What is the purpose of the Club?
Purpose of the Shinai Club of Ewing Township

I started this club for my son and his friends when I noticed that he and his friends, like most children, loved to grab sticks and pretend to sword fight. Now most of us as children have engaged in this activity and let’s face it whacking each other with sticks can get pretty dangerous. Kids can get out of control quickly and tempers can flare, this leads to accidents and injury. Well I sat down with my son and asked him if he would like to learn about swordplay. When he found out just what swordplay was his eyes lit up! I have training in martial arts and have been practicing sword techniques for years so I looked into “Kendo” as a means for my son to learn. After learning of the high cost of “Kendo” and the strict disipline it required I knew I would have to find an alternative. I searched the internet and found the website of the “Huntington Beach Shinai Club” http://www.shinai.org/
I knew that I found my answer! I copied their rules and adapted them to suit my needs. That is how the “Shinai Club of Ewing Township” was born! I like to think of our club as a poor man’s “Kendo”! The benefits of our club are obvious:
1. The kids are off the street and out of trouble.
2. They are learning something.
3. They are interacting with each other.
4. They are getting a physical work out.
5. They are having fun.

That’s not to say our club is limited to just kids.
Adults are welcome to join to!!!
Remember our club stresses technique not speed and power, so the matches are usually pretty even no matter what the age is!
