• Protect your privacy - you don't want to be spammed, do you? Some sites submit to be reviewed by professional firms like Thawte or Verisign. A reviewed site will have a special symbol, usually on the bottom of the main page.
• Order only on secure server - look for the "lock" symbol on the browser's status bar to make sure the connection is safe.
• Get to know who you are buying from - if you don't know the company, look for information on the internet, especially newsgroups
• Don't tell anyone your password - find a "difficult" password, that is one that others won't be able to guess (no birth dates, for instance).
• Choose the safest way of payment - debit cards, for instance, have liability limits other than most credit cards, which means that your losses in case of fraud may be smaller. It is important to use a secure browser and pay only to businesses you know and trust. Laws like the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) and Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA) provide protections against lost or stolen credit or debit cards and procedures in case of errors on credit and bank statements.
