Hunting Action Pack 2003 |
We are fast approaching June and can expect the Report Stage of the Hunting Bill to be scheduled any time now. The Countryside Alliance and the Council of Hunting Associations have put together a pack designed to 'inform' and 'educate' the general public about the perceived values of hunting with dogs. I have given this document a cursory glance and already have picked up on some issues that are just so laughable because of the air of desparation they have about them. They are advising local hunts to attend local fairs during the summer months when the foxes and deer have a rest from persecution. They are also advising hunts to 'invite' anyone to come along to a hunt one day and see for themselves what goes on. Hmmmm.......why do I get a feeling that this would be a well orchestrated day pre-arranged by the hunts themselves whereas it should be you turning up when you wish. I have one piece of advice for anyone contemplating going along. Ask the senior member of the hunt staff the following two questions:- 1. Can I watch the terriermen/women 'dig out' the fox and watch it being quickly and humanely despatched by the humane killer.eg., firearm.? 2. Can I be present when the lead hound/s finally catch the exhausted and terrified fox as they give it a 'quick nip to the back of the neck' to humanely euthanise it? The likely and probable answer will be a very resounding 'NO!!'. However, it will be put in a way that attempts to convince you that there is really nothing to see and it's probably best to leave the terriermen and hounds do their work in peace and without distraction.
