies were performed. While these may seem like horrible exaggerations, one must remember that some of these items are probably left over from the early 1900s. It is doubtful that they were used in recent years, but in the late 1800s and early 1900s, psychology was not what it is today. In fact, being in an asylum was often worse than being in prison. |
