Website Retires With Exeter's exit from 2002 Cuppers to eventual winners Wadham, and their narrow
defeat by St John's in the final of the beer-leg tournament, this site has finally
reached the end of the line. After all, I did leave college some time ago,
and none of the first team of my day are going to be playing next season. Best
of luck to Exeter in the forthcoming years. This page will continue to exist as a record of Exeter's most successful period in college darts, and the guestbook will keep working long after you've forgotten about it. [One-off update #1 : 2002-3 league table : 1sts relegated at last, 2nds promoted.] [One-off update #2 : It's 2004 and we've got a new website! And we're back in Div 1! Graham |
Exeter Darts - recent record After years of irrelevance on the university scene, Exeter came from nowhere to win the university beer-leg and cuppers in 1998. The following year saw the team promoted as division 2 champions. Captain Jonny Sultoon was runner-up in singles cuppers that same year. The 1999-2000 season was the best of all, with Exeter finishing as division 1 champions and beer-leg winners. Sadly, the treble eluded us when we were cuppers runners-up to St Anne's in the last match of the season. Cuppers of 2000 also saw the first match for Exeter II, who narrowly failed to knock out St Anne's in the very first round. 2000-2001 saw almost the entire team leave, including all four university players, but we were still division 1 runners-up by just one point to Queen's, who also narrowly beat us in the beer-leg final. Meanwhile, Exeter II missed promotion in their first full year by losing a play-off on a beer leg. A completely new generation of first-team players has produced some excellent darts without quite reaching those levels in 2001-2002, though the second team did achieve promotion this time round. A cuppers quarter-final, third in the league, and runners-up (again) in the beer leg was as good as it got. Results and tables are available. |
HALL OF FAME Exeter Darts 1998-2000 Damage / Cox / Balo / Jo / Sparkes / Sultoon / Devaney / Fads |
Classic Matches In the couple of years during which this website has been running, there have been a few genuinely fantastic matches. These four stand out in particular : |
Queen's (a), HT 2000-01 Exeter had to win in one of the most difficult away venues to stop the old enemy winning the title. Apparently quite a good performance ensued. St Peter's (a), HT 2000-01 With Exeter's season stuttering, Stevenson chose this moment to throw the best leg ever seen in university darts and inspire a crushing victory. Beer-Leg 2001 A superb run included some inspired darts, only to fall at the final hurdle. Fads supplies a great value report. Queen's (h), MT 2001-02 All the ingredients of a classic : a fifth consecutive win over your most hated rivals, a cacophony of banter, and Ed Savory throwing the winning dart. |

Exeter Pool While on the subject of Exeter's general pre-eminence in the world of Oxford bar sports, Ed then proceeded to give me details of our success in pool, a sport in which the Damage's memory extends even further into the mists of time. The team's achievements deserve a mention on these pages. |

Is is the arrival of Ed Savory in these teams which has inspired them to such great
results? Only you can decide ... [2002-3 table]
There have also been various individual achievements in the world of pool. Rob Sparkes (2002), Dave Flowerdew (2001) and Jo Davis (1998) have all won singles cuppers, with Sparkes also runner-up in 2001 and Flowerdew runner-up in 1998. Sparkes and Flowerdew won doubles three times out of four attempts, and two-man team cuppers on all four attempts. Jo Davis also achieved the unusual and possibly unprecedented feat of being seeded in pool and darts singles cuppers (and in the varsity team for both sports) in the same year (2000). |
It may (or may not) interest you to know that the five titles Queen's have won is
the most managed by any college, disappointingly. Oriel have four, apparently
won in the early 90's as well as in '96. Lincoln have four, all won in the 70s.
And Exeter have just the one. Those desperate to turn back the hands of time for some reason might look at the old darts websites of Corpus, Oriel, St John's (awesomely comprehensive) or the whole University. Other sites (seemingly still current) are listed in the margin on the left. |
A Brief History of University Darts Having trawled the memory of the venerable Mr E Savory (left), and with a little research of my own, I am able to present the winners of (almost) every major competition in college darts since 1994. For the last 5 years, Exeter's position is in brackets after the winner's name (RU=runner-up, QF=1/4 final). |
