PHOTO 29 -- Propellant grains for AST series of static tests
PHOTO 29Two propellant grains for the "B-200" motor, used for static (ground) tests of the rocket motor. One of the goals of the AST series of static tests was to determine the optimum oxidizer/fuel ratio for the propellant. The upper grain in the photo had a oxidizer/fuel ratio of 60/40, and the lower grain, a ratio of 75/25. Note the colour difference--the greater the oxidizer percentage, the darker the colour.
This is a result of the longer processing time at an elevated temperature (the grain is molten and cast to shape).
The propellant is very hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) and as such is sealed in a plastic bag and stored in a freezer.
